Seems like hyponatremia is kinda hoax. I'm an ultrarunner and still waiting for a clear answer from Dr Greger and Ali about that point. The main point about doing sport (and having a stressfull life, training is part of stress) is to take care about magnesium intake as it is excreted to counter stress.
Care about too much potassium too, can lead to some hyper nervous activity, specially on heart at high intensity workout.

AtlantisArch I dont know if it's a hoax but what I know is when I am cycling for hours in hot climates I am thirsty for salty water. If I don't add salt in my water after a while I can just drink as much water as I want and still feel thirsty. A bit of salt in the water and the thirst is gone.

Anger management, not anger avoidance. I believe in you!

Potassium is an electrolyte that is VERY important in electrical activity in the heart. Too much or too little potassium can cause fatal heart rhythm changes. In fact, Potassium is the primary drug used to stop the heart in lethal injections. For this reason, Potassium supplements should ONLY be used when monitored by a professional healthcare provider.

      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4268622/
"In one of the Hidayat's chapter entitled “Fi al-Imtela' (About the Fullness)”, Akhawayni
described a disease with manifestations similar to those related to
what is known today as hypertension. In his opinion, the disease could
result from the excessive amount of blood within the blood vessels. He
believed that in patients with al-Imtela', the total amount of blood is not normal. However, the quality is normal and could carry out its functions.[15] According to Al-Akhawayni, al-Imtela'
can manifest itself with symptoms including the presence of a pulsus
magnus, sleepiness, weakness, and dyspnea. After these general
descriptions, he explained the possibility of an acute event occurring
with this disease as follows: “… when severe facial blushing,
engorgement of the vessels [superficially located in the head and the
neck], and protrusion of the eyes occur,… there is concern that a vessel
[of the brain] becomes ruptured and uncontrollable bleeding occurs, or
‘sakteh’ [stroke] occurs … and there is the threat of death …; epistaxis
may occur …”. It is noteworthy that Al-Akhawayni in discussing the causes of stroke in Sakteh (stroke) chapter of Hidayat described al-Imtela' as the etiology of hemorrhage within the cranial cavity. "

Was wondering if people who have muscle from working out would show a higher BP reading because it would take more pressure to squeeze their arm for the reading do to the muscle? Also if the body is upping the blood pressure to get it through the problem area, wouldn't taking blood pressure meds be adding fuel to the flame by artificially lowering it preventing the body from trying to help it self and then restricting oxygen to the brain etc?

1:15 Also are you jumping to conclusion about blood pressure, assuming causation with blood pressure alone. It is the improved endothelial function that allows more efficiency (hence allows lower blood pressure) so blood pressure in and of itself is not preventing the cardiovascular problems. That is why blood pressure drugs, which you already know, are not effective treatments for cardio vascular problems. Moreover if endothelial function is healthy, I don't see a problem with moderate salt intake, the key as mentioned in the studies is balance. Too much potassium is moving us in another direction, too low blood pressure and not enough on demand power generation. Sodium plays its role, so does Potassium.

I assume that some "inteligent" people will start to eat bacon together with bananas after watching this :D

I thought you said in another video that it's a myth that bananas contain a lot of potassium, but in this video you don't. I'm wondering why you've changed your position.....I like bananas regardless, but are they really rich in potassium as we have all been led to believe throughout most f our lives or not?

    • @rawsomegrl
      @rawsomegrl 7 лет назад +15

Bananas have enough potassium to counter the sodium. However, compared to other foods, they are not as rich a source of potassium as people think. It's not that they don't contain a lot of potassium, it's that people think of bananas first when they think of potassium.

Oh! Thanks! :) It's just that he says in one talk that they rated lower that manufactured ice cream, and where around 20th on the list of potassium rich foods, but they had since gone down to something like a 1000th! It could be my memory! That's what had thrown me off.

I remember it coming in under a Mc Donalds milkshake or something. I didn't know it had been dropped down further. I haven't read his newest book though, so I could be misinformed also.

It was on a talk on RUclips he said it. I could've remembered wrongly. I'll blame my brain. Either way I'm eating them.

Confusing message, which seems to imply bacon is fine as long as eating bananas / potassium with it. Obviously not judging by the other harmful effects of bacon seen in your other videos.
    Thank you regardless! :)

3:26 avoiding anger and sexual intercourse is actually very good advice imo. Men lose life energy each time they ejaculate.

But don't we need about 2500 ml of salt a day? I understand if one eats a lot of processed foods, but I don't. As a vegan, If I don't sprinkle some salt on my food, I'd be 100% sodium free. After all, the action potential of the brain neuron works with sodium and potassium. It seems that you're suggesting totally sodium free diet which couldn't possibly be healthy and is in fact even detrimental to one's health.

matchbox555 sure you can. They are very low dose, however. This is intentional, as it is dangerous to get too much potassium. You can buy no-salt, which is potassium chloride and use it instead of salt. Just don’t go crazy with it, as in don’t put a tbsp in a meal or something

3:30 Cooking beans and potatoes without salt does not sound so good. Sounds tasteless and inedible. Better to eat food that has some added salt, then not be able to get the nutrients in at all.

Buy nu salt it's made from Potassium chloride and has no sodium.
If you can't handle the taste then try Morton Lite Salt. It's 50% salt and 50% Potassium chloride. The Potassium chloride cancels some of the Blood Pressure effects from the salt.

Thing is I'm not afraid of high blood pressure, I think salt is a natural balance for high potassium foods which is why it tastes good. Salt intake is also dependent on exercise levels and temperature which will determine how much electrolytes are being lost. When I lived in Thailand for example (very hot tropical place) they would actually ask if I wanted to add a quarter teaspoon of salt to my fruit smoothies, the people there even recommend it because out there people sweat buckets
