I like the idea of alternate pages starting from the front and back to give you, in effect, four notebooks. Had you considered turning the notebook upside down when writing in the back?
That way if/when the two end meet you'll have a defined join.

Cool. Hobo looked too large for my purposes, but it’s all good. I now have a small commonplace for daily carry, then I can later transfer it to a larger notebook.
I’m shifting away from my fountain pens just because of the need to keep refilling and the smearing, now using rollerball pens.

Love this! So many thoughts... where did you get the small covers though??? Atomic Habits is IT! Great book that I go back to every year. I'm a writing and book geek too. Madame Bovary brings back the memories! Have you tried The Brothers Karamazov? These days because I'm so busy, I only read for pleasure a little (I'm making my way through classic and contemporary utopian novels because, well, maybe it helps to think of better models for living) but I do listen to a lot of audio books. Having a small journal to do a mind dump would be great. I'm currently using a "Passion Planner" and a regular weekly printed calendar. But there isn't enough space in either for daily reflection. I want to try your small notebook setup. But I'm not seeing the small covers for sale.

    • @ALLinHerMovements

Thank you!!! I could talk forever about the books I've read (and hope to read). [Did I mention Atomic Habits in the video? I did read it. Even better, is Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman.]
I purchased my small journal covers through makr.com/stationery. A little pricey, but It has a lot of space to write, and it is still thin and compact. And the leather looks and feels great. I like the open format, so I can organize the pages whichever way I like, and still leave open space for free-journalling. Sometimes I'll just do a free-stream, whatever is running through my head, but it forces me to slow down my thoughts down to the speed of my writing.
I didn't think anyone would pick up on my brief mention of Faubert's Madame Bovary!! I loved reading that book and taking away those lessons on life, relationships, and materialism. I also liked Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich. I really want to read more of Tolstoy. I tried out War and Peace, but only made it through a few pages. I will try it again.
Right now, Homer's The Iliad is a great read, and I always like going back to Thoreau, or anything on Abraham Lincoln (My All-Time Hero)
I don't read much contemporary fiction, but Dune was my most recent book, and I'm looking forward to seeing the next movie.

@@sc1 I was an English major in a previous life 😉 and I took a class called “Love, Sex,and Adultery in Russian Literature.” One of the absolute best classes ever, taught by a famous Russian scholar; so many LONG novels but also valuable lessons and great philosophical threads of conversation. Because of that past, I have a whole library of physical books (mostly literature) that I just can’t part with. I wish I could get rid of most of my books and read on the Kindle but I really like either listening to books read by fantastic storytellers or holding them in my own hands. I never made it through War and Peace either! Now I think I’ll spend my retirement reading it and watching Sidney Poitier films. You didn’t directly mention Atomic Habits but what you said about the compounding interest of small changes made me think you had read it. Thanks for the link to the covers!

Talk about separating, disregarding the impulse to move writing to some electronic form. That niggling impulse must be fairly common. I would suggest it interferes with, take physical pen in hand and write. Please comment.

    first time viewer here
when I saw you made a commonplace book video I figured it was your normal content but this is a watch channel? I'm intrigued lol
it seems like your system has a lot of moving parts but I guess that makes sense if you like fancy watches haha
just casually mentioning two solid titles: how I use my commonplace book notebook + how I read and take notes
let me know in the comments what's in your journal: too much haha. imagine 40,000 pages. now imagine the storage process xD
you might find one of my former methods to be much more interesting though (due to the focus on watches and cycles and stuff)
I used to keep "monthly binders" and the way that worked is that I had 12 binders full of low priority information that I would review only during that specific month of the year and slowly condense the information into my commonplace book

Hi, I’m mainly a Rolex and Leica Channel, but then I occasionally throw in some odd content (Barbour, BMW, Alden, suits, pens, notebooks).
I was trying to find the perfect (for me) journal system, to take with me everywhere, and I think I found it with this notebook. I still have the larger Midori Goat Leather at home to store my long term quotations.

@@sc1 It was neat to see the clear focus on the functionality on what you actually wanted. What I mean is that people will say stuff like yeah man I like this product because I like it. But you actually focused on something that does what you want: it can physically go places. I guess that means no zettelkasten for you haha. Do you ever take pictures of your notebooks to create a sort of backup in case you lose something? Or is it more like bro just don't lose things? Thanks for the super quick reply!

    • @sc1
      @sc1  5 месяцев назад +1

I haven't tried out the zettelkasten yet. It seems like it's the same thing as a Slip-Note System. For this type of technical or dense information, I use the digital app Craft. It keeps everything organized, I can move things around, and most importantly hyperlink terms, and cross-reference items with a click. (I guess kind of like Obsidian). But maybe I'll try out zettelkasten on a small scale.
I don't use my Commonplace to hold technical information. The most valuable items would be significant quotations, in that case, I regularly manually back up these into my large Midori notebook.
