I am a relatively skilled self taught artist and I have to say that color pencils are definitely something that isn’t for everybody. They require a very different set of skills than someone who draws with graphite/coal/carbon. Visually the pencils themselves are more exciting to look at when they’re new and when you don’t know yet how hard it is to to actually get good results with them.
Those pencils were indeed hardar to blend and does not provide essential colors for portraits in smaller sets (but colors can be purchased individually). The reason why it is worthy for it's price is because of their lightfastness.
Why are you not using odorless mineral spirits instead of sharpening over and over to "fill in" the whites of the paper. You don't need to burnish right away. With the right paper, they're great for blending and layering. Also I have to disagree about needing a lot of shades/different colors. They do in fact blend and mix nicely, once you learn to use them!
Fantastic drawing. Really liked the color choices for the highlights and shadows. Btw many artist use wax pencils for their base drawing because of the blending and polychromos for final details. 😊
I love my Polychromos, bout a set of 36 for 33 Euro online on a special offer, glad to have those, although a Iam moostly drawing with pencils and graphite for b/w drawings.
Wow, This video is so underrated! This was so pleasant and exciting to watch, and you shared very helpful and valid points. Also, I’m a huge fan of skull art 💀🙋🏻♀️ I have the Polychromos 24 color set, and am frustrated by how hard they are to layer and how patchy the colors appear on paper, not to mention the color range for $$$. I’m not bothered to blend the colors to get more colors out of them because using these pencils hurts my hand (these are definitely not as easy to blend in comparison to wax based color pencils)😅 🤷🏻♀️ 🥲 *I use a little baby oil to blend the colors with a small square paint brush
If your hand hurts using Polychromos, then you're pressing too hard. That would also explain why your coverage is patchy. I've been using Polys for 3 years, yes they are different to Prismas, but it is well worth persisting with them because when you get it right, they are amazing.
@@PhotosOfBuildings Good point. I've been using them more frequently I'm getting the hang use FC PC (Faber Castell Polychromos) and now reach out less and less to my Staedtler Noris (difficult to blend and not as vibrant) or Bic Evolution coloring pencils 9cheap but nicer quality). I keep in mind what paper I use for my sketches, but for some reason I still cannot achieve a smooth blend (light handed or heavy handed), and end up having to use a white pencil or blender to smooth it out. I'm a visual learner, so it always helps me learn faster and more efficiently when I watch how it works, as well as hands-on to get the feel. This way, I know I'm doing it right
Not agreeing with you, it is depending what kind of paper you are using! The best colour surface is water colour hot pressed or Strathmore for colour pencils or mix-media série 4 (the brown in USA). These coloured pencils are extraordinary good with nice quality pigments! They are perfect for realism drawings, but I am agree with those pencils are not for beginners which I am advising to use Prismacolor premier, if you are a beginner for their wax component instead being more oily such as Polychromos from Faber Castell! The best friendly economic ones with nice coloring for beginner are certainly the Arrtx with wax base or Kalour for their oily base! Hope that you’ll be agreed with me! From Quebec in Canada! 🇨🇦 😊
Thank you .... honestly i haven't try any other pencils. But i can say these are very good pencils .. the problem that i share in this videos applies on every pencil .. if you are buying these pencils make sure you buy the set of 36 or more ....hope this will help you
@Daat e Dio it does, thank you for replying :) what do you usually use for creating art? I should watch more of your channel before I barrage you with questions 😄
That skull drawing is soooo good! Great advice in the video too!
Thank you 😊 i am make more videos like this in future ...stay connected

Yss sure their is a learning curve....but if you wannaa draw without any compromise you need more shades

True 👍🏻

I wonder about the drawing board in front of the cmputer screen... is it a huge wacom pencil drawing pad or just a wooden surface? thanks
It is just a wooden board which i covered in black cloth to give a clean look
