Thank You Sir, for taking the time to share your experience and knowledge with all of us!!! I've been looking for a video that takes the time showing the difference of the 9mm/45 acp extractors!!! I found this video to be interesting and informative and very helpful for fitting the extractor!!! Extremely well done video, once again Thank You for producing this excellent video!!!
Patience is very important if gunsmithing is your hobby or career.....Next the proper tools and learning how to use them.....All the videos made by this man are amazing
thank you Sir! this answered a few questions I was stumped over on 9mm as all only had experience in .45 in 1911's.

Thank you. I have been looking everywhere to determine how to fit a 9mm extractor, as I had been told it fits differently than a 45ACP. Your video was the only one I found that clearly showed the difference and what the finished extractor should look like for both. Now with this as a guide, I hope I can tune my 9mm extractor properly. I have tuned 45ACP extractors using tension gauges and the Weigand tool, but I was miserably failing using the same technique with 9mm.
Did this technique help with your 9mm 1911? I’m having similar issues myself with a new Colt 9mm.
@@SA-hk8xj As I recall it helped a lot, but I was still getting feeding issues after tuning, so I took it to a gunsmith. It's odd, I find tuning a 45 extractor super easy but generally fail miserably at 9mm. If you go to the 1911forum.com group, there are a series of technical "sticky" articles on extractor tuning that are useful- but they largely have 45 ACP in mind.
Michael Atamian I agree, 45 is easier. I also hv been on several 1911 forum sights that give info on shaping and tuning the 9mm extractor, but so far it seems like I’m at a stalemate. At least on THIS particular video he gives you the “difference” between the two in the drawings. I’m at the point of trying to shape my stock extractor to more like his drawing vs the “typical” 45 version. I figured if this doesn’t help, I could always try a WC one made for a 9mm?? Just stinks I hv to play around like this on a new gun that should hv had the extractor shaped correctly in the first place, but like all mass produced products, they don’t make them like they used to. Thanks for the quick feedback. Let me know if you can think of anything else I might try. I appreciate the help 👍
@@SA-hk8xj Good luck. The problem I had was I wasn't really able to measure the tension with the tools I had on hand. While these tools worked great for 45 the geometry was different enough they weren't reliable for 9mm. I have a spare 9mm extractor that I never tuned. Maybe someday I will give it go again. One suggestion is maybe to talk to your local gunsmith. I think they have a lot of tricks they know that aren't written down anywhere. You just have to find a good one. I hear you on how the gun was delivered. When my new Colt 45 first arrived, the extractor was so badly tuned it wasn't funny. QC is not what it used to be.
Yes good camera work, patient thorough work!! U would be a great teacher!!!! Ur welcome!!!
Very, very helpful instructions! Thanks! Subscribing now.
Your Incredibly patient...love to have you replace an extractor for me....
Thank you very much:)
Excellent Excellent job!!!! Grant B.. !!!!
Thank you very much:)
Thank you for the detailed answers
A very nice tutorial on fitting the extractor. Exactly what file were you using?
Good one. Thanks for a very informative video. I have some issues with an extractor and I am pretty sure that I will be able to solve them using this video as a guideline. Thank you
Thank you, good to hear.
Don't hesitate to ask if you run into any issues or have any questions
Awesome video
You make that stuff look easy lol. Good job bud 👍
Thank you very much:)
Based on your drawings comparing the 9mm and 45 extractor shapes I understand the difference. I shoot a new 9mm Colt Combat Unit Govt model, that has no issues feeding or extracting. However, I DO hv a issues with erratic ejections (ie the empty cases hit me in the face half of the time). I watched many videos about the shaping of the extractor and tuned the stock extractor like the 9mm drawing in your video, checked the tension with tension test of empty and loaded rounds, and visually observed no “clocking” of extractor with the fire pin stop...yet I still get brass in the face??? Can you suggest anything else that I might hv overlooked? I do not want to send it back to Colt as I hv heard too many stories of the poor customer service and long wait, only to get the gun back and still get brass in the face. Can you recommend something else? Your videos are extremely informative and helpful in explaining how and why you do the things you do 👍👍
Excellent. Thanks. I learned a lot from this.
Thank you very much:)
Great Video. Just got a Canuck 1911 in 9mm. Love it, but it just started to develop an extractor issue, after firing about 50 rounds at the range. The next few rounds will fail to eject occasionally. Tried different ammo 3 different brands and same thing. I am going to give your fix a try. Thanks again.
Thank you.
I would start with checking the tension on the extractor, the modification of the tip is mostly for improving feeding and making it more reliable.
Nice work
Very informative for us novice gun builders, thanks.
Thank you very much!
I’m curious about why you didn’t tension the extractor before you did all the hand fitting. I’m guessing that’s a skill issue and you simply aren’t afraid of snapping it. However the rest of us should probably buy two or three and screw up fitment on one, break the second and finally get it pretty close on the third.
Thank you sir!
Very nicely done video. Some 1911 experts such as Jerry Keefer, God rest his soul, would disagree with you and say that 9mm extractors should be tuned exactly the same as 45acp extractors with regard to the case rim contacting the extractor hook recess, which is the opposite of your fitting techniques. What are your thoughts regarding this? Thanks and once again thank you for your information.
Thankyou
Good vid, Im glad you showed the diffrence between 9mm & 45acp extractors how they catch on the rim of the case. I just fixed a friends 1911 that he messed with the extractor & over cut it so it didnt work. I ordered an o/s fireing pin stop & extractor from EGW the fireing pin stop was too narrow for the extractor right out of the package I had to return it for a new one, just wondering if you have ever see n that before. Thanks again great vid.
Thank you!
I think it was important to bring in to the video the difference in 9/45
Usualy os firing pin stop always needs fitting, have had a couple instants that it has fit directly, but not been too small.
Maybe it has been wrong marked, and you have got a drop in fp stop? Did it fit loose in the slide?
Have only had good experience with EGW parts.
Thank you. I think this is probably why my last round hangs.
With all mags?
I have issues with my colt 38 Super. I tried putting a casing but it wouldn’t hold with the extractor. What should I do?
Excellent video. Very good explanation of 9 vs .45 hook engagement. Is this done due to differences in the amount of rim available for extractor to grip on to?
Thank you very much!
This is the way I have learned to do it, and it works well.
Muito bom as explicações esse vídeo foi top
Thanks.,.
Great vid! Where did you get that file? Is that from Brownells with the safe sides? If it is it's a $50 file.
Thank you!
Yes, its the rail file from Brownells. You can use regular needle files as well.
wolf 83 Is it worth it getting one? is this file only made for extractors?
ybrik5
It depends on your needs. The file is made for fitting the rails on 1911's, but it has such a wide range of use that it's one of my favorites for many purposes.
+wolf 83 thanks.
Is .40S&W extractors different from the two?
Same as 9mm, 38 super and 380. It has to do with the wide base of the brass and the way a square engages with a circle. Smaller circle mean you have to be radius’d more finely and tighter to the mitre of the rebated rim. The wider circle of .45 is closer to the square of the extractor.
sorry.. but so far i know |"is you shoot" the extractor dont pull the case out the chamber.but get PUSHED out and the extractor only helps a litle to send the case the right direction,, . only when you manual pull back then the extractor pulls the bullet out...
Replace a new extractor don't modify it no good.
