@@MakeAndDestroyFireworksBrother, have you ever made lead gunpowder? I heard that lead is smokeless. I searched all over the Internet but there is no video about the production of lead gunpowder.
It isn't only the oxidiser percentage m&d it is the charcoal type and the granule method you use! Try to press it in press let it dry and the crush it use willow charcoal and 62 20 18 ratio and 3% dextrin but the ball mill time will be more ! 10 hours (recommend-optimal)👍 great video thumps up!
As I've already mentioned, many factors yet to discover. Haven't done different granulations & proportions for BP yet, but I'm sure that can also be one of these factors. Cheers & I agree with you.
When I make my lift charge, I just use 100 1/2 inch marbles in a 3lb ball mill, with a eastern red cedar charcoal, I let it mill for 3-4 days and then granulate it, it burns so fast sometimes it looks like flash. Red cedar is one of the fasted charcoals I’ve used, the hardwood is mostly good for making tiger tail stars.
I have made perfectly good lift powder without milling. You just need very fine powders and granulate it nicely. I can barely tell the difference once it has been suitably used in a way that creates good pressure so the shells must be well fitting.
You need to ball mill all of your components together (75-15-10 plus none) Tell it feels like tacom powder in between your fingers. Then wet it with 100% h2o + 1 percent dextrin, do this until you have enough to incorporate into your batch of BP at a rate of 24% I mill enough BP so that I have 1000 grams or 1kg of powder then I do the following. knead into ball then press/rub thru a .25 mesh screen onto paper. Place into sun and sun dry in about 1 - 2 hours for a 1 kg batch. Enjoy.
so you just add 75%kno3, 15%charcoal, and 10%sulphur mixed in a jar and add 75% water and 25% rubbing alcohol? Does this mean you can make black powder without ball mill?
This is the question that I always had because I tried making 100 grams of this without the ball mill mixing for 5 minutes and then it was so shit so I did some research and found this video and I’ll try this let me know if it worked for u
When I make mine, I only run it though the screen once. However I do ball mill the meal powder for at least 3 days to a week. When I first made BP, thats what I found very interesting. Like after 1 day of ball milling you look at the powder and don't think that milling it longer will do anything, but it does! Like after 1 day, it burns ok, after 2 days, it gets a little better, but when its been milling for 4 days to a week, that shit burns super fast. Sure its alot of time to mill it, but saves you on the labor part of granulating it.
@@flarenator yeah i agree... that's nuts. and a colossal waste of time IMO. there's no reason why anyone should have to ball mill for longer than an afternoon to get BP that's fast enough for anything one could possibly need it for... again, just my opinion tho. to each their own!
Can you tell why my black powder does not look black but kind of grey? I don't have a ball mill. I do it all in a grinder. Even with the correct proportions my black powder is not fast at all let alone granulated one
you must use the 'CIA'metodo, ball miller willow charcoal whit sulfur, then the cia metodo, after this, return the composotion to ball miller, for many time.then granulater.fast powder.
I don't understand why different types of wood within the main hard/soft category make allegedly noticeable differences. I'm not doubting folks claims, but like pine vs cedar (dude making amazing BP said he noticed good results with even the cheapest soft woods) what the heck could actually be the factor? I can't imagine on a microscopic level there is THAT big of a difference between woods in char form. My gut tells me that it's a different variable that folks are attributing to the charcoal. I'm sure lots of dudes have used 2 different batches of S or oxidizer from the same source and changed the charcoal, but unless you use the exact same batch of each ingredient, well mixed, only changing the charcoal type, it would be impossible to tell for sure. Same exact, trusted source of reagents could have 2 varying batch qualities of the same ingredient, so I'm still scratching my head to figure out why and if willow, for example, is somehow superior. I feel like any given wood just happened to be the common source or charcoal for a given area that was known for master artisans, and they could have made equal quality booms with ANY wood
Look for lump charcoal briquettes have binder and clay added to them which will make for really bad black powder. If you can’t make charcoal look for LUMP charcoal used in a charcoal bbq
have you tried glutinous rice starch? i have heard 3% by weight, instead of dextrin, makes it better. Just wondering...i have only tried your way, so far. Appreciate your videos.
As little as 1% will do. I haven't made BP for a while, but to 1 kg of BP I used to add 10 grams of SGRS. I added it afterwards by mixing it to a "gel" with 125-150 ml water and then mixing it with BP that I had ball milled for 3 hours.

Is it possible to add clorate to add more power maybe a 10 to 20 percent? Kno3 is weak even if i tried to ball mill it in hours I dont wanna ball mil it for days thats a big waste of time
If you value your life you'll leave the chlorates away from the sulfur. It becomes friction and impact sensitive. The ratio greatly impacts this sensitivity. They're all sensitive though.
if you don't have a ball mill then use a cylindrical plastic bottle and put you 75% 15% 10% Black power in it and put round marboll or lead ball in the bottle then Shake it for 2 hours ( shake it for more hours is better) then test it ,i am sure you'll be surprise
Not sure what machine you're talking about but you'll definitely need precise measurements for this one. You could measure by parts (won't be as precise) with little spoon-like thing, for example 5% is one spoon, you'll need 15:3:2 spoons for BP mix and approximately add dextrin for granulation. Make sure you have read enough before going into pyro creations to stay safe :)
I don't know where you live and what laws are there but how are you able to legally set off fireworks all year round. are you able to get a permit. This is major road block for my pyro making.
Nice work granulating but it definitely needs a better mill ratio. 50% of the mill jar needs to me media and just cover the media with comp thats the proper ratio for milling however slower powder is good for gugger shells like 5 inch canister with multi breaks. I personally dont use a binder or water I Luke isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol to wet. I do sometimes add 1.5% dextrin or sgrs to slow it a bit because it's to fast for my cakes. Good work.. keep it up
I use brass balls 1 inch, mill is 30% filled, that seems to work. When I bought them they were $1 each now they are $5 each. Meanwhile the price of gold is going down, had I known I would have bought brass instead.
got a question, might not be the best place but who cares: so I don't have many screens, only a small 20mesh. I have a ball mill with lead media, though. I want to make some fountain comp but heard ball milling makes it too hot most of the time. anyone know if there's any danger in milling a comp with less media than normal and for far shorter periods of time?
I’ve actually tried this. I broke my 100 ball media into 1/4 cups, so 25 each cup. I mixed some various batches and what I found was it just takes a little “subjective” extra time to mill. I’ve see a few others try this, it was not my idea.
Your doing this the hardest way possible. Mix the chemicals before you run it through the shifter. 100 mesh screen run it through three times and shake in bucket before next screen. Then put the mix in a ball mill. The longer you grind it the hotter the powder will be.
It's not that I use this process to just mix but more importantly to feed the charcoal particles with other two components in wet state. That's what improved my performance in comparison to mix & mill only process. 100% better results. Cheers.

Paulownia charcoal but you've probably discovered that by now. I personally think it makes faster bp than wrc.
Do NOT use marbles… they can, do, and have been proven to spark and cause mill explosions. You need to switch to lead balls ASAP…
