Use hot glue instead of wood glue and be done in 30 seconds instead of 30 mins.
Since it's cork, the wood glue isn't really giving you any benefit over hot glue strengthwise.
Also, cork is probably an adequately soft surface, but put some felt or velvet over the top for an even more scratchproof surface.
