Just listened and was nearly brought to tears with hearing the recognition from both the speakers of how traumatic and truthfully disabling chronic back pain is. Hearing it spoken about as a genuine disability is so comforting. I refer to myself as being disabled and with limitations to what I can due to my degenerated back and people don't often realise or appreciate how disabling living with it really is. Thank you both for this episode! It has given me hope hearing the emotional journey of living with chronic pain being expressed so clearly.
This guy saved my life! I'm 48 now but when I was 41 I injured my back, over time, the pain started getting worse and I then started to worry about it which was the worst thing I could do. I went through over 2 years of chronic, daily back pain and started getting suicidal thoughts. My consultant told me to enjoy the good days and forget the bad, the problem was, I didn't have many good days so I decided to research pain and specifically, back pain. I stumbled across this man's research and I am now completely pain free again

yes!!! Exactlywhati experienced. I am a professional skier and sailor. . And I was made to be afraid of any movement byPTs and docs - even a year post injury!!! I'm an exact example of disability induced by healthcare. Fear is, a powerful inhibitor along with misinformation

I got lower back pain from sitting down long hours in front of a laptop. Nearly three months in bed. I thoght I was dying. But then I remember meeting and talking to a young man that could barely walk. I asked him if it was the result of any accident. He said that it was from working long hours in front of a computer. I understood that sitting down or staying in the same position for many hours make your muscles and tendons shorter and that is very painful condition. We have to change position many times while working in a computer. Now I transformed a cheap shelf in a computer table. I work most of the day standing up!
Great interview. Unfortunately, since pain can be attributed to so much more than tissue damage, it’s not one size fits all. Inflammation is a contributor to so many disease states. When consciously controlling your mind and not catastrophizing, you are calming the nervous system. I believe that most of us live in fight or flight. We have so much stimulation (our phone, our lifestyles, our desire to own more material things, etc). We also are being poisoned 24/7. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the toxic foods we eat, and the fear based news we listen to. It’s all a recipe for chronic disease and or pain states. I do believe that the brain is capable of doing some amazing things. But it’s hard work. It’s a mind and body approach. People like Wim Hoff have become so popular because we have literally forgotten how to breathe. We breathe as if we are being chased by lions. I have chronic pain everday day (mostly low back) and it’s a daily struggle to overcome it. I pray that others find peace. I pray that someday I find peace.
You get peace with deep breathing. Need to do it mindfully. Need to train your mind to sit quietly, close your eyes, and breathe. Deep breathing in and deep breath out. When you master it without running your mind here and there, your mind gets cleaned with other thoughts. This helps to have peace and pain free.
You have lost it as a species if you have to breath consciously. It is an involuntary action and probably the problem is elsewhere that's causing your breathing issue. Fixing the breath is a bandaid, not a solution
That was so enlightening, Thank you very much for that. I suffer with back pain on and off, I have been told to lift with the knees, hold the core tight etc etc etc... Often I stop and make myself take a few deep breaths and just relax a bit more. Letting go of tension is possibly one of the hardest things. thank you so much for these 2 hours, it took me a week week to watch it all a bit at the time as I relax on my sofa crocheting... What a fascinating talk! I am particularly intrigued how emotions affect our pain in our bodies. I know I realised this was going on with me earlier this year. How to tackle those issues is key. Thank you for having Peter O'Sullivan on.
I'm an old man now, and I've suffered lots of pain and trauma. But severe back pain is the worst of all because if effects every aspect of your health and well-being, especially when you get my age. So always be careful when you lift anything heavy and always take care of it. "An ounce of pervention is worth a pound of cure."
Thank you Dr Rangan and your guest, I appreciated this information. I live with regular tremendous stress and it definitely affects my pain. I have a chronic condition but I refuse to give in to the fear and any catastrophe thinking. So I have kept moving regardless. My right knee has been buckling of late however, but I do strengthening exercises which permits me to keep moving. Rest and relaxing the body is very important as well as deep breathing techniques as you both mention. But addressing sources of trauma and emotional pain is also crucial as this doctor explains. The mind body connection is a real factor involved in our suffering.
When I had very painful sciatica years ago I stumbled upon John E Sarno’s book - Healing Back Pain. A fairly quick read and by the time I finished my pain had halved. It gave me a different way of thinking. I have also thought about Africans bending in the fields while we are taught not to do that.
All these new theories are based on the great Dr Sarnos books . Healing back pain ; Mind and Body . Dr Sarno laid the foundation for the connections between emotional stress and body pain . Everyone else is building on his theories
I wish!!!! Been here for 10 WEEKS 😭😭😭 THIS IS TORTURE. That book did nothing. Even the journaling. I am only 39. My life changed over night. I've lost everything I love... Bending in the fields......girl, this is how I am certain I gained my 7 bulging discs.
I was told that I had osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease in my 20's and I've been in pain ever since 😢 I've turned 40 this year and I've near heard this from any doctor before this video! I actually feel so depressed that in my 20's I could have lived a different life than this instead of being afraid all the time of hurting my spine! I literally actually have no words to explain how I feel right now after hearing this!!! 😢
I struggle with the same still in my 20’s but could’ve had a much better life without various health issues. I think I’ve become more jaded to it atp & look forward to making the most out of my life going forward. I’d recommend giving your best towards living an awesome life now (including not sulking about the past), and let the cards fall where they may🤷♂️ I follow a 50 y/o in his 2nd year of medical school; who knows where life could take you.
Vague pain in the legs started building for a year, then 3 months of disabling , excruciating pain like electric shocks with the slightest movement. I couldn't sit , had to lie down in back of car, couldn't do anything. Several gp visits, 2 a& e visits, mri scan ( nobody spotted the problem)musculoskeletal skeletal team apt, several courses of different meds with terrible side effects. Went private, surgeon spotted synovial cyst on sciatic nerve roots...operation....free from pain next day.
What a fabulous success story of persistence and finding the right person who knew the cause and the ability to fix it. 'Out of pain the next day' sounds almost miraculous. So glad for you!
@@thelaceygirl Hi. He asked me to bring the visual image of the MRI scan with me, not the written diagnosis. I had a copy of the written version but not the visual, however, it was accessible through any NHS portal and as the surgeon worked in both sectors he was able to view all the images. When he looked at the visual images he could see the white blob on the nerve roots. I had never even heard of this type of cyst before and I was in so much pain I didn't think I could put up with it much longer. I couldn't sit at all, I ate standing up or lay down. I hope you are not in such pain!

Definitely have a problem with this mentality. And heard it from a PT awhile back. The thought that “you can do anything…the pain is just in your head.” After my body becomes immobile after particular exercises because my pelvic bone is rotated and nerves are compressing all the way up through my neck from misalignment there. When you become unable to move…no matter how much you want to, it doesn’t matter what this guy or the PT I had says as far as…”you shouldn’t feel so guarded” and essentially you should just DO what your body is not allowing you to do. Whether you agree with imaging or not or simply believe it’s only people who have a bone break or something that would make them “unable to do the exercises/activities, that does not change the reality of PAIN and what it does and does not allow one to do, unfortunately.
Listening to him made me wonder if there are utubes on how to listen. He has an annoying habit of talking ( yeahyeahyeah) while Dr Chatterlee was talking.
In summary: If you have chronic pain the last thing you should do is see a doctor or other "expert" about it. Instead you should return to your regular activity as soon as possible and trust that your body will feel less pain over time.
@@vickiswinehart8675 Put weight on your leg anyway doing everything you used to do. It will be painful for the first few minutes, then once it's warmed up, the pain will lessen or go away. Go through the pain in this way so that your brain learns that you in fact are not injured anymore and you can do everything the way you did before your injury. After doing this many times your brain will learn that activity is once again good for your body. When your brain learns this through repetition, the pain will become less and less until you eventually forget about it completely. You need to train your brain to accept that you are no longer injured and there is no need for pain signals anymore. Instead of avoiding painful activity think of that painful activity as a "warmup" for your future activity which will gradually become less and less painful as you get stronger by continuing activity you used to do.
I am not surprised people lose hope, as most medical people I have come across are not interested just hand pain killers and that is it the treatment. You have to just accept it as the help is not there.

Hi Rangan, really great info. I paid for a private MRI after few years of back pain in April my back just went. I couldn’t move, get dressed or go to work. That did subside but I was filled with fear about moving again and had constant pain. My MRI showed annular tear and disc bulge but I was very lucky to see someone who said movement is the elixir for your back it’s how it gets its nutrients! So move, bend and walk at pace so you’re using all parts of the body. And you will recover totally it just takes time. I no longer live in fear (so the MRI for me set me free) and every time I move (even if I get a back twinge) I think this is good! 😊 thank you for your wonderful guests and bringing us such vital information.
I’m a physiotherapist and ofc i was supposed to know what to do to fix my knee/meniscus problem, since “meniscus doesn’t just repair itself”, and we can only take it out resulting in instability. Didn’t want that. 2 years and no change. I angry fit of desperation i decided to now eat only long boiled broths until my knee doesn’t hurt anymore. It took maybe 2,5 months. Now for many reasons i dis carnivore and it did heal me. I can’t believe how stupid we are!
Not sure if Peter wanted to say more when he frequently used words like "100%", "Yeah", "Exactly" or if he was merely acknowledging Dr.Rangan... I felt that kind of intercepted in a few places. Nevertheless, it was a fantastic conversation ."Hope" is the key message. I also feel the importance of correct/functional breathing in the overall scheme of things including relief from muscle pain. Posture plays an important role in correct breathing. When we try to hide our tummies, we open up to a variety of health (both Physical and mental) issues including muscular issues, which I have been suffering from. Relaxed posture and correct breathing, along with mindset (telling myself that I am fit and healthy) are a panacea, I would say, as I see drastic improvements in myself. Not to undermine the importance of quality stretching as in Yoga. Thank you Dr. Rangan and Peter.

Im sick of people suffering with pain and side effects of medication due to misdiagnosis and misinformation. Ive had chronic pain myself , its horrendous, no one should have to suffer from it
In 2006, I hurt my neck reaching into the fridge. My career was running me into the ground, I had just been assigned a massive project, and then my husband’s retina retina detached spontaneously. My GP at the time, told me to sit tight lest I cause further damage, prescribed benzodiazepines and painkillers and wait for an MRI. The herniation between c4 and c5 would be risky to operate on, according to the neurosurgeon I saw 7 months later. It resolved eventually, but I’ve been living with chronic pain ever since. Central pain sensitization, fibromyalgia, and CFS. I wish this video existed back then. Thank you for the eye opener.

Ok BUT my MRI showed 7 bulging discs and I've had three Drs tell me it's not the cause of pain and it's a Neuro disease and see a neurologist. Super helpful and empowering 🙄 if there is not hope for getting out of level 9/10 pain after 10 weeks, I don't want to be here
@@AG-nn8lp there's always hope. I can say that all my acute (non-chronic) pain always improved. We just have to not panic. I learned this over many years. IMHO, you should definitely see a neurologist so you can find out exactly what's going on.
Chronic back pain causes: #1 is too much sitting. Get a stand-up desk, or sit on a large ball instead of an outdated chair. Start STRETCHING. Motion is lotion. If you have a job that forces you to sit down for long periods of time, you may need to make big changes. There are ways to feel better but you will have to make changes in your life. There is no quick fix pill. Blessings. 💝
Thanks. Helpful conversation. However, my partner has been living with chronic neuropathic pain - postherpetic neuralgia in T1-T3 - for almost 3 years. The impact on his quality of life is really severe and he can barely get out. Pain dominates both our lives and treatment options have just about run out. For a guy who was active and all about playing sports - even in his 60s - his confidence is completely shot! He’d lived well with episodes of acute back pain on and off for many years, so we keeping hoping…… Wondering if you could do a similar conversation about neuropathic pain too?
@@lauraginesi4230 as far as I know, when they felt like they were getting shingles pain again, they would rub thyme essential oil on each side of their spine about the level of where the shingles outbreak occurred.
In the beginning back pain is compared with an ankle, that you can always offload one. No you can't if you want to walk pain free. I have problems with foot pain. It hinders my ability to work because I can't walk on one foot. Sure I can jump around on my other foot but for how long before you hurt the other foot aswell.
I agree. I’m mid 60’s & I hurt my left knee in 2018 which impacted my walking & my right knee was trying to compensate so that one then started becoming an issue. From that my back was then taking more strain so then my back was an issue! Six years on I still have issues with all those areas so obviously now chronic pain. I’m just starting to learn about the brain connection & trying to teach it that I’m not in danger but it’s not that easy. My GP who I haven’t seen now since before lockdown was suggesting it was psychosomatic & that anti depressants might help. I politely declined. The pain/discomfort is real and I now understand there’s a real brain connection and that other issues in my life are probably keeping the loop going but it’s not all in my head! GP’s have 10 minutes max. They can’t take a proper history & anyway most don’t address things like sleep, stress, diet etc & physios don’t talk about those things either, even private ones. It’s good to hear all these myths dispelled but I don’t find change that easy!
I have lower back pain, and it can stop me from walking a few yards. It makes the muscles around my hip go into spasms. Permanent pain in my right ankle even though there is nothing wrong with my ankle or hip. Thigh muscles are going as hard as rock and very painful. All caused by compressed nerves in the lower back.
I work my ass off, very physical work, which was dumped on a 2 guys of a 12-14 man team. Sprained my ankle. While resting the severe sprain, work related, 5-6 weeks in. Ankle started to hurt again a lot. And swelled. I ended up having an infection in the ankle joint. I have spent my late spring home. And my summer in hospital and then rehab. And soon another surgery, with 1-2 wks more of rehab. Hopefully. But it also involves food we eat, but work also not knowing that the body needs breaks on muscle groups daily
I;ve had episodes of severe lumbar disc pain and immobility, and each one has been at the same time as moving, job insecurity or change, moving to a different area etc Even if the changes were those I wanted, I know I don't do well with changes and uncertainty. They were very difficult and painful, but self-limiting.
Ditto! Me too… ❤ bug life changes and emotional turmoil really bring on the back pain…. Making self care a priority is so difficult when life is unstable, but a fight I’m still trying to win!
Interesting podcast & good to hear all those myths being dispelled. I would take issue however with the ankle analogy. Yes we have 2 ankles or knees, hips or whatever but if one is injured the other tries to compensate which can then have a knock on effect on the other ankle or whatever it is, which in turn can impact on the back etc. I know this from experience of injuring one knee, then the other knee became an issue, then my lower back so it’s all connected. I was recently listening to a very interesting podcast (Doc Malik) with Dr Simon King who has nearly 40 years of experience saying that some cases of back pain are related to kidney problems. I hadn’t heard that before. And also the negative role that metal in the body, such as piercings & fillings can have in back pain. Super interesting.
Since we don't have the proper nutrients in our food sources any longer, there will always be issues because our bodies are weakened. Pain is at the top of the list. I've suffered with back pain, among other types, for years. Today, I consume the nutrients that we are missing, 19 months now, and I am healing, having less pain! It's simple and affordable. I'm 61 and feel like I'm in my mid-30s! All the research in the world will end with the only true help that will come when we start using God's supplies AGAIN! I'm doing it and proving it!

I've had neck pain, nerve pain and shoulder pain everyday for seven years now, I saw one of the uk's top doctors, she has been mentioned in newspaper articles and news outlets as being the top doctor in her field, she said if she had my condition she would just walk it off, and it's just the way god made me 😂, its a joke how someone so high up doesn't think of pain being different for each individual and thinks she could cope with anyones pain, ive talked to others in similar situations and it seems that they are being failed by this view, things like the pain scale set this wrong view that someone's pain can be interpreted by another so easily
I have had lower back,pain for over 20:years. All l get is pain killers (Tramadol). I now have been diagnosed with cancer. I have other health problems. How much more do l have to tolerate before l take drastic action?
I am holding space with you right now. I had diagnoses of Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) in 2013 and a chest-wall recurrence in 2016. A highly, rare, disfiguring head cancer in 2014 requiring a huge skin graft from my left thigh to close the wound once the tumor was removed. I am absolutely not complaining. I was bedridden for 8 years. I was in excruciating pain for 5 years. I was beside myself, how could I get out of this. Life had zero quality. I was miserable beyond compare. Longest story short, Ketamine 120mg sub lingual per day in divided doses of 15-30mg at a time, Pregabalin titrated up to 75mg’s three times a day, duloxetine 60mg’s three times a day, and compounded LDN 9mg in am and 3mg at bedtime. I am now able to be up and about for 6-7 hours at a time. This is what worked for me This is not medical advise, always consult your healthcare providers before starting an RX medication regimen. Most importantly, I completely overhauled my diet 360 degrees. As little added sugar as possible. Keto, fresh low-starch vegetables, moderate fresh fruit intake per day. Best to you. Thirty minutes in and it’s good but I don’t see it very helpful for me. I’m 60 now had my first back surgery at 27 only two bulged discs but I was unable to stand at the time to load my printers at work, I did it on my hands & knees. I’ve had moderate to severe all my adult life, no injury. At this stage of my life it’s my attitude. The glass is still half full. My back does feel better when I get a 20 minute walk. I still love to dance and will every chance I get.
After listening to this I started bending and rounding with my back and I herniated a disk in my lower back which is now giving me bad sciatica. I think this information should have been presented with a little more caution.

The pain is in my FEET, and tailbone.....I had numbness in my butt cheek. 7 bulging discs and said it's not the cause and to see a neurologist. 😭 10 weeks of debilitating pain I feel I'll never get out of.
Yes, the pain became acute when it involved the nerve roots but, the other deep but vague pain I had from the start of the same year ( 9 months). Although I know some poor souls have it for years, so i suppose mine wasn't cronic.

Osteo arthritis, my back, neck, hips, knees. Pain 24/7. I do not have a life, as it only consist of pain. On top of that I am on Warfarin so I can only take useless paracetamol for the pain.

If it's ok, take all sorts of hea lth supplements, also vegan omega 3 such as flaxseed oil, and stop animal protein, and rely on plant protein supplements, also cereals, sprouts.. Problem is mostly in the digestion
I'm 45, suffered with lower back pain since mid 20's. Started off with an injury but then would get annual flareups which would result the whole right side of my back going into spasm. Now in my 40's, the annual flareups are monthly but not a 10/10 but like 6/10. It disrupts my daily activities, sitting, standing, driving, socialising and causes anxiety. Read Dr Sarno, Alan Gordon, gained an understanding of neuroplastic pain and over the last 9 months with somatic tracking, I'm able to reduce flareups from 9/10 down to a 3/10. However, since starting the somatic tracking in January, it seemed to unlock more flareups but less intense. Is this part of the healing process? I'm trying to eliminate it completely. I can now link a lot of my lower back pain to my emotions such as stress, my back is my stress barometer!
True! Keep moving (gradual strengthening), but technically you have chronic pain (if youve had pain for more than 3 months), you can follow any of the advice given for chronic pain management too
Thank you so much this was very educational for me I had a very hard year was diagnosed with herniated discs was told wrong advice I went nine whole months without bendi or twisting my spine because of fear I was told to constantly engage my core this all was a nightmare for me my back was constantly spasm very tight burning painful for 1 year I finally saw Doctor that told me to start stretching and moving my spine because it was okay to do so I'm starting to get a little bit more flexible again but it's still tight and goes into spasms a little bit now I know never to embrace the core except for when I do my ab work thank you so much for this video I'm praying that my back will go back to normal again does anybody have any tips how to relieve tight muscles in the back what I can do??
Migraines are dismissed as debilitating. My daughter in her 40’s has suffered from chronic migraines for 20 years with no support from the medical community.
That’s all relevant to the size of the person though. The world’s strongest men have huge backs. But they also have huge everything else too, so it’s relative and generally they are considered less healthy than a smaller person who has maybe more body fat percentage. Cos big/taller people die earlier regardless of muscle cos they gotta pump blood round the body more
Chronic pain is Hell on Earth. I’ve had Chronic Dry Eye Disease for 2 years. Not only is the disease painful, it’s life altering and doesn’t get treated the same as other diseases.
Can I ask if you know what is causing the dry eyes? I have the same problem along with photosensitivity which started first. Sjorgrens syndrome has been mentioned but no diagnosis. Eye drops do not work, I put them in and I swear the heat in my eyes boils the drops. It's miserable and getting worse.

Education in how to use your body cannot start early enough As with how one exercises and what one puts in the body Scans ASAP after the injury are crucial, along with a proper assessment Once the back has been damaged the weakness will always be there Hence the precautionary body movements Exercise and diet are most crucial in preventing further episodes Back problems are physical problems that occur due to ignorance of knowing how to manage one's body correctly, along with physical abnormalities such as stenosis, a short leg, extra vertebrae, and muscle issues like extra large piriformis muscles Cheers
Chronic pain and symptoms are all due to repressed and surpressed emotions ! Humans are psychological and emotional in origin. Mind and body !!! Your thoughts literally create everything. What do you mentally rehearse everyday!??? The human race is conditioned and is addicted to thinking!! Especially negative thinking. These are programs and paradigms Chronic pain and symptoms and being a victim mentality individual will absolutely make you suffer symptoms and emotional pain 90% or more just sweep all these emotions and energy under the carpet and throw on some ego identity masks and try and play out characters that they are not The ego has to hide all the pain and does so in the form of pain and symptoms. Having the nutrition, (fuel) for the human body to function properly, all the organs functioning in unison, also affects the emotions, even a person's will to live, their thought processing, the body being able to protect itself with it's health, and for many like me, it causes healing. Chemicals corrupt the proper function of the body and brain power. Plus, too many consider normal human emotions as medical conditions. So there's that.... I take certified organic nutrients, the only affordable ones that are the best, and my life is changed from miserable to so very enjoyable. For 19 months now, I'm doing it and proving it!
No one is selling hope. Hope is a choice. If you don't have hope, then you won't believe the solutions will work... So you won't try. Hope is the first step. The second step is to diversify all the inputs in your life, with a bias toward nature. That means you should diversify everything that your 5 senses detect. Diversify your nutrition with whole foods. Diversify what you listen to and watch, both information, entertainment, and nature itself. Diversify the things you touch and feel as well. Literally _touch grass._ Get dirty. Breathe in pollen. And in addition to all that, you must exercise. I find the best way to tick several of those boxes at once is to find a few friends and/or a few strangers, and then go hike in a national park or grow some food in a community garden with them.
Brillant podcast, especially about the 10th myth - most medical interventions for chronic low back pain - spinal injections and surgery - are value interventions. Buyer beware.
When they talked about lifting they were talking about lifting everyday objects that common people would do, not heavy deadlifting in the gym. Continue doing that with proper form! 🎉
What about chronic upper back pain which I have, damaged discs in my neck pressing down on my nerves, got it in my late 60s after years of tight shoulders and poor posture due to stress from a narcissist mother.
So many expect too much from doctors. Sometimes there is no answer. You can manage things with medication, or surgery, but there really is no other solution. Pseudoscience gives you something to do, but it often comes down to the body adjusting, or healing itself.
Just listened and was nearly brought to tears with hearing the recognition from both the speakers of how traumatic and truthfully disabling chronic back pain is. Hearing it spoken about as a genuine disability is so comforting. I refer to myself as being disabled and with limitations to what I can due to my degenerated back and people don't often realise or appreciate how disabling living with it really is.
Thank you both for this episode! It has given me hope hearing the emotional journey of living with chronic pain being expressed so clearly.

I'm 48 now but when I was 41 I injured my back, over time, the pain started getting worse and I then started to worry about it which was the worst thing I could do. I went through over 2 years of chronic, daily back pain and started getting suicidal thoughts.
My consultant told me to enjoy the good days and forget the bad, the problem was, I didn't have many good days so I decided to research pain and specifically, back pain. I stumbled across this man's research and I am now completely pain free again

I got lower back pain from sitting down long hours in front of a laptop. Nearly three months in bed. I thoght I was dying.
But then I remember meeting and talking to a young man that could barely walk. I asked him if it was the result of any accident. He said that it was from working long hours in front of a computer.
I understood that sitting down or staying in the same position for many hours make your muscles and tendons shorter and that is very painful condition.
We have to change position many times while working in a computer. Now I transformed a cheap shelf in a computer table. I work most of the day standing up!
Great interview. Unfortunately, since pain can be attributed to so much more than tissue damage, it’s not one size fits all. Inflammation is a contributor to so many disease states. When consciously controlling your mind and not catastrophizing, you are calming the nervous system. I believe that most of us live in fight or flight. We have so much stimulation (our phone, our lifestyles, our desire to own more material things, etc). We also are being poisoned 24/7. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the toxic foods we eat, and the fear based news we listen to. It’s all a recipe for chronic disease and or pain states. I do believe that the brain is capable of doing some amazing things. But it’s hard work. It’s a mind and body approach. People like Wim Hoff have become so popular because we have literally forgotten how to breathe. We breathe as if we are being chased by lions. I have chronic pain everday day (mostly low back) and it’s a daily struggle to overcome it. I pray that others find peace. I pray that someday I find peace.
You get peace with deep breathing. Need to do it mindfully. Need to train your mind to sit quietly, close your eyes, and breathe. Deep breathing in and deep breath out.
When you master it without running your mind here and there, your mind gets cleaned with other thoughts. This helps to have peace and pain free.
You have lost it as a species if you have to breath consciously. It is an involuntary action and probably the problem is elsewhere that's causing your breathing issue. Fixing the breath is a bandaid, not a solution

I'm an old man now, and I've suffered lots of pain and trauma. But severe back pain is the worst of all because if effects every aspect of your health and well-being, especially when you get my age. So always be careful when you lift anything heavy and always take care of it. "An ounce of pervention is worth a pound of cure."

Thank you Dr Rangan and your guest, I appreciated this information. I live with regular tremendous stress and it definitely affects my pain. I have a chronic condition but I refuse to give in to the fear and any catastrophe thinking. So I have kept moving regardless. My right knee has been buckling of late however, but I do strengthening exercises which permits me to keep moving. Rest and relaxing the body is very important as well as deep breathing techniques as you both mention. But addressing sources of trauma and emotional pain is also crucial as this doctor explains. The mind body connection is a real factor involved in our suffering.
When I had very painful sciatica years ago I stumbled upon John E Sarno’s book - Healing Back Pain. A fairly quick read and by the time I finished my pain had halved. It gave me a different way of thinking. I have also thought about Africans bending in the fields while we are taught not to do that.

All these new theories are based on the great Dr Sarnos books . Healing back pain ; Mind and Body . Dr Sarno laid the foundation for the connections between emotional stress and body pain . Everyone else is building on his theories

I was told that I had osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease in my 20's and I've been in pain ever since 😢 I've turned 40 this year and I've near heard this from any doctor before this video! I actually feel so depressed that in my 20's I could have lived a different life than this instead of being afraid all the time of hurting my spine! I literally actually have no words to explain how I feel right now after hearing this!!! 😢
I struggle with the same still in my 20’s but could’ve had a much better life without various health issues. I think I’ve become more jaded to it atp & look forward to making the most out of my life going forward. I’d recommend giving your best towards living an awesome life now (including not sulking about the past), and let the cards fall where they may🤷♂️ I follow a 50 y/o in his 2nd year of medical school; who knows where life could take you.
Vague pain in the legs started building for a year, then 3 months of disabling , excruciating pain like electric shocks with the slightest movement. I couldn't sit , had to lie down in back of car, couldn't do anything. Several gp visits, 2 a& e visits, mri scan ( nobody spotted the problem)musculoskeletal skeletal team apt, several courses of different meds with terrible side effects.
Went private, surgeon spotted synovial cyst on sciatic nerve roots...operation....free from pain next day.
That's great, but thats not chronic pain that this video is about.
What a fabulous success story of persistence and finding the right person who knew the cause and the ability to fix it. 'Out of pain the next day' sounds almost miraculous. So glad for you!
Do you know what test he ordered to find this? Did you have pain with sitting as well in your pelvis?
@@thelaceygirl Hi. He asked me to bring the visual image of the MRI scan with me, not the written diagnosis. I had a copy of the written version but not the visual, however, it was accessible through any NHS portal and as the surgeon worked in both sectors he was able to view all the images. When he looked at the visual images he could see the white blob on the nerve roots. I had never even heard of this type of cyst before and I was in so much pain I didn't think I could put up with it much longer. I couldn't sit at all, I ate standing up or lay down. I hope you are not in such pain!

It’s not that simple. We do until we can’t. You end up on the floor. Compassion will help.
Definitely have a problem with this mentality. And heard it from a PT awhile back. The thought that “you can do anything…the pain is just in your head.” After my body becomes immobile after particular exercises because my pelvic bone is rotated and nerves are compressing all the way up through my neck from misalignment there. When you become unable to move…no matter how much you want to, it doesn’t matter what this guy or the PT I had says as far as…”you shouldn’t feel so guarded” and essentially you should just DO what your body is not allowing you to do. Whether you agree with imaging or not or simply believe it’s only people who have a bone break or something that would make them “unable to do the exercises/activities, that does not change the reality of PAIN and what it does and does not allow one to do, unfortunately.

In summary:
If you have chronic pain the last thing you should do is see a doctor or other "expert" about it.
Instead you should return to your regular activity as soon as possible and trust that your body will feel less pain over time.
Sounds great but if you can't put any weight on your leg it is impossible.

@@vickiswinehart8675 Put weight on your leg anyway doing everything you used to do. It will be painful for the first few minutes, then once it's warmed up, the pain will lessen or go away. Go through the pain in this way so that your brain learns that you in fact are not injured anymore and you can do everything the way you did before your injury. After doing this many times your brain will learn that activity is once again good for your body. When your brain learns this through repetition, the pain will become less and less until you eventually forget about it completely. You need to train your brain to accept that you are no longer injured and there is no need for pain signals anymore. Instead of avoiding painful activity think of that painful activity as a "warmup" for your future activity which will gradually become less and less painful as you get stronger by continuing activity you used to do.
Correct it's sad there is no help for this miserable pain.

I am not surprised people lose hope, as most medical people I have come across are not interested just hand pain killers and that is it the treatment. You have to just accept it as the help is not there.

Hi Rangan, really great info. I paid for a private MRI after few years of back pain in April my back just went. I couldn’t move, get dressed or go to work. That did subside but I was filled with fear about moving again and had constant pain. My MRI showed annular tear and disc bulge but I was very lucky to see someone who said movement is the elixir for your back it’s how it gets its nutrients! So move, bend and walk at pace so you’re using all parts of the body. And you will recover totally it just takes time. I no longer live in fear (so the MRI for me set me free) and every time I move (even if I get a back twinge) I think this is good! 😊 thank you for your wonderful guests and bringing us such vital information.
I’m a physiotherapist and ofc i was supposed to know what to do to fix my knee/meniscus problem, since “meniscus doesn’t just repair itself”, and we can only take it out resulting in instability. Didn’t want that. 2 years and no change. I angry fit of desperation i decided to now eat only long boiled broths until my knee doesn’t hurt anymore. It took maybe 2,5 months. Now for many reasons i dis carnivore and it did heal me. I can’t believe how stupid we are!
Not sure if Peter wanted to say more when he frequently used words like "100%", "Yeah", "Exactly" or if he was merely acknowledging Dr.Rangan... I felt that kind of intercepted in a few places.
Nevertheless, it was a fantastic conversation ."Hope" is the key message. I also feel the importance of correct/functional breathing in the overall scheme of things including relief from muscle pain. Posture plays an important role in correct breathing. When we try to hide our tummies, we open up to a variety of health (both Physical and mental) issues including muscular issues, which I have been suffering from. Relaxed posture and correct breathing, along with mindset (telling myself that I am fit and healthy) are a panacea, I would say, as I see drastic improvements in myself. Not to undermine the importance of quality stretching as in Yoga.

Im so passionate about this topic, ive made a video on the top 4 books for chronic pain management. The drive behind me making this when im meant to be off on maternity leave? Im sick of people suffering with pain and side effects of medication due to misdiagnosis and misinformation. Ive had chronic pain myself , its horrendous, no one should have to suffer from it
In 2006, I hurt my neck reaching into the fridge. My career was running me into the ground, I had just been assigned a massive project, and then my husband’s retina retina detached spontaneously. My GP at the time, told me to sit tight lest I cause further damage, prescribed benzodiazepines and painkillers and wait for an MRI. The herniation between c4 and c5 would be risky to operate on, according to the neurosurgeon I saw 7 months later. It resolved eventually, but I’ve been living with chronic pain ever since. Central pain sensitization, fibromyalgia, and CFS.
I wish this video existed back then. Thank you for the eye opener.

Ok BUT my MRI showed 7 bulging discs and I've had three Drs tell me it's not the cause of pain and it's a Neuro disease and see a neurologist. Super helpful and empowering 🙄 if there is not hope for getting out of level 9/10 pain after 10 weeks, I don't want to be here
@@AG-nn8lp there's always hope. I can say that all my acute (non-chronic) pain always improved. We just have to not panic. I learned this over many years. IMHO, you should definitely see a neurologist so you can find out exactly what's going on.

Chronic back pain causes: #1 is too much sitting. Get a stand-up desk, or sit on a large ball instead of an outdated chair. Start STRETCHING. Motion is lotion. If you have a job that forces you to sit down for long periods of time, you may need to make big changes. There are ways to feel better but you will have to make changes in your life. There is no quick fix pill.

However, my partner has been living with chronic neuropathic pain - postherpetic neuralgia in T1-T3 - for almost 3 years. The impact on his quality of life is really severe and he can barely get out. Pain dominates both our lives and treatment options have just about run out. For a guy who was active and all about playing sports - even in his 60s - his confidence is completely shot! He’d lived well with episodes of acute back pain on and off for many years, so we keeping hoping……
Wondering if you could do a similar conversation about neuropathic pain too?
Someone told me they use the essential oil “ thyme” for this type of pain with good results.

@@lauraginesi4230 as far as I know, when they felt like they were getting shingles pain again, they would rub thyme essential oil on each side of their spine about the level of where the shingles outbreak occurred.

In the beginning back pain is compared with an ankle, that you can always offload one. No you can't if you want to walk pain free. I have problems with foot pain. It hinders my ability to work because I can't walk on one foot. Sure I can jump around on my other foot but for how long before you hurt the other foot aswell.

I agree. I’m mid 60’s & I hurt my left knee in 2018 which impacted my walking & my right knee was trying to compensate so that one then started becoming an issue. From that my back was then taking more strain so then my back was an issue! Six years on I still have issues with all those areas so obviously now chronic pain. I’m just starting to learn about the brain connection & trying to teach it that I’m not in danger but it’s not that easy. My GP who I haven’t seen now since before lockdown was suggesting it was psychosomatic & that anti depressants might help. I politely declined. The pain/discomfort is real and I now understand there’s a real brain connection and that other issues in my life are probably keeping the loop going but it’s not all in my head! GP’s have 10 minutes max. They can’t take a proper history & anyway most don’t address things like sleep, stress, diet etc & physios don’t talk about those things either, even private ones. It’s good to hear all these myths dispelled but I don’t find change that easy!

What about thigh pain?
I have lower back pain, and it can stop me from walking a few yards. It makes the muscles around my hip go into spasms. Permanent pain in my right ankle even though there is nothing wrong with my ankle or hip. Thigh muscles are going as hard as rock and very painful. All caused by compressed nerves in the lower back.
Fighting to regain. And was only told by a fellow athlete how I was NOT moving right
I work my ass off, very physical work, which was dumped on a 2 guys of a 12-14 man team. Sprained my ankle. While resting the severe sprain, work related, 5-6 weeks in. Ankle started to hurt again a lot. And swelled. I ended up having an infection in the ankle joint. I have spent my late spring home. And my summer in hospital and then rehab. And soon another surgery, with 1-2 wks more of rehab. Hopefully. But it also involves food we eat, but work also not knowing that the body needs breaks on muscle groups daily
I;ve had episodes of severe lumbar disc pain and immobility, and each one has been at the same time as moving, job insecurity or change, moving to a different area etc Even if the changes were those I wanted, I know I don't do well with changes and uncertainty. They were very difficult and painful, but self-limiting.
Ditto! Me too… ❤ bug life changes and emotional turmoil really bring on the back pain…. Making self care a priority is so difficult when life is unstable, but a fight I’m still trying to win!

Interesting podcast & good to hear all those myths being dispelled. I would take issue however with the ankle analogy. Yes we have 2 ankles or knees, hips or whatever but if one is injured the other tries to compensate which can then have a knock on effect on the other ankle or whatever it is, which in turn can impact on the back etc. I know this from experience of injuring one knee, then the other knee became an issue, then my lower back so it’s all connected. I was recently listening to a very interesting podcast (Doc Malik) with Dr Simon King who has nearly 40 years of experience saying that some cases of back pain are related to kidney problems. I hadn’t heard that before. And also the negative role that metal in the body, such as piercings & fillings can have in back pain. Super interesting.
Since we don't have the proper nutrients in our food sources any longer, there will always be issues because our bodies are weakened. Pain is at the top of the list. I've suffered with back pain, among other types, for years. Today, I consume the nutrients that we are missing, 19 months now, and I am healing, having less pain! It's simple and affordable. I'm 61 and feel like I'm in my mid-30s! All the research in the world will end with the only true help that will come when we start using God's supplies AGAIN! I'm doing it and proving it!

I've had neck pain, nerve pain and shoulder pain everyday for seven years now, I saw one of the uk's top doctors, she has been mentioned in newspaper articles and news outlets as being the top doctor in her field, she said if she had my condition she would just walk it off, and it's just the way god made me 😂, its a joke how someone so high up doesn't think of pain being different for each individual and thinks she could cope with anyones pain, ive talked to others in similar situations and it seems that they are being failed by this view, things like the pain scale set this wrong view that someone's pain can be interpreted by another so easily
I have had lower back,pain for over 20:years. All l get is pain killers (Tramadol). I now have been diagnosed with cancer. I have other health problems. How much more do l have to tolerate before l take drastic action?
I am holding space with you right now. I had diagnoses of Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) in 2013 and a chest-wall recurrence in 2016. A highly, rare, disfiguring head cancer in 2014 requiring a huge skin graft from my left thigh to close the wound once the tumor was removed. I am absolutely not complaining. I was bedridden for 8 years. I was in excruciating pain for 5 years. I was beside myself, how could I get out of this. Life had zero quality. I was miserable beyond compare.
Longest story short, Ketamine 120mg sub lingual per day in divided doses of 15-30mg at a time, Pregabalin titrated up to 75mg’s three times a day, duloxetine 60mg’s three times a day, and compounded LDN 9mg in am and 3mg at bedtime. I am now able to be up and about for 6-7 hours at a time.
This is what worked for me This is not medical advise, always consult your healthcare providers before starting an RX medication regimen.
Most importantly, I completely overhauled my diet 360 degrees. As little added sugar as possible. Keto, fresh low-starch vegetables, moderate fresh fruit intake per day.

Thirty minutes in and it’s good but I don’t see it very helpful for me. I’m 60 now had my first back surgery at 27 only two bulged discs but I was unable to stand at the time to load my printers at work, I did it on my hands & knees. I’ve had moderate to severe all my adult life, no injury. At this stage of my life it’s my attitude. The glass is still half full. My back does feel better when I get a 20 minute walk. I still love to dance and will every chance I get.

After listening to this I started bending and rounding with my back and I herniated a disk in my lower back which is now giving me bad sciatica. I think this information should have been presented with a little more caution.

The pain is in my FEET, and tailbone.....I had numbness in my butt cheek. 7 bulging discs and said it's not the cause and to see a neurologist. 😭 10 weeks of debilitating pain I feel I'll never get out of.

Yes, the pain became acute when it involved the nerve roots but, the other deep but vague pain I had from the start of the same year ( 9 months). Although I know some poor souls have it for years, so i suppose mine wasn't cronic.

Lack of nutrients makes you anxious and depressed.your system releases cortisol a lot and damage your nerves...pain is the symptom of that process...

Osteo arthritis, my back, neck, hips, knees. Pain 24/7. I do not have a life, as it only consist of pain. On top of that I am on Warfarin so I can only take useless paracetamol for the pain.

If it's ok, take all sorts of hea lth supplements, also vegan omega 3 such as flaxseed oil, and stop animal protein, and rely on plant protein supplements, also cereals, sprouts.. Problem is mostly in the digestion

I'm 45, suffered with lower back pain since mid 20's. Started off with an injury but then would get annual flareups which would result the whole right side of my back going into spasm. Now in my 40's, the annual flareups are monthly but not a 10/10 but like 6/10. It disrupts my daily activities, sitting, standing, driving, socialising and causes anxiety. Read Dr Sarno, Alan Gordon, gained an understanding of neuroplastic pain and over the last 9 months with somatic tracking, I'm able to reduce flareups from 9/10 down to a 3/10. However, since starting the somatic tracking in January, it seemed to unlock more flareups but less intense. Is this part of the healing process? I'm trying to eliminate it completely. I can now link a lot of my lower back pain to my emotions such as stress, my back is my stress barometer!

True! Keep moving (gradual strengthening), but technically you have chronic pain (if youve had pain for more than 3 months), you can follow any of the advice given for chronic pain management too

Thank you so much this was very educational for me I had a very hard year was diagnosed with herniated discs was told wrong advice I went nine whole months without bendi or twisting my spine because of fear I was told to constantly engage my core this all was a nightmare for me my back was constantly spasm very tight burning painful for 1 year I finally saw Doctor that told me to start stretching and moving my spine because it was okay to do so I'm starting to get a little bit more flexible again but it's still tight and goes into spasms a little bit now I know never to embrace the core except for when I do my ab work thank you so much for this video I'm praying that my back will go back to normal again does anybody have any tips how to relieve tight muscles in the back what I can do??

I’ve had Chronic Dry Eye Disease for 2 years. Not only is the disease painful, it’s life altering and doesn’t get treated the same as other diseases.
Can I ask if you know what is causing the dry eyes? I have the same problem along with photosensitivity which started first. Sjorgrens syndrome has been mentioned but no diagnosis. Eye drops do not work, I put them in and I swear the heat in my eyes boils the drops. It's miserable and getting worse.

As a 50 year sufferer of back pain I feel that I am in a position to make comments.
Education in how to use your body cannot start early enough
As with how one exercises and what one puts in the body
Scans ASAP after the injury are crucial, along with a proper assessment
Once the back has been damaged the weakness will always be there
Hence the precautionary body movements
Exercise and diet are most crucial in preventing further episodes
Back problems are physical problems that occur due to ignorance of knowing how to manage one's body correctly, along with physical abnormalities such as stenosis, a short leg, extra vertebrae, and muscle issues like extra large piriformis muscles

Fine hypothesis, but lacking proof.
Having the nutrition, (fuel) for the human body to function properly, all the organs functioning in unison, also affects the emotions, even a person's will to live, their thought processing, the body being able to protect itself with it's health, and for many like me, it causes healing. Chemicals corrupt the proper function of the body and brain power. Plus, too many consider normal human emotions as medical conditions. So there's that.... I take certified organic nutrients, the only affordable ones that are the best, and my life is changed from miserable to so very enjoyable. For 19 months now, I'm doing it and proving it!

No one is selling hope. Hope is a choice. If you don't have hope, then you won't believe the solutions will work... So you won't try. Hope is the first step.
The second step is to diversify all the inputs in your life, with a bias toward nature. That means you should diversify everything that your 5 senses detect. Diversify your nutrition with whole foods. Diversify what you listen to and watch, both information, entertainment, and nature itself. Diversify the things you touch and feel as well. Literally _touch grass._ Get dirty. Breathe in pollen. And in addition to all that, you must exercise. I find the best way to tick several of those boxes at once is to find a few friends and/or a few strangers, and then go hike in a national park or grow some food in a community garden with them.
They have never been in real pain and can never cure it just drug it so frustrating

Unless I missed something, I can perform heavy deadlifts without concentrating on proper form? Ie; I can lift with a rounded back? I beg to differ.
When they talked about lifting they were talking about lifting everyday objects that common people would do, not heavy deadlifting in the gym. Continue doing that with proper form! 🎉
What about chronic upper back pain which I have, damaged discs in my neck pressing down on my nerves, got it in my late 60s after years of tight shoulders and poor posture due to stress from a narcissist mother.
The neck pain is 'back pain', most of the concepts mentioned in this video would apply in my opinion
So many expect too much from doctors. Sometimes there is no answer. You can manage things with medication, or surgery, but there really is no other solution. Pseudoscience gives you something to do, but it often comes down to the body adjusting, or healing itself.
