important to note that for games like bowling, though, the distance between a top-tier local amateur and a world champion will be a lot smaller than that gap for the larger, team sports, that have way more funding and people competing seriously.

Like others said, its for the glair on the lanes. The lanes arnt just wood, they coat them with a fairly thick layer of oil. So they are super thick and super shiny. Sometimes they pattern the oil too, so its bands or stripes or wavy lines. So that along with really bright lights, its hard to see your markers and thats no good. So you wear polarized glasses to combat that issue.

EXTRA CONTEXT FOR PEOPLE WHO CARE:
Here's what people here need to understand about Pete Weber.
He's an honest guy, and he's not afraid to say what bothers him. He's got an hour-long documentary on him, where he basically says "This is my place of work; don't f*ck with me in my place of work. Just don't piss me off, because if you piss me off when we're bowling, I will beat you."
He recently retired from the tour, which was quite unfortunate.
Edit: Actually what I just remembered about this tournament. This is the US Open, regarded as professional bowling's toughest event. Pete Weber had won 4 US Opens before this point, which tied his father's record of 4 US Opens. He started this event as the 5 Seed (which is the lowest seed on the show). Fast forward halfway through the first game, and he's losing. So out of nowhere, he just starts to piss himself off. People still aren't sure if someone in the crowd actually did something, or if he just invented some invisible person in the stands that made him angry. Either way, fast forwards to the end of the show. He needs a strike to win by one point, and he got a strike. All the emotion just blasted out of him at that point; he's normally fired up but that was something nobody had ever seen before.
Easily one of, if not the most popular bowling moment of all time.
    Extra extra context:
3:12 Jason Belmonte likes to sometimes play subtle mind games with people. In the middle of Sean Rash's first swing, Jason took a sip of water from a plastic water bottle (which obviously made as much noise as you can imagine). Sean noticed and stepped back to start his throw again, verbally upset as well. That was the next shot, they still don't like eachother today.
3:27 Someone basically went WOOWOOOWOOOWOOOO in the middle of his shot when he needed a strike to stay in the match. Concentration is absolutely key in bowling, and people (including myself) will absolutely get pissed off if you mess with their concentration. It's essentially the equivalent of yelling in the middle of a free throw at a high school basketball game.

"It's called Sportsmanship, pal!" - A man who has never shown sportsmanship in his life.
Also I was really hoping the crowd would just start screaming at him everytime he would go to bowl.

For a small bit of context on why the movement in the crowd was bothering him, those chairs are set up ON the lanes to his left, meaning they're out in front of him and directly in his peripheral vision when he's looking at where he's aiming, and keeping your eyes on your target board is really important for consistency. The guy in the crowd absolutely should have been moved after 3 interruptions. When you looked at the crowd dumbfounded because you couldn't see the person being a dick, its because the guy is ONLY doing anything during petes approach, he's waiting until pete is starting his swing then either making a noise or moving deliberately to make pete lose focus

“I’m such a pro bowler but if you move while I’m trying to bowl I won’t be able to bowl as well” The guy is preemptively blaming someone before he fucks up.

I'd never seen the full video, and I love hearing how even the announcers are baffled by this ghost battle he's fighting
