    Nice project, When I did my rig I looked at a lot of options including total DIY.
    What I found was that overall I could buy the GT Omega art cockpit and with adding in some of the accessory packs available could configure a totally adjustable system that would do left or right stick and throttle, center stick with throttle or twin left, right stick for like space sims as well.
    Also all adjustments are easily changeable for height adjustment as well.
    This set up utilizes a fixed seat that can be adjusted forward or backward same as a car. I have the optional Art flightstick mounts, keyboard and mouse shelves plus I also have the separate single monitor stand.
    I built a platform on castors as well and the platform is less than 34" wide but built a little longer to include the monitor mount and the PC also is on the same platform which if I unplug 2 AC cords going to the power strips mounted on the rig the entire unit including the pc and monitor can be rolled wherever needed.
    Did I also mention that I do racing sims as well and this rig doubles as a racing sim rig as well! My steering wheelbase has a quick release for the wheel and by removing the steering wheel, sliding the seat back about 6" and installing the sticks/throttles in their respective quick release locations for whatever flight sim I am going to play does double duty for all of my sim needs.
    The pedals for the sim racing are mounted to the rig and the rudder pedals for the flight sim are on the platform closer to the seating position. This set up also works well as when you slide the seat forward for the racing rig the racing pedals are in the right location and position and when you slide the seat backwards for the flying position the rudder pedals are in a comfortable position to use.
    One thing that makes this system work as well for dual duty is the Virpil Ace Torque rudder pedals as they are a low profile set up and actually work more on an up and down action like a chopper collective setup rather than a forward backward motion like most airplane rudder pedals.
    Considering I am not an actual pilot in training the slight difference in the pedal movement makes absolutely no difference to me.
    Now someone not doing a dual flight/driving rig could incorporate whatever rudder pedals they wanted mounted to the rig.
    Really the only thing DIY this set up requires is building of the platform for mobility plus as I have advanced somewhat in age I prefer to have my rig higher off the floor than where the seat height would be sans the platform with the castors.
    Yes this type of rig cost a bit more but, in my opinion, looks better and for many that do not have the tools to build their own easily is by far a better solution.
    And yes I do have all the tools, saws and drill presses, sanders ect to do a full DIY if I had of to wanted or decided to go that route.
    My suggestion is for those wanting to do this style of rig for the least cost is to buy the rig sans seat and secure an automotive seat from a local wrecking to mount on the rig at a fraction of the price that GT Omega charges for a seat.
    Actually even an old office or gaming chair and a set of seat sliders to mount the chair to the rig from Amazon or Ebay mounted to the office chair could be used I guess.
    Also for those here in the U.S.A. the shipping for GT Omega is free or rather included in the price for their products and there are quite a few sources to find coupons usually for about a 5% discount as well.
    I have absolutely no association with GT Omega at all just a satisfied customer of their products over quite a few years staring years ago with their wheelstands and now with the Art cockpit and accessories.

    Fantastic Russ! Intersting project and something I can see myself mirroring if I get into VR in the future. At the moment I'm enjoying getting my teeth into programming/designing panels in Air Manager for my PMDG737 in FSX. I absolutely love the program and it is probably made the biggest improvement to my cockpit setup. Keep up the great videos!

    This is great. You really have an engineers mind Russ. I really like the modular approach as even if you think you don't need to move this or that as soon as you find yourself either wanting to branch out into flying something else, OR you simply find a new control device that you really want, you can easily swap out the pedestal or portion that won't work for a new one that will. I was thinking maybe flat magnets like for use in cabinets or such might also work in place of clamps, but I don't think they'd be strong enough. Another idea I thought of, while watching this, was maybe an old car seat (with track) would be a good way to mount it to the deck so as to be very stable yet allow for adjustment. The only thing is it would probably have to be from a truck or van to sit high enough for this application, but maybe not. I know some VR pilots have managed to dump their chair over while engaged in a tense dogfight. This is partly what made me think of it.
    I love the really creative fixed simpits people have come up with for multi-screen set-ups but they do require a designated and committed space devoted to that purpose. Well and they also are typically not very adjustable or modifiable for different loadouts for different air craft hardware. A simpit designed from the ground up for VR is definitely the way to go for anyone flying in VR at least primarily. This is very well thought out and I appreciate that you keep these things focused on accessibility and affordability as most of the really cool simpits I have seen certainly cost quite a bit in money and time to develop. Great job and thank you Russ.

    Nice job, Russ. Sadly I don't use Air Manager anymore because I now fly 100 percent in VR. I dismantled my C172 instrument panel after the basement flooded over a year ago as I hadn't used it at all in the prior year. Awesome video Russ! Man I have my eyes on the new HP Reverb G2 VR Headset! But that would be my last purchase for the new Microsoft Flight Sim 2020! I am still using a very old but also, a great working Saitek X-52 Pro HOTAS. I like the fact I don't have to purchase a yoke, a rudder, and a Throttle at an addition cost . It is all built in for the X-52, and I can also use it for Jets and Helicopters! So it is a do all HOTAS. Although not as realistic to having rudders, it is a good feel for me.

  • @MikeInExile

    Three years on and I guess I'm a bit late to the party! I'm actually thinking about duplicating your setup, but I have an idea/mod that might help others. I have the Thrustmaster TPR rudder pedals which I use for both fixed-wing _and_ helicopters. For fixed-wing aircraft, the TPR pedals can sit flat on the floor/platform. But for helicopters, they need to be mounted about 4-5 inches _higher_ . So in keeping with the modular theme of your setup, I'm going to add a platform for the rudder pedals that can be 'hot swapped' back to the normal height when I want to go back to flying fixed wing aircraft.

    Hey Russ! Thank you for posting this! I have been struggling with a starting point to build a flight sim cockpit for VR. I fly fighters in DCS and use pointCTRL for clicking the buttons, switches, etc in the cockpit. I am going to build one which will be a little more cramped so that when I use my hand to click, my fingers have something to touch. (It will make sense when I show you what I make). Any followups to this VR cockpit? I'd love to see if you made any changes etc. from lessons learned. (side note, if you haven't tried the HP Reverb 2.. you should!)

  • @gerryabbott

    Great project. Thanks for the inspiration. Its funny, i thought VR would eliminate the need for a dedicated cockpit, but VR actually cries out for one. Is there a way you can think of to tidy up the usb spagetti we all have from our devices. Wondering would a powered hub on the platform help? Also thinking spring loaded castors to, 'ground & brake' the platform, and spread the load on sensitive flooring.

    Hi Russ, thanks for this video it’s really informative. Can I ask which VR headset you use? Also do you have any opinion on the new Oculus Rift S?

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  5 лет назад +3

      Jack Y I have a Rift CV and recently got a Samsung Odyssey +. It was on sale for $299 and has a better resolution than the Rift but IMHO the sweet spot for the lenses is smaller than the Rift. For XP11 both work fine. From what I know only from other’s reviews the RiftS looks just great unless you have a very wide or narrow inter pupillary distance. Any eyeglass store tech can easily and quickly measure that for you. The Oculus Rift runs XP11 natively while Windows Mixed Reality headsets have to run it on SteamVR which adds another layer between the headset and XP11. It is awesomely me however you get intoVR simming.

    • @JYCrazy1
      @JYCrazy1 5 лет назад

      Russ Barlow Thanks for the helpful response! I will get the distance between my eyes measured as the Rift S looks great. I am a bit concerned about the resolution not being good enough for Boeing glass cockpits but I might take the plunge - really excited to experience VR for the first time!

  • @DAVIDK831109

    Looks awesome. I am still figuring out if I am gonna go for three monitor vs VR. In order to use three monitors I need stronger GPU something like 2080ti so beyond my budget coz I am using 2070 and its only 5~6month old. I might try VR like you did. Thanks for the info!

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  5 лет назад +3

      Actually I did both. I have a 1070ti on my 34 monitor setup and the 1070 on the VR. Both have pros and cons but I find myself doing more VR when I want to fly for fun. VR is not great for serious training now since interaction with switches and visual resolution are not quite there yet. The IMMERSION is AWESOME though.

    Great video. I have a 3 monitor flight sim with all the controls and I just bought a Oculus Rift S and use X-plane 11 with is. I found trying to use the VR controllers are really clumsy but watching your video it looks like you don't use them. My question would be how do you line up the VR view with your "manual" flight sim controls? I have yoke, pedals, power quadrant and trim wheel and would rather use them with the flight sim. Any suggestion would be great. Thanks Russ

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 года назад +1

      I do use the controllers but mostly only the right one for items like gear and flaps. For dials it is a real pain. I like the way you think. I think when hand tracking is ready you could construct the physical controls to match the VR view but then you could only support the one aircraft unless you had some way to re position the yoke and throttles form aircraft to aircraft. I do have a cool idea for using the Knobster in X-Plane 11 and will release a video on the new pluging by next weekend. Stay tunes.

    As you are a retired pilot what aircraft did you like flying the best Airbus or Boeing ?
    As for the VR setup what would you use for heli use for the collective as I like flying both fixed wing as well as rotary aircraft B429 or EC135/EC120.
    Can the VR setup be used for IFR practice?
    The setup looks very useful in regards to the space required, as I am currently looking at setting up sim for multiple type of aircraft . Glass avionics.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  5 лет назад +1

      Bevan Gibson If it ain’t Boeing I ain’t going 😃
      Never flew the Airbus so really can’t compare.
      Several good help hardware options but most aren’t cheap. I am going to try to build one in the future so keep an eye on my channel.
      VR currently not good for IFR training since resolution is not quite there and interaction with the controller on dials and switches is a pain. That will change in a few years.

    Well done Captain. I'll be bothering you with my project. I am waiting for a decision or what projects Microsoft and LevelD 767-300ER have. Well, I don't know why they haven't been active in generating a model or updating the LevelD 767 to the FSMS platform. Well, there are thousands of simmers involved in this project that was left in limbo. Well, neither LevelD nor Microsoft say anything about it. If you have direct access to this information, please dedicate a video to the lovers of 757 767. Thank you.
