The Shark Cull

  • Sea Shepherd's "THE SHARK CULL" documentary explores the Western Australian shark cull, exposing the brutal cruelty of the controversial program that took place between late January 26 2014 and 30 April 2014. The documentary features an interview with Sharon Burden (mother of Kyle Burden, tragically taken in 2011 by a White Shark), Skyler Thomas, Jeff Hansen, Nicole McLaughlin, Craig Moss and Mike Dicks - captain of the Sea Shepherd vessel “Bruce the RIB.”
Despite the harrowing footage, the millions of dollars required and the community outcry regarding this initiative, the Western Australian Government applied for a three-year extension of the program. Sea Shepherd, along with No Shark Cull Inc. The Greens (WA) and Labor (WA) played an instrumental role in the prevention of static drum lines being used after the three-month trial. By bringing transparency to effects of this program, and its failures, as well as utilising Sea Shepherd supporters to appeal against the three-year proposal, the campaign finally had a win when on 11 September 2014 the Environmental Protection Authority recommended that the program cease due to its unknown environmental impacts. In the end, the WA Government ceased its controversial drum line program.
Sea Shepherd is committed to raising awareness and transparency regarding the use of shark nets and drum lines currently being used ongoing in New South Wales and Queensland, as well as the newly formed “serious threat policy” in Western Australia which enables a shark to be hunted and killed whenever it poses a serious threat (for merely swimming in the ocean, hanging around an area for longer than the WA government would like). By raising awareness and transparency, it is hoped that the general community will again rise as one to demand non-lethal alternative techniques to shark bite mitigation, instead of 1930’s thinking. Today, we don't have to choose between protecting human life or marine life, we can do both with modern day alternatives. Its time to do away with indiscriminate killing devices like shark nets and drum lines that merely provide a false sense of security, wiping out thousands of marine life including whales, turtles, dolphins, dugongs, rays and non target, non deemed threatening sharks.
This explosive documentary is a must see for anyone interested in the protection of sharks and marine conservation.
Please note that there are images in this documentary of sharks being shot with a powerhead and then being pulled up the ramp bleeding. Parental guidance and viewer discretion is advised.

Being a mechanical fitter/welder I've spent countless hours on skyscrapers at the Gold Coast QLd and in around Perth, mainly welding/fabricating gangways on the top of these buildings. Looking out from that vantage point you'd see sharks swimming up and down the coast, not bothering the countless people swimming. I was also a volunteer surf lifesaver for near on 20 years & the sharks seen to attack ratio is staggering, we've seen hundreds upon hundreds of sharks over the years and have had 0 attacks in my 20 years. If you counted the amount of people swimming around out coast line each and everyday compared to shark attacks the % is ridiculous!

@Aussie Atheist Thank you for sharing your deeply valuable perspective after 2 decades of real life experience concerning the shark / human interaction dynamic.
There are 7 billlion humans on this planet yet the number of shark fatalities / major injuries to humans is tiny. Meanwhile we are killing sharks each year by the 100’s of

Hey, if the lady doesn't want to go in the water that's her decision. The oceans are the sharks home and you have no right to kill them because you want to go into their home, just try going into somebody's home without their permission and see what happens to you, I bet you have a better chance of ending up dead going into another humans home then the sharks home.

Growing up I would always watch Steve Irwin and I would think about what a miracle Australia is. I pictured it as the last real safe haven for animals. @sbjkd They did it so it would look like they were doing something about it. Their image. Just because people are fallible doesn't mean they shouldn't be called out for doing something wrong, especially when it is a government who knows better. I think there are better ways than just killing s ton of sharks, which already aren't doing too well. We need to stop being so reactionary about these things and instead educate people about the situation. I'm sure it was a very traumatic experience for all involved, but I don't think it is a good enough reason to kill hundreds of sharks that had nothing to do with the attack.

Its so disgusting that people out there think this is okay. If I ever got attacked by a shark or killed by one I would NEVER EVER EEVVVVEERRR want people to go out and kill it. You take the risk by stepping into the ocean yet are mad when you come across and are attacked: that makes no sense. Someone at my work the other night said they do this to prevent people and children from being hurt or killed. To that I say: if you dont want to be hurt or killed DONT GO IN THE FUCKING OCEAN! So simple. But no you take the risk and need to take responsibility for that if something does happen. Human beings are so selfish and self centered. We think everything on this earth belongs to us when it doesnt. Sharks have been around much longer then people have and dont deserve to die bc some fucker decided to step into its home.

Honestly though, go for a dip in the ocean if it's worth life and limb to you, but remember, when you're in the jaws of the beast, only blame yourself. The shark didn't grow legs and walk into your habitat, you went into their habitat.

As a mainland English guy this is massive news to me, we always hear such good things over here about the Australian Government and the love of the Australian people for their wildlife. Is this cull still ongoing? I cant find anything past 2014 although i read it was going on a 3 year trial.

Culling sharks does nothing other than further damage an already damaged ecosystem. I thought this had stopped. When I was a child (now 71) growing up in Brownsville, Texas every time a shark attack occurred there was a cull. We’d go to the beach and every bubba with a boat was out shooting or setting off dynamite. Dead fish washed ashore by the hundreds. Thousands must have been killed. I was blessed with a father who taught me to love all creatures, even the less “pretty” ones including sharks. When the culling took place I begged him to make it stop. One of the few times I saw him cry. The other two times I’d sustained a severe burn and I had begged him to release a poor gear in tiny cage at a roadside attraction in Arizona. I’m crying for the sharks now.

I don't no how the local council governments work in the areas of the cull work , but these seem to me are the ones who are scared of losing there wealthy lifestyles if tourism is affected by a shark attack , it all boils down to money not the safety of swimmers, suffers etc ... Well done to the SEA SHEPHERD CREW keep up the good work , a heart breaking documentary but needed to be brought to the attention of the world ....

Australians should sign a petition and stop paying taxes if those go where people aren't happy with.

These actions are every bit as bad as the fining industry. Disgusting to think drum lines were the best solution a government could offer. Truly barbaric.

I wonder how many more sharks they brought into the area by giving them an easy food source of dead sharks on the bottom of the ocean...

    Suggestions:
This might be very dangerous, with baited lines in the water, but have a dive team with rebreathers on, go from bait hook to bait hook and take the bait off of each hook. Every once in a while, cut the line of the hook, making it look like the line got cut by the shark.
Another option would be to run a submarine drone to each hook, cutting each one off and collecting them and return them to your ship, undetected. Destroy the evidence, sinking the empty hooks.
People need to not swim or surf in shark infested waters.

This is horrendous. Australia is supposed to be the leaders to care for these animals. At least that is what I believed. I'm pretty sure the drumlines are banned now but I need to read up on it. our world needs sharks!

If we had a tally board for how many sharks kill people vs how many people kill sharks. It would be laughable to see the argument what the most dangerous creature on earth is. Live and let live.

Shark over fishing is due to the fin trades which are mostly in places like Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, China, S. Korea, etc. The very expensive shark fin tastes like plain noodle, or pasta. Sea Shepherd should use their resources to stop the fin TRADES, whale meat trades, etc. by political lobbying (the most powerful tool) and insert governmental pressure from UN. Sailing on ships and boats to harass the fishing vessels is romantic like pirates, but very inefficiently STUPID.
Also are those people dress up like seals to trespass the shark hunting areas, who are even more stupid.

so there you have it folks, sharks are the only carnivorous wild animal on earth that doesn't like the taste of human. Of course, with the exception of many full human consumptions.
