Yep. It's simple. Pay is based on how much money your bring in, and how irreplaceable you are, and how well you negotiate your pay. Womens Gymnastics and ice skating are much more popular than the mens versions and generate more money and I would argue the women probably get paid more.

Their salary is proportional to the amount of money they bring in. If female athletes want to be paid more then they need to have a bigger draw. With the union you know that everything about your life is covered, were if you're non union, you're probably not going to get everything you need, and you don't know that until you need it. I worked at Home Depot for 2years and was surrounded by men all the time. Those men would negotiate to get free stuff or get lower prices. I learned that skill and use it to my advantage when I can. I went in for my current job and asked to get paid a dollar more. The manager hesitated but gave it to me. I had a coworker who was working there for 6 years and was getting the same amount that I was getting paid. I felt terrible but this teaches me to understand my worth and that negotiating is good. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that a lot more men watch sports compared to women. If the percentage of men that watched men and the percentage of women that watched women were the same, salaries would be similar. A lot of women don't care about sports and athletes in general. That said, women's sports is on the rise, and I think it will only be a matter of time before more women watch and play sports

If not that many people by the merchandise or buy tickets to see the athlete play, then they won't get nearly as much as someone who does.

ok if we are all being honest here and we compare male to female sports, you see a disparity. that is that male sports are much more popular, which in turn means they will take in more money since their league is taking in more money. You don't pay people the same if they are not on the same economic level
I worked at Home Depot for 2years and was surrounded by men all the time. Those men would negotiate to get free stuff or get lower prices. I learned that skill and use it to my advantage when I can. I went in for my current job and asked to get paid a dollar more. The manager hesitated but gave it to me. I had a coworker who was working there for 6 years and was getting the same amount that I was getting paid. I felt terrible but this teaches me to understand my worth and that negotiating is good. The worst they can tell you is "No".

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that a lot more men watch sports compared to women. If the percentage of men that watched men and the percentage of women that watched women were the same, salaries would be similar. A lot of women don't care about sports and athletes in general. That said, women's sports is on the rise, and I think it will only be a matter of time before more women watch and play sports

Athletes are paid by the number of viewers they bring in not just how good their skills are. A large athletic organization also takes into count of ticket sale, sponsorships, and merchandise sales. If not that many people by the merchandise or buy tickets to see the athlete play, then they won't get nearly as much as someone who does.

The USWNT does not bring in revenue nor draw in viewers anywhere near the level of USMNT, especially during the respective World Cups. It's as simple as that and there needs no further elaboration. The only way to bring their compensation up to par with men's is to either somehow bring in more viewers or as impossible as this option may be, do away with Women's World Cup and allow women to compete with men.
