With hill climbing starting to take off in the UK, here is a video with some ideas you can apply to your cycling to increase your all around performance as well as climbing faster! Please feel free to chip in the conversation in the comments below!
Good info, thanks! Proper engaged in your hill climbing training I purchased on training peaks too and see how this ties in to that. I went from 3-4 hours a week to 6-8 now. I mostly do the sessions in the morning before breakfast, work and the rest of the family wake up 😄👍
great tips Ed, re epic power hill climbs, you can almost approach this from a sprinter's perspective - that would be big ring brute power for first 20-40 seconds ... an off the seat effort (1000 watts?), then drop it to 500, 600 whatever you can sustain and finally the remnants of the sprint across the line. Completely different to your typical mountain climb and smart pacing and threshold levels. Zwift would be a good training tool for these principles.
Fantastic advice! Some of the best I've seen on utube. Good to hear from someone like yourself, who knows what they're doing, break it down like that. As makes perfect sense. It can all get a bit confusing sometimes wondering (and also not really knowing) if you're doing it right!
Thank you my friend! You hit the nail on the head. Always tons of informative stuff out there but sometimes I wish it was just simple and to the point so we can get out the door. I try to draw on my experience as much as I do the science.
I hate climbing but hitting the hills of late, albeit very slowly 🐌 suppose its about losing some weight for myself and building up the confidence on the hills.
Good stuff Ed. I'm not a racer... I'm the wrong build... and let's just say... at the wrong end of middle-aged. I'm more interested in big days out, but I do like talking 4 or 5 big (ish) hills on my routes. I guess all these tips will help me regardless, but is there any one of these that would be more important for me? I'm not really bothered too much about going up hills as fast as possible... though everyone loves a PB on Strava!
Did a single anaerobic effort today, set new 1 and 2 minutes power PB's. Thankfully the cafe was right at the end of the segment, scone jam and cream 😂
Only me that got stuck on what Ed did had writen on top of his left hand ? lol Odd man out here i guess , great video non the less , Rollo or Rolla is what i could get from the hand no idea what that is do . :)
I watched for Bwlch y Groes video at least a dozen times. I took a crack at at 6 days ago! You are not human! I made it .53 miles from the top before I nearly fell over. Walked a .10 mile, remounted at the fork and cycled up to the top. Can’t wait to have another crack!
if two of the same person rode 100 miles and evreything was exactly the same except for one did it in zone 2 and the other did it in zone 3. the zone 3 person would be faster. without any other training.

Cheers Ed! Thinking about the cake at the top of that hill now 😉
Thanks for this & good luck in you HC season👍

You got it, sneaking it in when you can, I approve :)
I liked the last bit with the cake that didn’t sound as painful as the previous bits 😂👍
Thanks Ed. When time allows/schedule, one for longer climbs would be great.
Funny enough Ed, there is a decent cafe at the top of the Old Shoe - The Ponderosa!
i come from a running backround ! and the one minute efforts are a kin to the 400mtrs pace perfect ed !!
Love your work mate. Hope the hill climbing season goes well for you. Looking forward to the content too
Thanks 👍very kind!

Ed...Did LOX on Zwift this am....5 x3 mins VO2...it hurt lots so thanks....gotta help for Girona in a month. Keep up the good work mate.
Fantastic training insight spot on the 3 pace approach (under/at/above RP) was waiting for this to drop all day. Thank you Ed
Very welcome! Glad it was helpful :)
exelent edd !! a solid guy from wales
I will try the anarobic session after my rest day 😅
Great vid, looking forward to seeing some hillclimbs!
The cake example at the end did it for me... I'm off out on my bike!
haha
Great video Ed, gave me some motivation to keep pushing on after a bad cycling performance today , roll on some uphill PBs 😁
Three legged stool I call it. Without one leg you fall off the stool. Good luck this season.
Good insights Ed ...
Breathing really Hard 😂👍🏼👍🏼💪💪great vid .
Thanks 😅
You had me on cake ! Nice video 🙂
Thank you 😋

Exactly that, you'll be ready for the Mallorca Camp in no time ;)
@@edlaverack What Majorca trip 😉

Been following your YT and Strava Ed and the build up to the Struggle. Are the hill climb champs televised?
Not televised, maybe a Facebook Livestream but the only real place to get the coverage is this youtube channel ;)
Another insightful video Ed👍. I am going to try to climb faster....as I don't want to miss the cake🍰😂
haha

Rollers. My Rollers I needed to pick up so that I can warm up before my hill climbs on them.
Im with you absolutely hate anaerobic efforts.
Thanks Ed, Great vid!!! Is your climbing triangle different for longer climbs say 30-60min? More sweet spot or FTP intervals?
Exactly that Shane 👍🏼
The Climbing Mountain ⛰

Ahh, too kind! Fair play, it defeats lots of riders that climb, the top bit is almost faster walking!!
The main thing people get sucked into is thinking more TSS or more weekly kms means you are getting fitter
Preach that!
Who wouldn't climb a hill for cake. Count me in ☝
You can eat the cherry but not the cake 😅
5x5 is 20?
Obviously 😂.... great video though, that's the kinda thing I would say! ..... Obviously ❤
What i took away from this video is don't be last up the climb or there will be no cake left 😭🤣😂
Exactly!

Faster in terms of speed on the ride.
@@edlaverack the rider would also be faster.
