LOL @ the few haters in the comments. The truck was built on a serious budget out of almost strictly salvage parts. It was never meant to be a "restoration" it was simply a shop wrecker. Yes the engine is dirty. No it wasn't rebuilt. Commenters never cease to amaze me at their willful ignorance on any subject but y'all just go ahead and keep hating. Let's see what you built? =)
I really love this build. I've been dreaming up and planning a car hauler ramp bed truck. I'm familiar with square bodies so I've been looking at 1 ton frames, p30 frames, and these 3500HD frames. That led me here. I really like this frame. I like the beef, front and rear suspension, axles, 4 big disc, and 19.5"s. I would swap in my own drivetrain and an older body I've got in mind. Although your body is black is 😍. Next question is can I regear the diff to something around 3.73 or 3.42? If not, then I might go 14 bolt or AAM but then I've got mismatched wheel patterns. I wonder if I can put these 3500HD spindles onto a square body. The research continues. Very very nice truck you built. I adore this in black.
I did repo for almost 10 years. This Dynamic is my favorite bed for repo. I'm a damn surgeon with that bed. I love the rearward visibility immensely. It has a few small drawbacks..... (I would repo about 10 cars per 8 hour shift usually 6 days a week, so I used it pretty hard, our whole crew ran these hard.) They are great but with this much use and abuse.... the center pivot wears out too fast or breaks compared to other tow beds. The hoses burst pretty often. The hoses can tear but that's with any autoloader setup. If you're hooking up something and its next to the curb or half on the curb or anything that forces one claw not to close... I've burst hoses doing that or snapped the bolt the cylinder attaches to. That bolt was my #1 failure.. I carried extras always. In a jam sacrifice a short screwdriver in there, a long one will catch on the car and bend. The bolt brakes on one side mostly, I forget which side, because the cylinder pushes on it directly where the threads start. On the other side it pushes on the shank part of the bolt and it rarely fails there. When the L arm bend from being overloaded you can flip them onto the other side and they'll bend back eventually. Dynamic has updated L arms and pivots. The cylinder that lifts is kinda weak for big trucks but you can rev the engine a bit to help. Since you can't adjust the L arms like the old manual stuff... if you have a flat on the towed vehicle, you can use the spacer adapter thing but what I usually did on flats or missing wheels is throw a 4x4 across the lift and cradle the suspension on it just be careful it can shift and fall off. If you tow at night get good lighting but not so bright that drivers will rearend you while you're hooking up. I liked to paint the cross bar tips white so I can see them at night. If you tow something heavy those L arms like to spread, the strap moves, and it all gets loose.... so I would hit the jaw closed once in a while on a bump. So yeah she has issues but it's still a super great bed.
*looks like someone loves this body style truck as much as i do with all those out in the yard, holy cow! nice wrecker. would love to have one of those with a dirty max on it or a flat bed with the dirtymax either one*
This guy is named Richard and he inspired my 3500HD crew cab build with reading about the build of this HD and others in the past, however he has not build one in a long time!
This Video was great until you started putting totaly diferant trucks in the end i bet there was at least 3-5 diferant trucks shown from at least 3 states awayfrom each other
Kinda thinking he built it as a sneaker lift at first to make some money, Then turned around and found a donor truck for the right price and then turned it into a real nice wrecker.
I always liked the 3500HD repo wrecker I use to operate. It turned tight for certain. Have a friend with a long wheelbase 3500HD wrecker. Think its a Jerr dan. Twin line none auto loader though.
Is the truck @15:44 reinforced? Bed looks a little tilted back.. My 95 does the same with a sneaker lift installed on it, i was thinking I had to reinforce my frame..
I’m curious about the fabrication of the wrecker. The initial build was based on an early illusion type hydraulic Chevron Rebel Bandit and a Dynamic design but ultimately what the build ended up with was a refurbished Dynamic with a fold up wheel lift. What happened with the first wheel lift that was shown? I noticed the wheel grids did not extend simultaneously. Was there not a proportioning valve? Was this a failed attempt and the second wrecker an afterthought? What was the total cost of this build vs purchasing a new truck and wrecker from a distributor who builds them new?
First unit was an ancient Sneeker lift that had been hacked with JerrDan spoon ends. It was what was available. Later the white wrecker seen late in the video suffered its final engine failure (6.5td) so the Dynamic bed was swapped from it
Good Video...can you tell me if a `1993 Gmc 4x4 can have a PTO attached? Have a 2 wheel drive GMC tow truck. Someone bought a 1993 pickup 4x4,automatic thinking they can just put the trans pto on the pickup..thanks...be safe..
Was this project out sourced? And how long did it take to build? Have a 1993 had a 450 in it..switched to a 350....engine still not running right. Would like to re chassis....
Just one question what’s the plastic that’s under the front grill mine is missing that part but I have no luck find it I hope knowing the name can help me
+MRJEB25 Hell no manual windows suck. I've never had a problem with my power windows and my one truck is a 94 Chevy. The more options the better and the more desirable the truck is. There's nothing desirable about a bottom of the line truck you could give me a bottom of the line truck if it was free. No one want them either when it comes time to sell I see plenty of bottom of the line trucks sit on Kijiji for months sometimes years cause they are bottom line trucks.
Well friendo, you know what they say about opinions and assholes. Just a personal preference I guess, especially for a truck that actually works for a living, not one that just drives me places.
+MRJEB25 I drove tow truck for a bit believe me you need power windows it's to much of a pain to reach over to roll down windows manually and talk to a customer. And the more options in the truck the better a customer that's broke down doesn't want to ride in some bottom line truck im sure they would like to be comfortable. We had one tow truck ( for very long ) that didn't even have air conditioning. It was painful to run in the summer and you could tell the customers were pissed off having to ride in such a hot cab on top of there bad day already. Needless to say we ripped the wrecker off the truck and tossed the truck in the parts row.
Hi Hand built cars, I can see that you are in to 90's chevy gmc full size pickups suburbans. If you ever have to r&r a 4l60e trans from a 4x4 of that vintage, check out my youtube video, "98 chevy tahoe 4x4 automatic transmission r&r made easy", Tell me what you think. Pat
Gas motor for a tow truck.. no bueno.. grande caca..diesel or nothing in a tow truck..blaaaaah..better not tow anything over a Honda civic. To run a PTO on gas ..that's where I shut it off.
By the way "Hand Built Cars" I never gave y'all permission to use my pictures; what the hell are y'all doing making videos out of other people's pictures you lifted from a web forum?
@someotherplace Hi, I apologise for making this video about your build, just wanted to show your amazing project to others. All the credits are in the description so people can visit your build thread and read full build story. In the beginning I was making this type of videos, later on started to film car shows and do video interviews with the people who build and restore their cars and slowly transition from slideshows to interviews. ;) If you don't want to see this video on the channel I can delete it. ;)

I still can't believe all that work not to add power windows and Lock's .

I don’t care what people say about this. The hours spent on building the truck from the ground up is what they should look at.
If only gm made a new real 3500HD even bigger and badder but want solid front axle 4x4
Oh and a manual transmission
That's what the 4500 is now
I love it u did fantastic job on the truck well done
*looks like someone loves this body style truck as much as i do with all those out in the yard, holy cow! nice wrecker. would love to have one of those with a dirty max on it or a flat bed with the dirtymax either one*
DaddytechEnt ; Yeahh no kidding
COOL!! BAD ASS LOOKING TOW TRUCK!!! MY F'N FAV COLOR BLACK!!!!
That truck is perfect
Beautiful job , thanks, Chuck
I like the black gmc grill and light surrounds.Much better then the other chrome grill surrounds
NICE RIG....YOU DO gOOd work...
This guy is named Richard and he inspired my 3500HD crew cab build with reading about the build of this HD and others in the past, however he has not build one in a long time!
I'm curious as to what yours looks like. I also have a 3500 waiting to receive a drop and smooth job. I'd like some ideas!!😯
Does Richard have a channel??
nice well done
Супер машина, мне очень нравится. Хочу такую машину купить. Поддерживаю вас.
The first truck was Killer
Muy buena les quedo muy bonita saludos desde mexico
This Video was great until you started putting totaly diferant trucks in the end i bet there was at least 3-5 diferant trucks shown from at least 3 states awayfrom each other
It was only 1 different truck, and if you watched you would notice it was the donor truck for the wrecker body.
Yeah, the truck traveled from TX to FL back to TX. =)
Why did you use a motor hydro pump instead of running the pump off the transmission? Great job!
Think you for the video
Cool vid! Now i want to redo mine.
That truck could be a dump truck for landscaping too tho looks good for a tow truck.
Excellent 👍
Good 👍🌹
Bad ass
very nice!! of course i have a 98 k1500 with the same (for the most part) front end. grill, lights, so on. nice lookin truck! just sayin
Love obs, wish he wouldn't done the wheels black, other than that it looks great
Putting a dirty motor in it makes no sense at all
Curious as to why you built a truck with a sneaker lift, then you take it apart and put a wrecker on it, why?
The Wrecker had a winch on the deck. Probably get more use out of the truck.
Kinda thinking he built it as a sneaker lift at first to make some money, Then turned around and found a donor truck for the right price and then turned it into a real nice wrecker.
PandaNooobz how do you get business with a sneaker lift?

Good
Me likie this wrecker looks good
عز يا الجمس 🇺🇲❤️
How did you run engine with no radiator? Great restore.
You can run an engine without a radiator but not for too long.
Nice build, but just curious, what was wrong with the donor tow truck you got the wrecker body from, why was it parted out.
I always liked the 3500HD repo wrecker I use to operate. It turned tight for certain. Have a friend with a long wheelbase 3500HD wrecker. Think its a Jerr dan. Twin line none auto loader though.
Cool
Why all that work to keep the old standard trans in it???
amazing truck, whats the second song though. Catchy

Good questions! May not be the most cost effective build, but cool none the less. I'd drive it.

How is running know? Found a extend cab chevy to replace a wrecker. What you think of extend cabs??? take care...
Wish you were closer! I'm trying to sell my 96 obs Chevy suburban. Dont want to scrap it but it looks like I might have too. Only 136k on her. :(
Christina Jackson I'm in NY..
19 minutes people will never get back! No drive train restore. With those heads it makes maybe 250 horsepower. Waste of time!
Was this project out sourced? And how long did it take to build? Have a 1993 had a 450 in it..switched to a 350....engine still not running right. Would like to re chassis....
That's a big block engine correct?
Mine is a 2002 c3500HD I noticed yours had a tilt steering column what year is your and was it a straight forward swap out
What kinda engine was in that truck.
that looked like the 7.4 liter 454
Gunna have some problems with those duals. Looks like they already scrub eachother
Where are you located?
Just one question what’s the plastic that’s under the front grill mine is missing that part but I have no luck find it I hope knowing the name can help me
All that work and know factory power windows and locks upgrade?
Manual windows is actually better, less likely to break and WAY cheaper to fix! My 01 Silverado has manual everything, and that's why I got it.

What was the first song called?
Name of the first song. ..??
Buy a new one better
zero seven KSA older is always better, stronger, lasts longer 💪
You really cant beat the old GMT400's, back when they were built to last.
