Testing both sneakers and steel toe leather safety boots versus glancing axe blows and explaining why wearing chain mail is the best protection
Example of the effectiveness of chainmail ruclips.net/video/NLzmmVmY9Tg/видео.html

Dam, that guy took a direct hit to the foot and he kept on swinging. Absolute Badass.
Great video. One thing I suppose for many watching timber sport competition is they don't see the chain mail that competitors are wearing. Out of sight, out of mind. I think if it was more visible more folks would use it.
Great PSA, Ben. After seeing a few bad injuries, I don’t think I’d chop much without them anymore. One thing you Euros don’t consider, that Americans think about is that a trip to the hospital for us means $1ks of dollars, even with private insurance.
Even without paying for heathcare not being able to walk for properly 6 months could cost you your job and tens of thousands in lost wages
The foot is a very complex structure. Any protection is a very good idea.
I had a tiny cut on my hand that severed a tendon, took a year to be right again. The foot is full of tendons
@@benscottwoodchopper I work in the manufacture of orthotic devices some of the sights we see would make your teeth curl.
Feet tend to go under the radar but once damaged its a long road back to full function.
@@thornwarbler funnily enough the reason I sacrificed these shoes was because I had been wearing too tight shoes for years and my toes have finally started to straighten. had bad balance and walking because of it but used to ignore it
I attached some metal strapping to the inside of my boots.
Great information Ben. I would think you would be well bruised even with the mail but at least your toes would be still there
Yeah bruising, maybe a broken toe but much better than the alternative
I don't know if you saw my post on the cordwood challenge FB page, but I hit my shin this past weekend. Definitely wished I had chainmail! I'm OK after getting stitched up but it wasn't fun and I was pretty lucky; it could have been a lot worse. What went wrong were things that you have covered before and that I was aware of (not as aware as I am now, though!). I was doing cordwood cutting in a dense stand so I had a smaller tree that was hung up and I was bringing down in sections and that meant that I was chopping high (bad) and didn't have room to position myself properly (worse). Basically, an accident waiting to happen but I wasn't thinking. I was aware that the situation wasn't great so I wasn't doing full power swings, which probably made the injury less bad than it could have been but it could have been avoided altogether with better decision making.
Sorry to hear that, i nearly had the same happen once
Mr. Matt, I am not on FACEBOOK but I would be interested in your injury...
@@Brian2bears I might make a video about it. I haven’t decided. I wasn’t recording while it happened so I would have to stage a recreation.
Mr. Ben you do some of the greatest axe safety videos. Very graphic to the axeman, I felt the bite several times in this episode. Well done sir...
cheers! just hoping to help stop as many injuries as i can
Ben, I hope you didn't get any enjoyment out of axing your Chuck Taylor All Stars or your leather boots!
Love what you do the help us ben!
Also thank you for sacrificing your shoes😅
This is very important for newbies to see. Hell, even professionals.
You're awesome man.
Cheers! they were pretty worn out and no longer fit so thought they'd be good for demonstration
@benscottwoodchopper Right on, it's for a good cause.
I hope everyone sees this.
I wish I saw this when I first started chopping.
I glanced off a knot and sliced the side of my foot open.
I needed 16 stitches and couldn't walk without pain for almost 3 months.
I was very lucky that nothing serious happened.
I definitely learned a valuable lesson that day.
So I appreciate the work you do to help people be safe!
Sharp axes are no joke.
Keep up the good work Ben, been a fan for a long time now, it's always good to see you uploading.
Another great axe safety demonstration video Ben! Thank you for continually reminding people that an axe is a dangerous tool and showing how little protection normal footwear offers.
The boot demonstration really drives home the point.
great and important video, thank you so much!
Just to clarify you actually have to wear chainmail when chopping in the timbersports
One of the best axe videos ever, hope people appreciate what you are doing!
Safety first.
For sure.
Speaking from experience £200 for mail more than makes up for the 2 wks not been able to walk from hultafors to the shin. 12 stitches and scarring my son for life at amount of blood is well worth it 😂😂
Absolutely, foot damage is even worse. There was a young lad hit himself last year and couldnt walk properly for months
@@benscottwoodchopper
It was that bad I still wince at the thought of the steel hitting bone 😅🤢🤢
Ben, I have to say that I very much enjoy your videos. They have been very influential on my development as a hobby forester. Thank you for including us in your hand tool work and play. ,Chris
Cheers! glad you enjoy them
'em
Eh?
