Ipad or Mac depends on use cases. I have both, mainly using my iPad m4 13 1TB for preparing training materials, research, brainstorming and planning. I use MP 14 M2 only if I open several Excel spreadsheets for my company’s financial calculations. Opening and working with several Excel spreadsheets is cumbersome with iPad. I use my iPad M2 Pro 13" to watch RUclips and Netflix. That is literally it. Every time I need to do something more involved than that, I use my Macbook Air or if I am sitting at my desk, my Mac Mini M2 Pro. For work an iPad is a definite no, I need access to IDE, Git and a bunch of tools that are either not available or just toy versions of the real thing. I do like the screen on it though.

I’m a programmer, so I use an iPad Air beside my Mac. However, my wife relies only on her 6.5” phone for all her computing needs. Even when I brought a family laptop, she never used it. She been browses the web on her phone. This is why I think an average person can have iPad as his main computer. Not only the iPad Pro, even the entry level can be enough according to user’s needs.

My MacBook's battery died right as I got to the airport, so I had to use my iPad Pro as a computer for about two weeks. Mind you, I do a ton of computer work because I have a couple of webstores. I was blown away by how the iPad is actually a fully-fledged computer. It could EASILY run macOS, but obviously, Apple wants to keep a contrast between MacBooks and iPads. I did everything I would normally do on my MacBook on my iPad and was not let down even once.
I finally understand why some people buy iPads instead of a laptop or MacBook. It pretty much does all the basic things.

I know this won’t apply to everyone but I’m a visually impaired VoiceOver user and trying to actually get work done on the iPad was sadly a nightmare. Keyboard commands that could be the same between mac and iPad like text navigation and text selection were sometimes different, and though this may be a microsoft issue, apps like word or PowerPoint that had tables were a. Nightmare to navigate. Just trying to copy some text off of a table cell took so long that I cracked after a half an hour trying to figure it out on a plane where I was so bored and wanted to invest the time and I just used my touch gestures. Agree completely with this assessment. As long as you aren’t coding, iPad generally should cover what you need from basic tasks to photo/video editing. I’ve been using an iPad Pro (3rd Gen - so pre apple silicon) for years as my main personal computing device since 2019 moving from macbook airs / macbook pros before that and I don’t think I need to switch back. It’s the best travel companion for long flights and runs Lightroom just fine when I’m editing photos on the go. My wife uses it to operate her Cricut and to do things on Canva. I think once this iPad craps out, I’d probably get another iPad Pro over a cheaper macbook air.

I have been on a job site in construction using only the M4 iPad Pro this weekend and have used it for requesting permits through the browser and apps, sending and receiving emails, making and receiving calls, sending pictures, creating invoices, etc.. Granted, I use the Logitech combo touch and a Pencil, but I can do 99% of my workflow on this thing while also having the convenience of being to able to message people and stream my music all from this one thing. I'll just say it, my M1 iPad Pro is well over powerered. It's way more than enough. I think even if I had the A12Z chip on this iPad, it would be more than efficient for the work I do, mainly drawing, art, word doc, youtube, writing papers, team meetings/video calls, video editing. I've even done Logic on it and I've thrown a lot at it and it doesn't budge.

For the few people truly on the fence about what apple products to buy as a computer or device:
I brought a refurbished iPad Pro 11 in for $460 (2 years ago) and I just bought a M2 MacBook Air for $860 (Prime Day $200 discount)
Including some accessories like the Apple Pencil and paper like screen protectors, I’ve spent an extra $200+. That comes up to $1,520
For reference the new M4 11 in ipad with keyboard and pencil comes out to over $1,300 without other accessories.
In my opinion there is no reason to buy an all is one device when you can just buy both and get the better of both worlds. It also is pretty much CHEAPER if not the same price.

I have extensively employed the iPad Pro since its inception, and currently, I am utilizing the iPad Pro M2, the latest model in my possession. The possibility of it replacing my laptop is quite dim, primarily due to the constraints imposed by the iOS operating system. Lately, I have acquired a Surface Pro featuring an OLED display, which has proven to be remarkably efficient for both professional endeavors and recreational pursuits. My predominant use involves work-related tasks, viewing films, listening to music, managing photos, and engaging in artistic pursuits. I have decided against acquiring another iPad in the future, as it essentially mirrors the functionality of a larger iPhone, despite its impressive capabilities.

I’m considering an M4 pro. I tried the iPad for one week 😅 I installed all native apps and I used webapps versions of the apps I had on my windows laptop. You can’t code or script on a iPad, so for scripting I use a remote app to access my laptop, I can kinda live with is solution.. But there is one thing I can’t overcome and is very annoying. As far as I know is that when you want to download files or photos from an app (google photos, canva, wetransfer etc) you NEED to keep the particular app active till the download is finished, otherwise the download will stop. Probably iPadOs freezes the app when you switch to another app, this end up to download files again. So in my opinion you can’t really multitask with the iPad. It is more like multi-windowing instead of multitasking. I used an iPad Pro 2nd gen for this experiment.

But that doesn’t make it a non-laptop replacement. Too often, a laptop/not-a-laptop or computer/not-a-computer is defined by its usage. It doesn’t matter if an iPad can’t do what you need it to do. Your work is not a defacto standard. Someone who edits docs or checks emails or any other “work” can use an iPad as an actual computer. That kind of work is just as valid as what you do so don’t judge others who aren’t software engineers and then try to convince others that your occupation is what defines a computer versus an iPad.

Very good video. I think that iPad could be the main computer for almost 90% of people. The real thing that is missing in iPadOS (to make it really a valuable alternative for more and people) is the multiuser functionality especially for iPad Pro and, for me, iPadAir too. Obviously, with this feature iPad should be less “personal” than now but if you spend the same amount of money (or more) than buying a PC/Laptop you should have this functionality as it could be a main family computer.

Thinking about using iPad instead of Mac since I don’t do anything crazy. I love the portable nature of it along with pencil. Easy to carry out with me to a library or coffee shop and just chill.

I’m iPad user with over than 10 years of experience and I can confidently say - iPad is NOT a PC replacement! The main problem is iPad os = iOS. You feel inconvenience even if you need to set up some meeting in outlook, cause it’s mobile version without plugins you need. The same with every other app.

I’ve been using my iPad Pro (M2 now M4) + Magic Keyboard + Cellular as my full time laptop for now 3.5 years.
When combined with Windows 365 / Remote Desktop + Azure Windows, and the full M365 suite on the iPad, there is no comparison to an actual MacBook - this can beat it in 80-90% of standard & power user corp office categories.
    Can it do better? Absolutely
Is it a MacBook replacement without cloud computing ? Mostly but def not more than 75-80% for expert office users.
Would I switch to a windows or MacBook laptop? Never again.

I don't recommend the iPad Pro M4 at that price for main computer.
You can get a cheaper iPad and run Remote Desktop or Cloud PC or run a server at home and VPN and a few other such solutions.
    This way you have:
    1. Tablet excellence eg the responsiveness you mentioned and versatility properties.
    2. Productivity features of full desktop operating system and software versatility via remote desktop
The 2nd option does not need such expensive or powerful hardware as the M4. You can run all this off 10th Gen iPad so long as internet connection is fast enough at both ends.
Alternatively go for a 2nd hand 9th gen ipad at $150 + relatively modest desktop or laptop at $500 or more or less depending on needs and then either use both when needed or else run remote desktop into the full OS machine. Still save a fortune that way and do as much than over-spend on M4.
The iPad Pro M4 is easily the best hardware Apple is selling on the market right now: It's incredible but only if you have the budget or can afford to pay top dollar without blinking. If Budget is tight then go as above and it works out as good.
At some point Apple will have to take the top tier hardware and upgrade the OS to a new multi-OS system that is combo of iOS/MacOS in all honesty given the hardware is so far ahead of the software right now in the top models.

hey would you consider personally reviewing one of those portable monitors using it with the ipad pro in a mobile on the go setup? I'm personally interested in that 17 inch asus rog one for context. Here's hoping also that apple will increase the ipad pro screen sizes with the next models since there have been rumors on that some time ago. I'd love a screen size that can display the equivalent of two 10.5 or 11 inch apps in 50/50 split view (for context the 13 inch displays two 9.7 inch side by side)

I just want to say that if your app's data is still in RAM, then you didn't really restart it. If the errors are caused by malformed or corrupted data for whatever reason, it'll persist between app launches. It's a double-edged sword.

I do agree either way you on most points. I am a nearly iPad only user. Around 98% of my monthly privat/personal computer time, can be comfortably done on an iPad. But unfortanly, the iPad is still not able to replace a computer. And no, I don’t mean the workflow. A few days ago, I a friend gave me a few used card that works with my older camera model. I had to format the cards so I hat to use my old Mac book air 2015. I heard that it should be possible with ios18, but it is not today. Also the router I got from my internet provider, does Require a browser that does not run on WebKit for administration tasks. While I do not want Mac OS on my iPad, I like the simplicity of iPadOS, I do wish for less restriction. Like, why can I only have one audio device? Is having an App/Background sound and a mic input so ridiculous to ask? Why are background task so constricted? If I start to copy a bigger file, I still what it to copy, while using my iPad.
I’m still on my iPad Pro 11 from 2018. I was looking forward to the new m4 iPad, but as apple announced that most ai features are not coming to the eu anytime soon, I don’t feel obligated to upgrade. In case my old iPad breaks, I will find a refurbished m1 iPad Pro.

The iPad Pro is a 100% laptop replacement for 95% of other “professionals” that need the convenience (or desire) for one. And I think it’s safe to say that laptops, desktops, tablets, phones, etc, are computers by design and function. I just wish people would stop determining what’s what based on very specific use cases.
