  • The Utah Jazz were hosting the Los Angeles Lakers on April 5, 1984 (in Las Vegas, oddly enough). The game was a spectacle for many reasons, most notably for the fact that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was set to break the NBA Scoring Record on this night -- surpassing Wilt Chamberlain. This video will showcase the match-up between each team's starting center. The Utah Jazz, starting the larger-than-life Mark Eaton, and the Lakers, starring the Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The video will be showcasing all of their relevant plays (makes, misses, defense, etc.). It is a thorough and in-depth video that will give the audience a sense of who they were as players.
    Enjoy!

Eaton was a nightmare for Kareem, and in general the Jazz were a nightmare for the Lakers.
If it weren't for Michael Cooper's timely shot in Game 5 in their 1988 playoffs, the Lakers would have lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs.
It might have been the Jazz vs the Pistons in the finals that year.

Kareem put that spin move on Eaton a few times. Too skilled, he always had more than just the hook.

He had to. Eaton was bigger, taller, and stronger than Kareem. But Kareem was much quicker and had far more skill.

Eaton was huge. By comparison, even the 7’2” Abdul-Jabbar looked undersized.
I found a photo of the two of them after they retired and they look more evenly sized.
Everything is relative. I also found a photo of the 7’6” Shawn Bradley posing with the 7’4” Eaton and for once, Mark doesn’t look so huge.
It is terrible what happened to both Mark and Shawn. Mark is gone and Shawn is in a wheelchair if my memory is correct.
