I was thinking the same thing, and I believe the cube is necessary for 1, since the angles make that one segment just barely readable as a straight line. If you stood these segments up straight, there would be no good vertical segment for 1

The 4 would be an F and the 1 would be an upside down L if it was shaped like a traditional 7 segment display
