My greatest (first world problems) regret is that my dad's old M6 is 0.85 and 35mm is the widest it can go before needing an external viewfinder. I toyed with the idea of getting another M6 in 0.7 but in the end picked up a Leica Q3 last week and couldn't be happier. So now my minimal kit has a Leica Q3 and an M6 with 50mm Summilux. 28/50 is a match made in heaven!

28mm gang, politely checking in. I’ve got the MS-Optics Apoqualia which produces some quirky imagery with a ton of character across f/2-4 when I have to shoot at those apertures. Loving it so far. Enjoyed the video, Gene!

Love 28! Especially for family/travel/interior/street as in your examples. I have went from 50 to 35 to 28 on my M7. But the real game changer came when changing to a 0.58. Especially when you wear glasses🤓Do it🙏🏻

Hey @GeneYoon great video! 28 has been my staple since my Fuji days (mostly switched over to Leica now), when I started realizing that the focal length (and lens) I loved the most was my xf18mm f2 (27-28mm FF). That lens is pretty much hated unanimously in the Fuji community, but it has a certain charm to its images that’s hard to replicate. When I switched to Leica, originally when I bought the MP, I got the 28 Ultron II, but it for whatever reason doesn’t mount on my camera properly (tried 3 lol). I upgraded to the 28mm Elmarit ASPH II and haven’t looked back. The lens at normal distances (not super close up on a subject) just has such a beautiful rendering to it; so all that is to say, not only am I in the 28 camp with you, I’m also in the 28 Elmarit ASPH camp!!

28mm on a rangefinder is awesome because zone focussing becomes easier than with a 35mm or 50mm. It can make the M camera a point and shoot in a way.

My challenge is I have an m6 / ttl .85 which means I can’t see the frame lines. A buddy of mine loan me his 28 mm Leica and I tried framing, thinking just use the edge of the view finder. I tried but even with ‘pretending’ the view finder edges will wok as my frame limes..but no joy because it’s even wider than the the view finder..any thoughts?

You can portray a person by strictly focusing on him/her. Or you can portray someone by giving the contest in which he/she lives, which brings so much more about your subject. I fell in love with 28 when Leica released the first 28 Summicron: stunning lens, lightweight, fast, sharp. I bought an M6 0.58 for it and they are permanently together. Hyper focal focusing makes it faster than an AF lens. Enjoy

Hi Gene. It’s great you’ve found a lens you love. I do think some of the images if you had gone a bit closer would show more dynamism and impact. Wide angle lens without a foreground element usually create “flat” images because of the depth of field. Though from the images it seems your intention was to record a moment. Theres a balance between too close and close. Too close and you get warped / distorted perspective when its a human subject. Thank you Gene
