Wow, five 5* reads! That's awesome. I've only had 2 so far this whole year. Howard's End was a 5* for me when I read it. Also Snow Flower and the Secret Fan was a 5*. I read Dwan by Butler this month, which was not quite a 5, but still very good. I need to get to Parable of the Sower. I will definitely be adding The Lion Women of Tehran to my wish list.
It was a great reading month. I am definitely torn between 4 and 5 on Snow Flower and The Lion Women especially since they have similar vibes. Happy reading!
I can see why you thought that about Station Eleven. I just finished it on the weekend and loved it, but yes, some of those povs felt a bit shoe horned in particularly towards the end. It's definitely a book on my list to reread one day. Haven't got to Parable yet, really want too eventually.
The 90s adaptation of Howard’s End is highly recommended, it’s one of my favorites. Everyone says such amazing things about Octavia Butler but I’m so afraid to read her as I’m not sure I can mentally handle the stories!
I watched Howards End just after finishing the book. I already forgot as July felt like it was 6mos long! LOVED the movie. Regarding Butler I think Parable is much more doable then Kindred. Kindred, some how, is a much more brutal story. Parable isn't light hearted either, but I didn't feel as raw after reading it. It's definitely worth giving a try, but do be prepared.
Nice! 👏👏👏 I'm in awe of how much you can read in a month. Glad you found some new faves. My reading month was a little sluggish because I was mostly reading three slower reads: Vanity Fair 3.5 stars, A Passage to India reread 4 stars this read, and Jayber Crow 4.5 stars. I would most recommend Jayber Crow if you're in the mood for a slower plot and a thought provoking read. It has religious themes, but doesn't smack you with them. I also just finished James the other day, 4 stars. I really enjoyed it. All of the hype just made my expectations higher, but it's a great, plot-driven read.
Sounds like you had a pretty good reading month overall. Don't be too overawed. I wasn't working this month and my son was away for almost all of July. So I had excessive amounts of reading time and a few long drives for audiobooks.
I just finished a different book by Lisa See (Lady Tan) and felt the exact same way you did about the book you read. Now I must read it as well. Thanks.
Have you seen the 1992 movie of Howard’s End with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. Very true to the book and I liked it almost as much. Also a mini series in 2017 that was really good too.
I did watch the movie just after finishing the book. LOVE Anthony Hopkins, he played that part to perfection. The whole movie was good. I'll have to check out the mini series too.
So.... basically you're saying I need to buy an edition of Howard's end? Because for some strange reason it isn't in my inventory? LOL And I keep putting Parable of the Sower in a book cart online and people keep buying them! The nerve. I hope the sequel is just as thought provoking.
@@noteworthyfiction my library doesn't have either book. And I can't read books online. I'm limited in how I absorb books. But Gutenberg has her book? That's impressive.

Nice reading wrap up, Nicole! 📚 I had so much fun reading The Phantom Tollbooth. 🤩 It’s a new favorite MG book of mine. 😊
so glad u enjoyed it
Thank you for the "to the bright edge of the world" review. I loved the snow child and will go into this one with more tepid expectations now.
You're welcome. I think it was just a different story and feel (which isn't a bad thing), but I just really wanted more of the same. Happy reading.
That's an incredible amount to read in one month!
It was! Still not sure how I managed that.

I definitely think Station Eleven was a good book, so I can see why some love it. That said, if you liked it you'll also like Parable of the Sower.

You had a good month!
I did!!

Good to know. I will be adding the one you read to my list!

Ok you've convinced me... I need to read Howard's End 😂
Yes, you do. The audiobook was really fun too. Not sure which one I used but it had a female narrator.
I'm adding The Lion Women of Tehran to my list. I've heard a few people loving it so far. And it will help with my 5 different countries square!
Yes!! It's a great one for that pick. Good writing, important subjects, moving. Even if it's not a 5 star it's definitely a solid read.
To The Bright Edge of the World (Eowyn Ivey). I added it to WTR on GR so maybe I'll read it this year.
It's a good book and lots of people liked it better than I. Hopefully you'll be one of them!
There is an audiobook I highly recommend. It's Home by Julie Andrews. She narrates it herself and I really enjoyed it.
Thanks for letting me know. I added it to my TBR. I love a good audio memoir.

Yes, or the library, or project gutenberg. I too hope the sequel lives up to the original.
