Edmontonians bracing for potential U.S. tariff impact at grocery stores

- With the looming threat of U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods entering the country, what could a consumer push to buy homegrown products look like on your next trip to the grocery store?
The stores will raise all the prices, trying to buy Canadian won't save us anything.
Well time to stop buying anything made in us. Learning how to benifit the Canadian economy 🇨🇦
Good luck with that
You don’t eat fresh vegetables and fruit? Eggs? Meat? Cereal? Meat? Wear clothes, shoes, underwear? You can’t live on ketchup lol. You live at home with parents right? 😂
We all just watched the same video. did you watch it on mute?
I will need to use the Food Bank!
Uhm, that is not how tariffs work. It is the AMERICANS that will pay a 25% Tariff on CANADIAN products in the USA. The Canadian government has not yet indicated that they will introduce a retaliatory tariff on American products sold in Canada, although they probably should. You should always buy Canadian anyways, to support nationalism. I am surprised this news channel released this misinformation and all these people fell for it. After COVID people have really lost their sense of reasoning...
I was wondering if Trump was adding tax to US exports. That's the only thing that would make sense here
@@royvirafayet6687if so we can use refuse to pay it.
@royvirafayet6687 That's what we need to do export taxes. He'll try to do carve outs for oil and minerals when he finally figures it out, and we need to apply them if he exempt anything.
This will make them pay into our fed revenue.
Buy Canadian? Is that a joke? Nobody will pay for exorbitant price in the name of nationalism.
@@parasitego I've been shocked in the last week on how much of the produce I buy is from Canada. This is going to take a huge effort when it comes to reading labels. We are so intertwined with the US
Buy 🇨🇦 whenever you can
"Are we talking about ingredients, are we talking about a brand, are we talking about ownership, are we talking about a store?" The most out of touch take. It's pretty simple: don't go to Walmart (an proudly American company that took pride in destroying Canadian stores in multiple cities across the country) and don't buy things that were made in the US.
Good luck surviving on Heinz ketchup 😂. You live at home with parents and never had to buy anything ever right? 😂 And with the tariffs, even more Canadian businesses will close shop and head south.
Prices were already high due to COVID .we made it this far and we will survive again. Just be thankful you can eat where some countries can't instead of crying...
Agreed, but what happens if the Stock market crashes, inflation and the CAD dollar drops,say,15 cents or more. Then
what?
If you will not start relying on yourself, you will always be exploited.
Cant afford to eat need gas to get to work .. whats the piont
I am now checking every label and boycotting ALL US products. I'd rather buy from China than the US now. Loads of fresh fruit and veg from right here in Canada, and a great selection of products from countries other than the US.
Most of the stuff in America is already coming from china 😂
few suggetions; support local grocers and farmers, maybe even try home farming if you are able to. start the concept of group buying, gather your neighbours like the entire street or streets, and start a pool and purchase products as a group buyer for maximum effectiveness and discount.
I agree! It would be nice to have people take community gardens seriously and perhaps even have neighborhood food coops.
Farmer's Markets will be packed, literally but also i general.
But what are we going to do in the winter?? all of our produce and fruits come from or through the states....with that tariff war, we will suffer more than they will even the price of gas will go up, because we send our oil to the US to be refined,..
@maggypregnolato5517 it will be tough regardless but try not to panick - budgeting early/ inadvance mentally and/or physically would suffice, if not already incorporated in everyday lifestyle.
Register at local foodbank(s), many churches have hot lunches, dinners, etc. but the cost of living ingeneral (as you had already mentioned), will go up.
Due to that and also to stablize the mental Mind of All Canadians, wages and supports will have to increase as well for balance, stability, eqUalibrium of family needs...just like when there are price-hikes thru the years, wages increase to 'try to help prevent' collapse.
If you can save a little bit of money each month (depends on currency input of household/ single, over time), purchase a portable agriculture vegatable growing machine/ start growing your own vegetables and/herbs, either as a primary/ secondary food source...indoor gardening.
Also shopping local/ as others mentioned, adjust diet (first consult w/ your family doctor, dietian, nutritionist for healtb options and rezources) and buy Canadian.
Eitber way, we'll all have too adjust mentally, physically, spiritually, fianancially, and modt importantly, socially...amongst ourselves and each otber as Family takes care of Family, tbe hUman Family but in our 'immediate' case, the Canadian Family (for connection, food, the cost of living, etc.) but also otbers that are in Canada from elsewhere and everyone elsewhere b/c We as in hUmans are All the Same at 'default,' regardless.
I stopped going to farmers markets because they cheat. They resell the same produce as the store. Rip off scammers hard pass.
Buy as much local as possible
Don’t vote woke or you go broke ! Trudeau is to blame
stuff coming from the Us won't have tariff it's our stuff going to Us .
can we sue citynews for fake news then?
Tariffs make Canadian dollar weaker. Which means imports cost more , Prices goes up!!!!!!!
Exactly. Tariffs hurt the consumer buying power within the country imposing the import taxes. If Canadian exporters want to keep their sales up in the United States then they are going to have to make sure that the quality is good enough to justify the higher price for American consumers. But the price of lettuce in Canada will go up IF the Canadian government decides to impose an import tariff on U.S. lettuce.
We can get many of those fruits and veggies from Mexico. But I have plans for a victory garden in the spring/summer, too.
Indoor greenhouse 3d/aeroponic gardening is a growing industry, and I hope our country embraces it. But this is a good lesson in how we need to be more independent at least partially, embrace new tech, and diversify our trading partners.
What I want to know is, who is responsible for deciding on what products are sourced for our stores. Is it the companies buyers? How can buyers and suppliers come together inside our borders to start providing more affordable "local" options. I truly don't know how it works but have pondered this for years. Why it costs less to transport from further away than to buy closer to home. I think it should be a motivation for the owners of the big stores, even without this mess going on. The insanity of pumping out fuel emissions to move goods all over the world, while also shipping our garbage elsewhere when we're done with it. Having it end up in third world countries landfills where they're even less able to process it than we are. Just because it's all cheaper that way. So much for climate awareness
Eat Canadian. Buy seasonal fruits and vegetables. Not hard😂
...half the US veggies make you sick anyway
well to be fair you are supposed to chew then swallow them not try and deep throat them.
@@pacman3556man, I guess I have been eating vegetables all wrong
@@player_566-1 probably. You are supposed to put them in your mouth and chew them not insert them rectally
Support local and support Canada!
Local grocery stores and local farmers markets and made in Canada.
Us put tariff for Canadian export.
Why price get high for the things which come from US to Canada? Does Canada also planning to put tariffs, the things come from US to Canada? Doesn’t make sense what reporter says
In ontario often i buy fruits ftom chile peru south africa. There are options.
As if the US is going to care about a few people boycotting their products. The increase in cost will make it an involuntary boycott since most people don’t have any room left in their budget for increases in the cost of food. Those prices are increasing as our dollar loses value against the US dollar and a trade war isn’t going to help. The aid package the government is planning will lead to a rise in inflation and an increase in our debt while accomplishing nothing. Just think about how much more secure our border would be if that aid money was spent on securing the border. Trudeau had planned 1.3 billion to secure the border and that was going to be spread out over three years yet he is ready to spend tens of billions on an aid package for businesses and people effected by the tariffs. If the same amount was spent on securing the border and the equipment needed to do the job was purchased from the US Trump would be happy, the border would be more secure and we would have the equipment instead just more debt and inflation.
Buy from your local farms. Buy pass the grocery store & only buy from the farmer. ❤❤❤
As Canadians we need to face facts, the U.S. is way to fickle a trading partner. We need to divest ourselves of so much trading with them, in reality what do they offer that we can't obtain from, our other trade partners? We already get food from Mexico, south America, China etc so let's look at more trade with them and less with the USA.
Buy from local farmers Canada grows food here believe it or not.
Trudeau in office or not the Liberal party of Canada has already lost the tariff fight against US President Donald Trump.
How about those Mexican tomatoes Pierre been talking about. They cheaper than the Ontario ones 😅
Plant a garden
@@hockeyaddict7007 I changed to frozen after all the vegetable rot in my refrigerator PS I used to buy salad but it went up for 5 bucks to $7.50 and I know how to make really good salad dressing
@@hockeyaddict7007 It's Jan , much longer wait then 6 months for that salad.
Already did, last year. My pantries are full of food. I hardly ever go to the grocery store 👍🇨🇦
If the Canadian Gov does not impose tariffs on a particular produce such as fresh broccoli from California, and that broccoli increases in price by 25%, then I would strongly suspect the food seller is amorally imposing Greedflation.
Edmonton onion come from taber, have you ever notice while buying at store?
Don’t surrender Canada. Fight gallantly like your esteemed ancestors.
Eat differently and don't buy made in usa.
Do you mean eating snow ? 😢😮😅
You’re an idiot. You really are. Don’t buy use, while using an American social media platform. Look out the window we need the USA. If you want to boycott boycott china.

But you can’t afford to Canadian products
You can heat a Green House at home using solar power. Large batteries that charge batteries that Run a water heater in a large tank of water. That tank of water will keep your small greenhouse warm all winter. Go to peavey mart get a cattle water heater.. think theres some sales on. You could also just plug it into the wall. Theres a tip for you. Thermal mass is amazing and the best conductor is water.
Canadians need to Boycott Florida Orange Juice since Florida is the Homeland of Donald Trump!
Store should sell cheap dont wait till.about to got rotten then put on the other rack as a clearance. I guess time for dumpster diving where you get for free and stll good condition .
Eat the oil
Well we had a great run for the past 75 years. No it's time to go back in time. Growing your own food, gardening and using or requiring only what you need. Instead of what you want. We can do this.
Corporate greed will also take a huge advantage.
Lawblaws will never bring the prices down, only up up uo!
Loblaws is not a charity. Blame the government for this.
It is OK in Candia 😁

Don't buy from the USA
I will so don’t worry
It just gives all grocery stores and other businesses a reason to raise their prices more Canadians ...This is what happens when media puts out fear and our clown government doesn't takes measures to avoid a problem like this..This could of been solved easily..
team 51 canadians for Trump.
fill the canal
drain the swamp
send the migrants to greenland
mars and beyond
tax the snow birds too for flying through US airspace.
Taber sweet onions!
I hope that hydroponic products become far more available.
Springmix lettuce doubled in price already - before tariffs even have started
It all depends how the Canadian govt reacts. If the US puts 25% tariffs on all products from Canada going into the US that has nothing to do with Canadians. The US company importing the product will pay the tariff and pass that cost onto their US customers. It won't effect any products in Canada at all.
If however the Canadian govt retaliates with tariffs on US products then it will have an effect on pricing inside Canada. However so far Canada govt has said it wouldn't be an across the board tariff like Trump is proposing. It would be on selected items that Canadian can easier switch to alternatives- example tariff US oranges then either substitute for a different fruit or source it from a different country. Canada govt is also proposing other ways to retaliate like cutting off power supply and oil. This could hurt Canadians by reducing the demand thereby reducing labour/ jobs but it would effect the US more (they can't run have the north eastern states with no power).
This whole province needs to analyze who they stand with.... the Left, or the wrong.
I have a hard time picking any sides. Picking sides is what got the US into the mess they are in.
@@amyfawkes6153 So you're suggesting we do nothing?
@ no but I'm say we shouldn't be choosing liberal or conservative ideologies just because of the party they belong too. Make the parties answer to every decision they make.
grow your food at home ....its easy to do , if you have garden or a balcony you can make it happen ....but dont expect famers in canada to grow everything because its not going to happen any more ....
Famers in canada dont make much money so they dont grow much .
But if you can grow your own food in back yard then thats the start !
It's only easy if you have space to do it. Most people I know live in small apartments.
The government of Canada should be throwing BILLIONS into SW Ontario. There is technology here to put winter production under glass and offset the US contingencies.
BUT - nobody in Ottawa is that smart!
It was tomato’s and veggies but now all south west is grow opps I hauled 36 inch gas pipe to Embridge to supply miles of green houses, the sky at night is purple
Boycotting on the individual level will mostly be sporadic. If you’ve been doing something a certain way for years, it will be very hard to change the habit. Price shopping will have to be done at home because traveling to get the information will cost a lot of resources and be self-defeating. Will that information even be relevant in the end?
Well ill buy local farmers ...😂
We dont need no stinking food analyst😂
remember. stealing is an option
Don't blame trump. Blame trudeau.
Reciprocal tariffs incoming from Canada.
Time to go back to when East coasters ate Lobster and potatoes all you can eat near free. Fishing in ocean should be free.
Uh…no impact unless Canada puts tariffs on US goods. Remember…the country imposing the tariffs pays them….
Wrong
Exactly! It’ll be Canadian tariffs making American goods more expensive..
They need made in canada isles
“Read”
Uhhhhh that’s not how tariffs work…
Start with "Put America Last" and proceed from there.
Ok who would protect you from a hostile attack your military haha y’all need us alot more than we need you think about it
The lack of workers in US agriculture industry due to mass deportation will raise American food prices regard less of tariffs.
I always buy made in canada
The price you pay for putting all your eggs in one awful basket (america)
Invest into winter agriculture research and different endemic plants
I go by price. Wherever it comes from.
we have food from all over the world cuz its cheaper to buy those imports than it is to grow it in Canada cuz the govt needs to tax you into pain and submission
or we get food from all over the world because it is difficult to grow things like oranges and grapefruits etc in Canadian climates. Also other countries have longer grow seasons or can have more than one or two harvest a year.
Oh well time change diet
It is not their tariffs on our goods that will drastically increase prices at the grocery stores.
It's the deportation of farm workers and food processors that will create scarcity and increase prices.
That and any retaliation we take on food and produce.
It's just better off if our food chain finds other suppliers.
Brazil and Mexico are large agricultural exporters.
But we don't have to tariff food because they won't have enough to sell.
They are deporting everyone that gets their products out of the ground. This is very bad for Canada and the US. China will be laughing
Thank you for clarification! I didn't understand how the 25% tariff on Canadian Goods going to America would impact American Goods coming into Canada. They should of clarified that.
CANADA SHOULD SEEK NEW COMMERCIAL/TRADE ALLIANCES.
CANADA SHOULD BUY THEIR PRODUCE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES, LIKE MEXICO AND OTHER LATIN COUNTRIES TO COUNTER THE EFFECT OF POTENTIAL TARIFF, OIL AND GAS AND ANYTHING ELSE WE TRADE WITH THE USA 🇺🇸 SHOULD BE ON THE LIST OF ITEMS TO BEGIN TRADE ELSEWHERE IN THE WORLD.
Ya it not on what we bring in right it’s on what we sell to the states, if that’s right the media should get it right trump did that on Quebecs dairy products before and they still made it
Is it just Edmontonians so I guess I don't have to worry !
Why on earth are the melons in baskets?!
Why we don’t them from Mexico
The US acted. We respond. Simple as that
So sad to see US blackmailing poor Canada again ! In the EU we have like national stickers on products, but we have such a large domestic market to begin with. We of course do not import lower quality food from the US. Only UK what is closest but its out marketed by our great EU products. Food from outside EU is minimal and in special sections of shops. I think outside 🍁 sirop we don’t really have something from Canada… Food from US is also minimal because it does not meet the EU regulations on food security. For Canadians , try to support local businesses! Support Canada❤ 🇨🇦
Lower food quality 🤣🤣 you probably think your plastic noodle ramen is top health hahaha
Never going to have tariffs with flip flop Trump.MAGA

Why r’nt you ppl complaining about the price of gas going up as well as everything else going up by your govt? They increase things here on a regular basis and i dont hear folks whining about that. If prices r going up, it shouldn’t matter who is increasing them it is still a heart-ship. It is expensive to live here!!! Why is that?
