Realistically I think they if they had just bothered to update the game instead of leaving it in its current state (which isn’t bad, but it has gotten quite stale) just killed it. People wanted to see new characters, they wanted to see top tiers get nerfed and low tiers buffed, but the community waited and waited and… nothing. Nothing announced at or after evo 2023, absolutely nothing. Players knowing that the game probably won’t be updated at all for at least 2 years kills a lot of the hype, especially with a ton of new promising games coming out. It’s understandable that fb doesn’t have the resources to focus on two games at once, but just balance patches instead of new characters could have worked to at least help this game stay in the spotlight for a little longer

Unfortunately while those would be simple solutions, it’s still tied to the main series and type moons way of doing things. With the second part of the Tsukihime remake taking forever to release (that’s also supposed to add new characters and stuff) this was always gonna be the case for any Melty game that released while only one part of the VN is out.

I bet french bread really wanted to go big with this game in every aspect after such a long wait, but they probably had some guy in a suit from type moon constantly telling them " no you can't do that, no that character is not canon, no you can't use this or that " this plus some weird gameplay design choises ( shield ) only made it loose the appeal of both melty fans and Fighting game players, and now that UNI2 is out, most people won't see any reason to go back to Lumina. One of my favorite thing about anime fighters is that even though the feel similar in how fluent and flowy every character is. Everyone of the fighters are different in so many ways that you can definitely feel the differences that make the game unique and fun in its own way. Melty blood is one of those games I absolutely love to play cause I feel free with combos and how easy they end up being. Melty blood to me is like a good step to introduce to anime fighters like blazblue and undernight.

Hey. Love the Melty input. As a long time Melty fan & player, thought Id add my own thoughts too.
1: I'm still annoyed that the Tsukihime Remake wasn't released to states at the same time Lumina came out. Missed opportunity imo. Least it will come out soon and I'm looking forward to play that too. It will give me more context to the new Melty.
2: Evo 23 not announcing any Melty content after finals was another missed opportunity imo. I woulda been hype if like... Len, Satsuki, or Nero was just added.
3: I guess FBs focus was to get UNI2 advertised. I was excited to play it briefly at the ASW booth.
4: Maybe TM put all the focus on getting Tsukihime out worldwide, so they are keeping the next Melty character in their back pocket for 24. Pure speculation and wishful thinking, but I can dream.
And that's it. Thanks again for the Melty content ❤

Three problems personally. First is obviously the shield mechanic. There is a reason why people dont like dealing with rekkas or grapplers, its because the RPS is too simple. While something like wakeup DP is an RPS as well, there are multiple factors that go into it. I don't think people dislike the ability to shield, but more so the actual RPS that comes after one takes it. There's a good reason why people disliked TACs in MvC3 Vanilla (not so hated in Ultimate though, mainly due to the discovery of TAC infinites which increased the viability of many point characters previously never used) even though there was a strategy behind it. The existence of a powerful shield mechanic kind of semi-forced you to learn OSs as well to beat it, and these types of OSs are not something people enjoy learning even back since SF4. A~D OS was in MBAC and MBAACC as well, but shield was a relatively less powerful mechanic that you never really had to rely on it heavily imo.
Second is the roster. It kind of blatantly felt like a marketing ploy and not necessarily made to revive a game. Even the devs had stated that they pitched the idea of an FGO fighter to Type-moon but they were told to work on Melty Blood since the new Tsukihime Remake novel was going to come out. Most people were more or less fine with the inclusion of Saber since that apparently was a prototype character, but the lack of the main character of the entire Melty Blood series Sion, as well as obvious inclusions that wouldn't spoil the VN like Ries or Len really hurt the interest of previous players. Not to mention the addition of FGO characters, which its existence is the whole reason why Nasu hasn't finished Tsukihime Remake that was announced 10 years ago and has a super bad rep with the old Type-moon fans, kind of was a slap in the face with more marketable characters. I would have easily payed an extra $30 for actual relevant characters and I'm pretty sure a lot of others felt the same. Out of the 8 additional characters 3 of them being FGO and 1 being Neco Arc (again, marketable but no real player actually wants), hurt a lot and just kind of was depressing.
Third and this was is purely my dislike, but Same Move Proration. Basically, if you use the same move twice in a single combo (5C and 5C), the combos scales extremely hard compared to doing something with 2 different attacks (5C and 2C). This crippled combo discovery a lot as well as the pretty fast hitstun decay for combos. Many of the very interesting combos in classic melty blood are loops, and this feature made loops not only unoptimal but basically meaningless, to the point where its often better to just cut out the loop portion entirely and finish the combo which would give you more damage. Again, same issue with the classic jBC jBC AT combos, which are just purely worse compared to jBC AT since the additional jBC scales the combo hard for barely any extra damage, while also a single jump AT gives you more or less similar damage but with oki as well. Most characters enders end with this with a few exceptions like Mario or DA Noel. They addressed this issue somewhat by adding new moves to the whole roster to add new combo routes somewhere around DLC3 but I think that was a bit too late, and it doesnt actually solve the issue anyway.

    • @DeepestDankest
      @DeepestDankest 11 месяцев назад +5

The 2nd point is correct but not entirely. MBTL has characters covered in the first half of Tsukihime's remake which is why spoiler characters like Dead Apostle Noel are around but anyone after Red Garden, such as the characters from the TATARI Storyline from the original Melty Blood, are being held hostage until Tsukihime is actually complete with Red Garden's release for that story to take the stage. Len herself doesn't even seem to exist in Tsukihime remake's universe at the moment since Neco Arc jokes about bringing the old continuity's characters over instead of waiting. I think Nasu is more concerned about getting to his characters their time to be relevant in the visual novel proper before their inclusion instead of being worried about spoilers. Fate characters don't have this issue because they'll never be relevant in Tsukihime's actual story while Nasu seemingly doesn't have any intention of seriously including Kouma or Miyako in future stories too.
Although I think your third point is significantly more relevant, the game just doesn't feel satisfying to play. Same move proration and combo scaling absolutely suffocates doing optimal combos because they're SO EASY that everyone and their mothers above A-Rank are doing the exact same combos. Look at any Kohaku, Shiki, Vlov, and Hisui and they're doing damn near the same 98% combo they have been doing since release week. Sure some of them had new moves added to alleviate this but as you said, so much of the combo is the same since release. They could add any character that I would dream of wanting to be put back in like Wallachia but the combo system is so boring that even a dream inclusion like him or even a guest character from UNI wouldn't bring me back because it's just so unsatisfying to play. "Easy to learn, hard to master" wouldn't be accurate, it's technically incredibly easy to master too and I think the lack of a playerbase reflects that. Lowering the skill barrier like this does help newcomers but it doesn't keep too many of them or veterans around because the lack of depth kills interest in staying when a game is so stagnant and gets figured out so quickly.
Another factor is that I think the internet and social media has inflated Melty Blood's popularity. Memes do not translate to players and more people in this day and age are content to regurgitate the bathroom and neco arc memes for the umpteenth time than EVER stick with these games, much less even play them. I think the unintentional viral marketing with neco arc memes definitely helped its initial launch numbers but it also gave everyone the misconception that Melty Blood was going to become "big" or "save fighting games" when it was never really going to shake off its humble status as a cult classic whose anime aesthetics and visual novel roots, that is hilariously older than most of its audience, would naturally filter out the modern day audience. Tsukihime itself is like a 10 hour read, which is considered really short for VN standards.

    • @BDtetra
      @BDtetra 11 месяцев назад +1

@@DeepestDankest Oh yeah I played the Remake Novel on release in Japanese so I'm well aware of characters like Noel and Dark Apostle Noel being part of the game, which is completely fine. The issue is FGO chars also do not "exist" in the Tsukihime universe, so I personally don't buy the argument of "Sion not being part of the universe therefore not in the game" is true. I do understand that all the Type-moon Universes are somewhat connected, but then all the more reason to include characters like Sion or Ries, previous Melty Characters that do not effect the Red Garden portion of the VN to avoid spoilers. My main problem isn't the fact that the characters aren't there, but more that the initial statement given to us on why Sion was not available was that the game wants to stay true to the VN, and then they decided to add FGO characters. I even remember Kamone answering a question on whether Mech is going to be part of the roster before the release of the game, and his answer was the same thing, they wanted to stay true to the VN. Hey they could have brought Nero(Nrvnqsr) back just for the game since he's not in the remake novel as well. Chars like Sacchin not being part of the roster is completely understandable though, since it most likely would be a big spoiler for Red Garden.
I didn't really go into depth with every character but for a lot of the cast, the very optimal combos and not so optimal combos do like 200-300 damage difference, barely relevant in the grand scheme of things. The more important part of it is the setups and mix you get after the combo, which for most characters usually ended in jBC AT for a safe jump, or some ground combo into HKD and setting up there. I just really like loop combos and MBAC/AACC did it in a clever way, where it limits you with either bounces, very slow hit proration (to prevent 5A whiff ground loops like with Kohaku or Akiha), or just distance limitations. Too often in TL 2B starters and 2A starters have completely different routes because of the heavy hitstun decay on light moves, and it just doesn't feel good to change combos like that. I get that they wanted the game to seem easier at a glance but I do think the lack of flex/BM combos really dwindled the interest in the game after a while since combo exploration is my favorite part of fighting games.
I know for sure that the Devs were aware of the memes, but I'm not sure how big of an influence Neco had on the actual game though. Considering a character takes a decent amount of time to make and the roster including the DLC characters is probably somewhat locked in pre-release, considering its not like French Bread can do anything without Type-moon's permission anyway.

    • @DeepestDankest
      @DeepestDankest 11 месяцев назад +3

@@BDtetra You missed the point about Sion. Sion might not matter for Red Garden but the Melty Blood storyline in the OG continuity was a sequel proper to Tsukihime. Nasu will get to her, Ries, and Wallachia in due time, just after Red Garden so that still falls into the category of "needing to be introduced in the remake continuity properly". Except instead of being gated behind Red Garden explicitly, I strongly believe Red Garden will bring its own update to MBTL while the proper Melty Blood story-arc with Sion's proper introduction will be its own title update afterwards. For all we know, characters like Nero Chaos might be part of the conceptual plan for Satsuki's route because it was supposed to involve Roa and Nero teaming up. So yeah, the spoilers part from the initial interview isn't 100% true but it's not a 100% wrong either.
My point about Neco Arc wasn't about it affecting game development, it was about affecting perceptions that Melty Blood would be a big and populated anime fighter when it wasn't going to be no matter how hard people memed it up like it would be.

    • @pxlpancakes

Just something small to add, not that it particularly actually matters:
I definitely agree that Mash and Ushiwakamaru don't particularly have any good reasons to be in Type Lumina (potential slight excuse for Ushi 'cuz demon clan stuff).
HOWEVER, Dantès actually has a massive and fairly justified reason as to why he's in (even though the actual DLC plot reason is that Neco-Arc is doing Neco-Arc things).
You see, in Fate worlds, Edmond Dantès, the Count of Monte Cristo, is actually the one who kills Roa.
But, like, not "kills" kills Roa. He KILLS kills Roa.
During the events of the "Strange Tales of Heroic Spirit Lore ~King of the Cavern, Edmond Dantès~" FGO Drama CD, a younger Edmond Dantès encounters a Dead Apostle known as Tarantella.
And this Tarantella? Well, he's Michael Roa Valdamjong.
He's still a Dead Apostle somehow, but this Roa never actually had his encounter with Arcueid, and thus has reduced Mystery.
TLDR; Roa gets in a bit of a murder spree across Europe, Dantès spreads some rumors of a party to lure him in, and ultimately, burns Roa's very soul to cinders with his black flames of vengeance.
Obviously this doesn't excuse Mash and Ushi also being there, and neither does it really excuse the lack of Riesbyfe or Len (or even that Mash effectively REPLACED Riesbyfe), but at least Dantès being included has a fair bit of justification.
At the very least, he has more proper justification than Artoria who is just there as cameo since they already had a prototype.

I think another problem with the game beyond just the limited release of characters due to the remakes slow as sin release, is the fact it lost it's identity as a Meltyblood game and became a cash cow for Fate grand order with cross overs that no one who was into the Melty Blood IP were really interested in. Type-Moon fans were probably hype for Saber as a cross over edition because she is the face of Type-Moon really, not just Fate. Start throwing in the Count and Racoon and you lose a lot of the core audience outside of a few die hard grand order fans that just want that wanked harder, while the fans of actual Melty wanting characters like Archetype Earth, Ryougi Shiki, Sion, Chaos, Ries, Wallachia, Len etc etc are left by the wayside and only disappointed in the future. If they ever make another Meltyblood game in the future, I hope they stick closer to their core identity and not cater to the nearest dollar. And also allow the identity of the characters to flourish. Getting rid of Sions tattoo's and the disconnecting facial expressions from her playing student into her being a hardened killer really lost a lot of her intensity.

I loved the game for a while but there were some noticable flaws. My biggest gripe was not with the chars but the system mechanics themselves.
    1) the game was too easy. Hear me out before you make any assumptions. This by itself is not a bad thing, however simple inputs lead to a smaller movelist. They tried with the a,b &c version of moves but for half the cast the difference between them was just slower startup but higher hitstun. No ground bounce, no wall bounce / splat, no changing what the move does. Nth. That means you could reach the ceiling of a character way too fast then left with nth to learn about them.
    2) pressure was non-existent. It was literally easier to escape pressue than continue it. Apart from just blocking and waiting, you had burst, moon drive, reversals, guard thrusts, backdash and the worst of them all , shields. Keep in mind that these are universal and not character specific.
    3) shields. After the honeymoon phase, shields became so annoying to deal with. Literally a univeral frame 1 stop to anything. Everything could be sheilded. Anti air? Stopped. Pressure? stopped. Specials? Punished. Reversals? Punished. Even after nerfs its was way too strong not to interact with but the resulting in a 50/50 mini game that got stale real quick. We say 50/50 but the there were several options (a,b,c, delayed a/b/c, no cancel etc) that ur brain had to do mental gymnastics to figure which had the most value at varying times in the match.
Ending thoughts: if they removed the mini game from shields, making the mechanic more in line with treating the shielded move as if it was block/missed or even just increase its recovery and the sheild once expired leaves the defend with no blockstun, the game may have more depth despite the small movelist. Low recovery moves would recover faster than the shield leaving room for a punish but shielding high recovery move leave the attacker open. Also they need to give every char a passive. Only a few of them have any but just having a passive gives the characters so much more diversity.

This player dropoff consistently happens to every fighting game that isn't one of the Big 3 of Tekken, Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat as they heavily retain their casual audience. I will say that Strive seems to be an exception to this, but I think it could be partially due to the huge launch it had and the amount of support ArcSys is giving it. There are many great games out there with small player bases: BBCF, +R, Rev2, Uni, Killer Instinct, UMvC 3, KOF, etc. One way I've heard best is that your game isn't dead as long as there are two or more people playing it.
French Bread probably put this on the side burner with Uni 2 on the way. Players really hate games that are in a stale state, so I think the lack of updates is the main reason for players leaving, rather than the addition of rollback to other games. Really is a shame that the next chapters of the Tsukihime remake are seemingly holding back any new characters for MBTL.

Melty seems easy at first but it’s actually really hard to get into. The fast paced gameplay burns most people out.
Also it may seem like you can “create your own combos” by just mashing basic attack strings, but once you watch a video on a character’s specific tech you finally realize you’ve been playing the character wrong.

Biggest issue is that they didn't really know what to do from the beginning. This game smells interest conflict between French Bread, Type-Moon, Aniplex, Delight Works and even maybe Ufotable. Excepting Neco Arc (which is the "best" character in terms of private joke and references), all DLC are from FGO (but Artoria... blah blah blah). Dude there isn't even Sion in the game and they call it Melty Blood while their other main game have her ! I still don't understand why they just didn't do a Type-moon all stars the fighterz type of game. They could put every characters they wanted and took Melty Blood as the base for the gameplay.
The fact they launched UNI2 signed the death of type lumina, period.

What I'm waiting for is ArcSystemWorks releasing either a one piece the fighterz game or a big gacha like FGO. I think the One Piece one would be the best as they already announced a remake of the anime, the next season of the live show and the manga/first anime is ending in the next two-three years I guess.

    Its ass, thats what happened.
People wanted it to be the return of Current Code in a modern era and that didnt happen.
The game actually Devolved back into actress again, the most boring version of melty blood.
When a strong chunk of your competitive gameplay ends in B C air throw safe jump for a majority of the cast, cyclic option selects specifically to not interact with the shield system, the utter bullshit clash system like Akihas [5B] eating a majority of the casts engagements (just one example of many) on top of some characters having objectively better toolsets/ clash frames etc
It lead to a game that immediately became unfriendly to new players, boring for viewers due to the homogenized nature of character gameplans (sans like... 2 of them) and the need to learn cyclic meta gaming to stand a chance against dumb characters like Ciel or to avoid the shield system or to counter OS someone's OS.
Defense was absurdly strong, especially pre nerf shield but also post nerf, mixed with moon drive spot checking, certain characters having unbelievably dumb early clash frames and OSing.
The game immediately became unfun, the majority were getting absolutely nuked by the no lifers and there wasnt a community big enough to filter the experience.
It was like this is Unist, where the no lifers were effectively killing off what remains of their own community because the lacked the self awareness to realise that going ape on all the new players dissuades them from continuing to play.
Especially when they play characters like Byakuya or Wagner who are characters that just dont let you play when the players skill level hits a certain threshold.
When you have a lone byakuya sitting in a 1/8 lobby named Please Join you know something has failed.
So i reiterate, the game was ass.
It felt good to play until you played long enough and all the bad kusoge game design reared its ugly head in full force.
Finding outside help was an absolute travesty because the mizuni wiki was a mess of trash opinions and bias being injected into the wiki for months, frame data was changed almost daily and no one could agree on anything.
Strive was structurally more popular due to how blatantly contextual the game is visually.
The high damage meant meant faster games and less negative emotions building up from being oppressed for long periods of time.
That there were answers when well timed by comparison where certain characters like Vlov and Ciel could OS 3C/Super you if you B shield their zoning.
You were penalized for using the mechanic they programmed in no matter how careful you were because the OS activated based on cancel windows.
All of this eventually amounted to a very frustrating experience for the average player and a tiny population of players for the die hard fans.
The game had unfortunately doomed itself.

There can't be more than 1 type of each fighting game at once - an anime 2d, a 3d, and whatever the newest Capcom thing is. There's a limited player base that moves around quickly when they are unhappy with a games balance, direction, or is losing popularity. These games are truly at the whim of their audience.
Remember DNF Duel? This MB game sadly came out in the wrong cycle. Granblue is getting some excitement now but I don't think it'll last, Strive is still "the" anime fighter. I don't see UNIB2 taking it's spot either.

I can't speak for everyone but at least for me, there were just too many little things that ultimately caused me to lose interest.
The launch of the game was rough: online didn't work well, certain mechanics like shields and moon skills were very contentious, the auto-combo system got in the way more often than not, the redesigns were a stickler point for some, the weird justifications for the roster choices didn't hold up to any level of scrutiny, and so on. It left a mixed reception for what was supposed to be the return of a cult classic fighter.
While many of these points did end up getting addressed one way or another, it might have been too late since most players had already moved on to the next new fighter by then. Not to mention videos like those from MaximilianDood putting down the game probably didn't help.
Personally, while I didn't play too much, I was still keeping up with it, primarily getting excited for the DLC characters and the like. But then the 2nd DLC season happened which just killed much of my interest. Like, don't get me wrong, free DLC characters and all the other free stuff was awesome. That 100% should be congratulated. To the average player, this is literally a non-issue.
But to the fans of the franchise, it just left a bad taste. 3 of the 4 characters that season were guests from "Grand Order" (an entry I personally really dislike) and that remaining 4th character was reworked to constantly reference it as well.. There were still numerous fan favorite characters missing, purposely held back for story reasons which, again, just didn't hold up to scrutiny. So out of the 22 character roster, 4 to even technically 5 of them were "Grand Order" based. "Tsukihime"/"Melty Blood" was left in the backburner for over a decade and when it finally got something again, it was like there was no faith it'd stand on its own.
Heck, even another property at the time was affected. "Carnival Phantasm" was a crossover between OG "Fate" and "Tsukihime"/"Melty Blood" and got a new episode for the first time in a decade as well...that was focused solely on "Grand Order", called "Grand Carnival". Completely scrubbing "Tsukihime"/"Melty Blood" out of the picture.
The only hope left was the ending to the additional story segment that seemed to hint that more returning characters were coming...only for nothing to ever happen. French Bread even just recently released "Under Night 2" with a full roadmap for the year. So it feels like even they, the developers, have moved on.
So to conclude, the game just felt mismanaged due to being forced to be a tie-in for the "Tsukihime" remake, which itself isn't even complete yet, and a fan outrage stemming from "Grand Order" getting stuffed in.
