This is a good point that is made in The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking by Berger and Starbird. It's actually the first one: Understand the basics deeply because there's no point moving on until you do.
So true what Steve is saying here. You can always tell the people that just want to move on to the 'next thing' in Lau, without constantly reviewing and refining what they have previously learned. And it gets exposed at the higher levels when their technique is revealed to be sloppy and completely lacking in polish.
