No problem at all! Thanks for such a great experience! It's not often we play so many games of something in such a short space of time, but you both have created such an engaging and addictive experience. We can't wait to play the other games in the series we haven't tried yet, and actually contacted Osprey a few days about to ask about a collaboration to create an Undaunted Buyer's Guide. Thanks again, and looking forward to The Battle of Britain!
Thank you for the experience! It was incredibly addictive! I think a highlight of how good this is was about 10-12 games in when things got a bit tetchy between us (it's a tense game!) and we decided to put it away and take a break for a few days. We subsequently got it out first thing next morning and played another 3 games :D.
I enjoyed your review. I just got my copy and look forward to playing. Maybe in the scenarios where you say it is unbalanced and favors one side, that is realistic for war and the history and that one side is up against tough odds and is in a desperate situation and their hope is to delay or at least inflict some losses on the enemy before withdrawing and surrendering the area?
Yea, I mean some scenarios are one side attacking the "base" of the other, which of course would put one side at a disadvantage so it makes sense in terms of the design and scenario framing.
Great review. Can you make a video of top board games with best component quality, production values, and box organization. You know games likes wingspan, scythe comes to mind, for good box inserts, quality of components.
Introduced Undaunted North Africa to two different people over the weekend, they both really enjoyed it! Haven’t played through enough of Normandy and North Africa and Reinforcements yet to justify Stalingrad, but it sure looks fun and definitely tense!! Which playlist did you guys find?
Glad to hear that! We've only played Normandy and this, but can't wait to try the others! It's literally just called "World War 2 songs" but it's got loads in all languages and beside it setting the mood, they all are just great songs.
I first played Undaunted in November and fell in love so hard I immediately bought everything. My general opinion, Normandy is cracking, North Africa is also very good but a bit more wild and swingy (for me it's a more 'cinematic' experience if that makes sense, still absolutely brilliant though, just a different feel). If you like either Reinforcements is ESSENTIAL (sadly mostly out of stock, I had to get my copy from overseas) which is not the case for many expansions in my experience. Stalingrad is on my shelf ready to be played and I can't wait. The drama and stories these games generate with so little is amazing - boardgaming alchemy
Good question. Probably Normandy or North Africa. They are cheap with a lot of content, so if you don't end up liking it, you haven't blown a bunch of money on the big box campaign game. That said, Stalingrad is the best experience.
@@rubenmusto Depends who you ask ha! I prefer North Africa because of the asymmetry, but Tallie prefers Normandy. Normandy is great for both being on even footing with almost the same decks, whereas NA makes both side feel rather different.
I have not played the game. I have been a wargamer for close to 50 years (in addition to generally being a boardgamer), so it is nice to see a somewhat mainstream war game. That doesn't happen often, but there is occasionally the Memoir 44 type lighter wargame that breaks into the mainstream. Unfortunate timing IMO though. I honestly don't want anything to do with a game where I may be rooting for or humanizing the Russian army of any era, given current world events. I am sure that other people don't care or can compartmentalize. In recent years, people are (rightly) becoming sensitive in reviewing and discussing other game topics - topics relatively far back in history - but the connections here I guess are not obvious enough to people, despite the current events connection. Maybe we are too comfortable in our American and western European cocoons.
Yea, I can completely understand that point of view. However, I would disagree with there being a direct connection to current events which would require people to shun this game. I'd argue that the Soviet Union and Russia are distinct entities with different ideologies, and I don't think making a game about a key battle/turning point in WWII which features the Soviet Union glorifies the horrific actions of Russia today. By the same measure, playing as the Nazi's in any WWII game is something that should be avoided, because you would be rooting for them, which would take almost every WWII game out of contention. I'm not saying there isn't a discussion to be had about that either, I just think it's very tricky subject to navigate and put a defining line in the sand about what you should and shouldn't associate with. Completely respect your opinion though, and it's a good topic for discussion.
@@BoardOfItReviews The leader of Russia is basically trying to revive the USSR, so I disagree. My mother's Karelia was invaded by the USSR unprovoked the same as Ukraine with this Russia. No difference. The difference with the Nazis is that there is no more Nazi state.
We'll just have to agree to disagree. It's very important to review and speak on what is being glorified (and shouldn't be) in different mediums, but I don't see this as glorifying the Soviet Union or the atrocities currently occurring. In fact the game is rather bleak, and certainly doesn't cast anyone as heroes, considering the two sides involved. I think it's important to not ignore these historical events but to use them as a learning point. I ended up doing a history dive on the battle and the sides involved as a result of playing! That said, I fully understand your feelings on the matter having a personal stake in it. You're completely right to feel that way. I just don't think it's right to disparage everyone who would be open to playing a game featuring the Soviet Union or Russia regardless of context. As a counterpoint, a close friend is from a former Soviet Union country and his family suffered as a result of the occupation, and their resistance against it...his favourite games are Twilight Struggle and Scythe!
That's really funny to hear from a wargamer. Usually it's casual players that make this kind of (sorry to say, narrow-minded) remarks, wargamers should have a more objective approach, every wargame is a history lesson.
Thank you both so much for the amazing review!

Our thoughts exactly! 🙌🏻
Do you suggest Stalingrad to start with Undaunted or Normandy/North Africa?
