Over the next six to seven years after Big was released, Hanks would become the number 1 box office draw in films like Philadelphia, Forrest Gump and Apollo 13. Amazing.
Tom Hanks was nearly in Super Mario Brothers but he was considered Box Office poison...basically saved his career. imagine a timeline where tom hanks did Super Mario Brothers and was basically told to go play in traffic instead of being hired for those movies?
The young actor who played the young Josh was filmed in all of the scenes so Tom Hanks could see how he reacted with in each scene. Then Tom Hanks used those reactions in his portrayal of bigger Josh.
"Splash" with Tom Hanks and John Candy was one of the first movies directed by Ron Howard. It was also Tom Hanks' first major role in a motion picture. It is a classic. Don't know how many times I have seen it but it's a lot.
Just started watching Ashleighs channel and binging them hard. At first I was shocked at how many classics she hadn’t seen. But I really enjoy sharing the experience of her viewing them for the first time… a real joy xx
At 13, I might not have recovered from sleeping with a fantastic beauty like Elizabeth Perkins. I'm not sure I could have focused on work after that. I would be dying for our next lovemaking session.
Tom Hanks first film is "Splash", with John Candy. His breakout role was in a tv series called "Bosom Buddies" where he and a friend dress in drag to reside in hotel meant for women.
Before that, he starred in a cheesy TV movie called "Mazes and Monsters". They couldn't call it "Dungeons & Dragons" or they could have been sued. And before that, there was some horror/slasher movie, but he was in a supporting role.
To be specific, "Splash" would be his first starring theatrical role. "Mazes and Monsters" was a TV movie, which he had top billing. "He Knows You're Alone" was his first film, but only as a supporting character. His other TV credit was where made three appearances on "Family Ties" as Elyse's brother.

This is the movie that showed Tom Hank's acting skills. Before this, he was in straight comedies (splash, bachelor party, etc) after thus he had several serious rolls and won Oscar's.
"I just know there's a young Tom Hanks" Oh, the irony of that statement. 80's Hanks is gold. The man can do no wrong, The Money Pit is hilarious as well

Actually, it's neither. It's one-wall paddleball. Both racquetball and squash are played in an indoor court, but with somewhat different rules. Also, both racquetball and squash use stringed racquets, while paddleball uses a big paddle with no strings (similar to a ping pong paddle).
Racquet ball is played in a room where the ball can be played off any of the walls, the game in the movie is paddle ball. Was huge here in NYC in the 70s and 80s.
The actor that played the younger “Josh” was on set all the time. They did scenes without cameras rolling to see how he would act the scene out. Tom Hanks would observe the boy’s idiosyncrasies and then copied them when cameras were rolling .
@@themoviedealers It really shouldn't shatter anything. That is what GREAT actors do. They observe someone who is like the type of person they're trying to portray. It helps them make a more realistic performance. If you had to play an old person, wouldn't it be good to watch them? Check out how they walk, talk and move so you can be realistic? If you don't do something like that, your acting will "miss a few notes", and not look right. Subtle things can make, or break a performance. As to my "old people" example: You can actually tell from FOOTPRINTS if the person was an old, or a young man! A young guy has a spring in his step. Therefore, the balls of his feet makes a deeper impression, compaired to his heels. An old man conserves his energy. The bottom of HIS prints are more even from front to back, 'cuz he doesn't push off like a young dude. Not that long ago, they made a movie with Robert De Niro, where they "de-aged" him digitally. I remember complaints that he LOOKED young, but moved like an old man. It just didn't look "right".
@@americanfreedomlogistics9984 I got the impression it was more like they couldn't decide on an accent, so when it came to the kids parts, Tom Hanks emulated it... Made him sound more like a kid-as-an-adult.
This was one my grandmothers (who I called mom). Can’t count the times we say watching it together. Thank you for the bittersweet trip down memory lane.
This is one of those movies, if put in the hands of a lesser actor, would have been schlocky and overdone. But Tom Hanks just nails it as a 13yr-old in an adult's body.
For more young Tom Hanks, watch SPLASH, but other good 80s movies that'd be on the same VHS in a typical collection would be "Mannequin" and/or "Inner Space."
I'll sum it up for you: He only THOUGHT he wanted to be big, but once he became big, he realized that the very things he was running away from were the very things he loved the most.
Ashleigh had me rolling.. The baby corn comment, "throw them away because I don't know how to eat them", just highlighting the scene happening. "Beluga, like the whale?" That is when I passed away.
Tom Hanks was so great at maintaining the child-like innocence and enthusiasm throughout the movie. This film also put Penny Marshall on the map as a director! So glad you enjoyed this one!!
As others have noted this film started showing some Tom Hanks acting chops as if he really was a child inhabiting an adult's body. It will also be fun when Ashleigh starts getting into all the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan collaborations.
"I have a floppy disk to save the information that is on my CD-ROM." The geek in me hated that. But I also got a laugh out of it. Now I don't know what to feel. XD So, now we need to get Ashleigh to watch The Money Pit.

@@tempsitch5632 the first thing I thought of when Ashleigh said "4 years of playing games" was that in the 80's and earlier you would have to know a little programming at least. Huh, I was just thinking about this, and how it was weird Ashleigh didn't mention it, because that's how I remember the ending. With them in class and there is a new girl., Susan. I even remember my dad and I talking about the ending.

HI Beans! Awesome reaction as always, thank you. I bet if Blake had been around for your prom, you would have had a great seat in the Limo. That story breaks my heart because of all the stuff I saw some people go through in high school... I wish no one had to have stories like that, but I guess that is not realistic to wish for. I am sure it wasn't a horrible evening, and in the picture you look gorgeous. It is funny that NOW, anyone in your class would jump through fire just to be lucky enough to escort you anywhere... The limo would be JUST for YOU. I wish I had the ability to make it happen, but at this moment, I want to send a limo to pick you and Blake up, just to go to Arby's and then maybe bowling then a milkshake.... just for the hell of it. Nothing better than doing a fancy trip to some basic ass stuff... confuses the hell out of everyone, but super fun.
Absolutely LOVED this movie as a kid. Still do. Pretty imaginative. The part where he made his opinion about what toys kids want to play with totally resonated with me back in the day. Also, the text based adventures he was playing. I used to play those!!!
Your limo story is so relatable that I laughed and felt bad for you at the same time. Another great movie that Tom Hanks is in: Stephen King's The Green Mile.
The amusement park that is featured in this movie is called "Playland" and is located in Rye New York. I have been there as a young lad many times. In fact a company that I worked for in the 1970's would rent the entire park out for a day every summer. We would bring our children and EVERYTHING was free. The rides, the food and the arcades. All free.
Looking at it from our older point of view the "would you go back to being a kid?" is very different. What I mean is we are looking at it from the "Would *I* go through all that again?". Many of us could have different answers, and many could vary from day to day. However to me, the answer for Josh is an easier "Yes". Because he hasn't lived through that part of his life yet. It's basically a different question, because of the perspective. We're asking if we'd live it AGAIN, while he needs to live that part of his life, like the rest of us did. The time for a successful career will come later.

When I rewatched this movie recently, it reminded me why 80s movies are so good! Get an idea, however wacky, focus on making it entertaining and don't let too much real-world logic get in the way. There's just something so wonderful, charming, naive and joyful about movies like Big... and just think about if it were to be made today. There would be a serious side plot regarding his family's trauma at Josh's kidnapping, and there's no way that he could be allowed to sleep with an older woman!! And Tom Hanks, man... what an actor! Can't wait to see your reaction to Forrest Gump! 😁
It's one of the elements that I like and find in manga/anime today: take a wacky idea, actually play it wacky, and somehow still inject wholesome, deep emotions and meaning.
There really needs to be a Highlander franchise primer for anyone that hasn't seen any of the films. Just one or two of the worst scenes from all the sequels or a rundown of how stupid the plot is of each...

Isn't that the same song that Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley) sings in the Naked Gun 2 1/2 shower scene, then the killer promptly joins in with singing?
I was waiting for you to get to, "Okay, but I get to be on top." The "chopsticks" keyboard dance is very fun, but I feel like that line is the turning point for them.
The Man With One Red Shoe, is a great Tom Hanks movie. I think it was his first one after Splash. You’d also love Turner and Hooch. It’s him and a dog as cop partners. Lol
The scene where he wishes he was big was spoofed in Family Guy where Stewie asked for the same thing, except the machine tells him," I wish I could weigh people." And Stewie goes, "Damn it!" Lol!!

I dunno, I feel like the wardrobe for Elizabeth Perkins in this film was *particularly* ugly, as if it were some sort of commentary on the nature of her character. I mean there are plenty of 80s films where the wardrobe is cool and attractive, even if dated.
This was the crossover role for Tom Hanks, as it was the first film film really show his abilities as a dramatic actor (his previous roles had all been goofball comedies). He was nominated for an Oscar for this role and it began his career as a leading man.
Tom Hanks got recognized by being in a SitCom called "Bosom Buddies" from 1980 to 1982 with Peter Scolari. Scolari's peak was in another SitCom, Bob Newhart's "Newhart".

Over the next six to seven years after Big was released, Hanks would become the number 1 box office draw in films like Philadelphia, Forrest Gump and Apollo 13. Amazing.
I think he had a run of 3 or 4 best actor nominations in a row.
Can you believe he almost played Mario in the Super Mario Brothers movie?
Plus, Toy Story.
Hanks is my favorite...

He was in films like "He Knows You're Alone" and "Bachelor Party" before he did "Splash."
I think his first film (as in lead role) was Mazes & Monsters.

That game is Racketball. Squash is also similar, but Squash is played indoors because you can hit the ball off all 4 walls in that game.
RaQuetball.
Actually, you got it backwards....Squash is the outdoor game with 1 wall, and Raquetball is the game in a room.
I used to play the indoor game with a friend when were still in college, it's fun!
The actor that played the younger “Josh” was on set all the time. They did scenes without cameras rolling to see how he would act the scene out. Tom Hanks would observe the boy’s idiosyncrasies and then copied them when cameras were rolling .
That's news to me... But I heard he followed the kid's lead for his speech patterns in Forrest Gump.
Illusion shattering. It's like finding out all of Mike Myers characters were just impressions of people he knew in real life.
As to my "old people" example:
You can actually tell from FOOTPRINTS if the person was an old, or a young man!
@@lawr5764 yes that’s also true. They had trouble getting past the boy’s accent so they had Tom Hanks emulate it
