Very brave spraying sandfly attractant on yourself. I was tramping for a couple of day on the other side of the river a couple of months earlier. Love this part of the country. I must ride over to the west coast some time; I find it hard emotionally from Otira down.

I'm loving your vids Runa! There's something so calming and refreshing about you. Sandflies - I actually spray the back of my hands and then wipe my face etc with them. Spray direct on your skin without rubbing is next to useless! Best cure for itchiness is simple coconut oil. ❤from a kiwi who knows!

I have rafted almost every river in NZ....and never found anything that actually works against Sandfly attacks except covering up Burka like. The sound of a river while camping, is magic and the stars you see is a reality check on how small earth is. So glad you got to enjoy that here in NZ Runa 😎✌
Yup, covering up was definitely the most efficient way to avoid the bites although they did bit through my socks 😂 It's all worth it to spend the time outdoors in such beautiful surroundings though, I loved that camp spot!
Another awesome episode!! Arthur's Pass and the West Coast are my favorite parts of New Zealand. you will need to come back and ride the coastal rout from Greymouth up to Karamea one of the best coastal roads in the world. hopefully those sad fly's didn't cause you too much grief hehe!!
I second this. I've been fortunate enough to ride through several countries in Asia and Europe, but the ride through Haast to Wanaka hold a special place in my heart. Enjoy!!

Been there done that. 3 times visit NZ. By rental car…. After my retirement I definitely plan to do it again on a motorbike. My God, I love this country and it’s honest people. During my 2019 trip, I bought some good repellent against those horrible sandflies. I actually worked. Friends who didn’t use is were eaten alive by those little vicious monsters

Very enjoyable again. You have inspired me Runa and I have booked my ferry crossings for Feb/March 2025. I've purchased my camp gear and I'm already doing some practice camps. Plan on doing Tauranga to Gore on my BMW F900XR. Should be fun and I have you to thank. My wife thinks that at 60 I'm too old but i definitely want to have a go.

Hi Runa, wonderful scenic Aurthurs Pass, love it, I drove the opposite direction from West to East when there was some snow on the mountains, stunning. So glad you mentioned the night sky & stars in NZ. I was always astonished by how crystal clear the night sky was on the South Island and the billions(?) of visible stars. Great campsite location, you looked so calm & happy. I wonder if the cheeky Kea parrots visited you also if you stopped at the Otira Viaduct lookout park on the way down to the west coast? What an experience, New Zealand! You know there are seven continents in the world, but there used to be eight, Zealandria; because of the name I assume it’s around there. They say it just disappeared in the sea, “The Lost Continent.”
Runa, great Vid. I used to get an antihistamine cream from the pharmacy to treat the NZ sand flies bites. Of course, a mosquito coil burning upwind of your camping area will also help.
Love your videos. A tip for you regarding g sandfly and mosquito bites. Get a jar of vicks vapour rub, and rub a small amount of cicks into every bite. Ensure it's rubbed in properly. Your bites will soothe and stop annoying you in a matter of minute's.
Thank you! Will and his partner were such great hosts, and hearing hi share from his RTW trip was the cherry on top. As well as Kinga's of course! And yes I did try that oil as well as eucalyptus oil and it helped a bit combined with antihistamins!

That road through to the west coast and Arthur's Pass region is an absolute treasure trove for motorcyclists, and trampers. Brilliant in winter too.
I bet it's stunning with snow covering the mountains and hills up there!

I did take antihistamin pills but a cream to treat locally would probably a better choice. Now I know til next time 😁

Runa, try white vinegar (eddik) on the sand fly bites. If that doesn't help see if you can buy some hydrocortisone to help with the itch.
