    1: Dudes don't just go down in one shot. He hits them multiple times til they go down.
    2: Improvise weapons and using the environment to his advantage.
    3: It's over fast.
    While it's not the most realistic fight scene ever, these elements alone make it a more realistic scenario than most fight scenes in films. And that's no hate to a well choreographed fight scene (the Raid films have lengthy choreographed fights scenes, and they're two of my favorite films), but there's just something about the intensity and brevity of this fight scene that makes it special.

    • @MM-hk4pb
      @MM-hk4pb 2 года назад +16

      Agreed. It seems to have been the intention as well; to be well choreographed but as realistic as possible too. I was thinking almost the same thing after watching it in regards to the intensity and brevity of it as you put it. One of Nolan's best fight scenes are in Tenet imo and it shows that he still learns. Nolan has always liked to do that even though people can have complains about certain fight scenes in TDK trilogy which I understand mainly with TDKR. However, if we think about the mud scene in Batman Begins or club fight in TDK, it goes show his sort of realistic approach and it still transfers to his other films which I love. I also think Inception has well choreographed fights for the little amount it had like the foot chase with Cobb or the hotel fight. On the other hand, it's just that at some points in TDKR, for example, there are scenes (like rooftop one with Catwoman) that leave much to be desired (mediocre perhaps) when it comes to choreography for some reason although still not near being worse fights scenes for me as some people put it. I've seen wayyy worse and that's not it.
      The Batman though learned from what came before (TDK trilogy, Batfleck, etc.) and improved as much as possible in that arena if you ask me.
      Love The Raid films. Intricate in narrative (the second one mostly for me) as well despite having that much action. There are a lot of fight scenes in those films that seemed very complicated to choreograph so they deserve praise for such a feat.

    • @rnaD86
      @rnaD86 Год назад +6

      In all fairness, with some exception, the Raid films achieve this by throwing a metric fuckton of dudes upon the heroes; the individual mooks still go down pretty quickly.
      I suppose that's unrealistic in its own way, especially with all the blades in play; Rama shoulda been a tartar steak ten times over by the time final credits roll. I still love the Raid, although mostly the first one. Merantau is terrific too, and has a distinctly different vibe to most martial arts films (I think it's the human trafficking villains that give it a kind of real-world drama edge).

      realistic fight scenes are not good for story telling, because it doesnt have dramatic weight.. I mean i want some form of realism but certain things have to be deliberate...realism should only well be used if the intent of a scene is for shock, and visceral raw violence but never for a fight scene thats used as a sotry beat..that heing said, this fight works because..while it ends fast, it does make good use of its space and environment..in fact, i would prefer this fight over The Raid 1 end fight, because that fight lasted waaaayy too long, in just that single room..

    This is such a great fight scene. It's so unrefined and raw, compared to stuff like John Wick, and I appreciate that. Dude is just using whatever is lying around to beat on people. That little head roll before slamming the plates into the guy's face, using the doorframe to get a better kick, it's all great. Such a great action scene for the fact that it isn't this crazy elaborate mixed martial arts affair but instead it's just some dude beating the shit out of a bunch of guys with whatever's lying around the kitchen.

You also realize that modern tech does not have reverse functions like analogue tech did (ie you could put a VCR tape, or 8mm/16mm film and view backwards if you wanted to, but you can't do that on any streaming video. You can change the speed, but you can't change the direction)). That's a subtle ironic step-down from the classical analogue audio-visual formats.

But not only is he very skilled but also a very smart fighter, using surprise, deception and distraction tactics as well as being able to think and act quickly to his environment utilising objects around him as improvised weponds into his advantage despite being in a foreign environment. We don't know the protagonist's background, but it's clear he has very special training almost on par with Jason Bourne.

    This movie had its flaws, but damn.... this sequence is one of the most brutal fight scenes put to film. The choreography and film style speak for itself, but what really makes it work is that the Protagonist is an otherwise unassuming guy. He just doesn't look like he's capable of such brutal violence, especially when shown next to his assailants, which all conform to the Hollywood "badass" archetype . It also shows how intelligent his combat style is, making the best use of his surroundings to absolutely fuck these guys up. He's not standing on some advanced, showy martial arts style, It's just cold, calculated efficiency. Then there is his mannerisms, specifically at 1:34. You get a sense of how trivial this whole fight is to him, how he is almost annoyed that he has to go through the motions. While the others are scrambling to get at him, he is slowly and deliberately making his way down the corridor; an unstoppable force of nature moving through time.
    It's a shame they added those brief cuts to the dining room and the car, it has a negative effect on the pacing of the sequence. It's also a shame that you cannot even hear the dialog at the start of the scene, and yet the fight sound effects are close to blowing out my laptop speakers.

    Had to watch back this scene to compare with the kitchen fight scene on the new movie Monkey Man with Dev Patel and I gotta say, both characters used creative savagery plus the environment to their advantage. While The Protagonist uses a chesse grater to slide that guy's face off alongsode breaking his neck, Bobby from Monkey Man puts someone's head on the stove burning them, then breaking a bottle of hot sauce on the sauce, amplifing the stove to burn his face more from already hot face to scorched face, killing him. The creativeness of a kitchen fight was amazingly well-done for both movies as a whole.

      I also find both kitchen fights creative and varied. Here the scene with the cheese grater and the destruction of this young guy, in Monkey Man the scene with the sauce on his face and how the other guy falls into the microwave and falls lifeless to the ground. There's another good scene with Jason Statham in the movie Mechanic Resurrection. Not in the kitchen, but at the grill. A villain is also placed on the grill and you can see the grill grate crumbling in his face.

    John David Washington is fucking badass. I love his physicality and presence. I BELIEVE that he beat the shit out of everyone. He is CRIMINALLY underutilized in the action genre.
