I appreciate Banks' expertise on the topic, his long years of experience in that field really shows. He just has a way of explaining very complex things in a simple manner, makes it very easy for a layman like myself to understand!

Teaching the kid right, cockpits, machine guns, cannons and bombs. Sounds like you are really enjoying being a father man and it makes me really happy to see that.
Phly, minor correction: that is NOT the Tallboy, just a 12,000 lb Blockbuster. It was used as a factory buster by the Dambusters as they were the only Squadron who could actually aim at and hit a specific building without hitting anything else. Also, RE your comment on seeing how much room there still was in the Lanc bomb bay with only the 8000 lb Blockbuster loaded: the 8000 pounders were regularly carried on ops, there would be one 8000 lb and the remainder of the bombload would be smaller GP bombs or incendiaries. Also, Banks is frigging adorable, BTW 😂
@@Volunteer-per-order_OSullivan indeed they did but that was later on in the war. Initially after the Dams Raid 617 was using the 12,000 lb High Capacity bomb to target factories and railway yards. After they got the Tallboys and Grand Slams later in the war they switched to targeting bridges, U Boat pens, and V1, V2, and V3 production and launch sites. 9 Squadron joined them later in the war after the crews had been able to be trained to use the super precise SABS gyroscopic bombsight and they got the more powerful versions of Lancaster that 617 was already using.
@@Niko_rj still 2200lb smaller than the grand slam. The MOAB AND FOAB are still lighter but their explosive yield is much greater but gaijin would have to bring in aircraft that can carry those special weapons

Having the 8,000 and 12,000 pounders added to the game is a definite plus. I completely agree that the 21,000 pound blockbuster is needed. Especially on maps where buildings & other structures can be destroyed for maximum satisfaction.
Hey little tip for everyone here, if your mouse stops controlling the plane like in 7:00, you can actually alt+tab out of War Thunder, then alt+tab back in, and it should fix the issue.
I think the thing is they can’t have that much smoke because it would make tank battles unplayable visually. But that’s why they do the sparks flying way out. I think it looks pretty good those things considered.
When the update rolls out, the first thing I’m going to do after unlocking those bombs is grab a cup of earl grey and hop into ground rb with the Lancaster in my lineup.
@@Al-.-ex You know what would be terrifying? Seeing a four-person squad on the enemy team all holding J at once in the kill feed, realizing they're all British tanks, then seeing four bombers approaching the battlefield and knowing what's coming.
I did some research, it looks like based on how the 12,000 bomb looks, it is not the Tallboy. The bomb in the game looks identical to the 12,000 HC "Cookie" bomb. The tallboy was a scaled down version of the Grand Slam and had a pointy cone. It was designed to penetrate submarine dens and bunkers. It's so sweet that you're on baby duty while recording. Finally we'll have Tallboy. I'd love Grand Slam too, but let's face it, that's too big. The RAF had to strip the Lancaster B.I of the dorsal turret and bomb bay doors just to fit Grand Slam and be below MTOW. You could see the wings sagging, the weight of the bomb making the wings bow and the fuselage sag down, and when the bomb dropped and that stress was released the fuselage would physically jump up a few feet in the air from the wings springing back to straight. I've actually seen Tallboy and Grand Slam IRL at the BBMF museum at RAF Coningsby, they're big. But unlike the model of Tallboy in War Thunder, the one at Coningsby had a teardrop shape nose rather than a blunt nose. The nose was mostly solid steel to help give it some mass to dig into the ground on impact. I really want Gaijin to allow us to kinetic kill tanks with this thing, just dropping 12000lbs of bomb and beaning a tank, it should probably overpen and go straight through the tank into the dirt.

Three 4,000lb High Capacity bomb units and a tail unit makes a 12,000lb High Capacity bomb as seen in this vid. The 'blockbuster' was a US name given to all large bombs developed by the US before WWII, usually 500lb or 1,000lb bombs. The US also used a larger 2,000lb cased bomb, and more modern streamlined bombs (post-WWII) of large size still sometimes get called blockbusters. The 'earthquake' bombs were the 12,00lb 'Tallboy' and the 22,000lb 'Grand Slam', which were intended to fall at great speed, penetrate the earth and explode underground near large reinforced targets such as mines, V-weapon bunkers, viaducts, U-Boat pens, and so on, destroying them with disturbances of the earth and shock waves. Similar US bombs to those can be found under the designation AZON and TARZON guided bombs, mostly used during the Korean War.
