I was SHOCKED that Alkan had anything more to say after that incredible Scherzo!! And of course, in the most bewildering move possible, he does a recap of the suite before going into the Barcarolle. Ahead of his time by every metric imaginable.
And the performances are outstanding: bringing the music to life while remaining faithful to the score. I've never come across Ms McCallum before, but I shall now be seeking her out. Thanks for posting.
That second movement… not only is this just so foreign to his time, but it feels foreign to humanity. Alkan was truly one in a billion to have had these ideas hundreds of years ago.
