Never store coins on an exchange. If your coins are on a exchange then they are not your coins.
If you want save staking rewards without risking your coins use a ledger for storage and stake with yoroi wallet for example.
Your coins remain on blockchain, your keys are on the ledger and staking rewards come steady.
No risk, other then the coins volalitlity

Does you Crypto have to be on a exchange to be staked, can I stake while it’s in my cold wallet
You can stake through cold storage, but the crytpo will leave your wallet and enter a staking pool.
You can stake Tezos inside your wallet (even cold wallet like ledger) and it never leaves your wallet. You are at full control at all times.
staking is probably the worst thing to do currently

Kucoin is done in Us for awhile now. I think kyc issues and they recently just got hit due to some shady money issues. Also goodluck buying crypto in Ny.
You are an expat aren't you? Which country did you go for because we both know you don't live in the US? Also in the beginning. Did you stake for almost 2 years (19months)? If not then you probably put more than $15K (more like $25k) because those return don't add up @ 7% APY.
