I found that when you have a camera and start taking pictures it's fun and not with the phone anymore, unless it's the only thing in my bag at the moment.
I picked up my Epic Zoom 80 DLX, a couple of weeks ago, at a thrift store, for probably less than 5 bucks. Then I realized it was the 80 and thought I wasted my time and pocket change. Thanks for showing me that it's every bit as good for a fraction of the price. I now feel confident with it in my change less pocket.
with any camera i think it will ultimately come down to the person behind it; not the camera itself. with such similar cameras you can see that the photos on the left most of the time come out looking better just by the way the pictures are framed when taking them. great video !
i found a zoom 80 hidden in the back of the electronics area at a thrift store for $3! currently shooting a roll of kodak 200 in it and i can’t wait to finish it to see the results :)
I've often wondered whether it was true that the Mju ii with the prime lens was really better than the zoom version. Judging by the samples, I think the Mju ii renders colours better and the images seem to have more contrast. The Mju ii is way more expensive and I wouldn't spend the type of money people are asking for them, but I often see them at garage sales and thrift shops for under $10 cdn (about £5 ). Thanks for another great video Richard.
@@carmentan1 ive had 4 mju i's and gave 3 away. depends what your looking for in a camera I guess, for me they are too small and have lots of lag. But they are great to have in your pocket. I picked up mine at local charity shops and car boot sales for a song. I have not tested the Mju I against the mju ii to see what the lens difference is like
Save the money and get the zoom 80. Easy to replace if they break and you won't care if it gets scratched up. It allows you to focus more on the photography than the camera.
Just got the mju ii zoom 80 for $17 bucks on my local thrift shop, I thought the result will be significantly different but after i see some of the result from your video actually i prefer more the picture that the mju ii zoom taken better, well then good video btw!
Vicky Sofyan hi and I'm glad it helped 😊 Yeah I had wondered how much better the MJU II would be over the zoom and was surprised. I have a few more of these videos I want to make as they are fun challenges. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Hope you get some great shots 😊👍
Back in the day I had Mju II (sadly it's been stolen) and what that camera made possible for me is to shoot concerts at night, if used with films of ISO 800 or 1600, and if spot meter had been used.
As for the question "Why?" to the flash being on by default, is because I think they assumed people (amateurs) would be shooting in poorly lit situations. Especially like in the shade or indoors and so on and so forth. So I think they wanted to bet on people not getting poorly lit or blurred images or anything like that. - The way "we" would use it today is to get more thought out and nicer shots, so it baffles and annoys us. It's not that I disagree that it's kinda silly, but that's just my thinking about it if I had to guess why. - I find it weird that it still goes off on Auto when you're in plenty of light. I don't think my Mju-1 does that. And I also wonder if it changes with the ISO.
Not sure why the zoom models seem to be 'worth' less now, originally the zoom models cost a lot more than the none zoom models. I have the mju II and the mju II zoom 170 out of both I prefer the zoom because it has far more flexibility and that zoom is crazy long! I have a review of the mju II zoom 170 on my channel, also from nottingham so recognised a lot of the locations! BTW I paid less than £10 for my zoom 170 when digital photography was getting popular, these 35mm point and shoots were going for next to nothing, nobody wanted them! Bought my mju II way back in the 1990s brand new from Argos, I seem to remember it was £99 or round that amount? I added your channel, hopefully you'll connect?
Hi thank you and thank you for watching :) I have not come across that camera before, will have to check it out. The track is from the RUclips music library as is all of my music in my videos (I hate searching for music lol) it is called "trips" by Topher Mohr and Alex Elena, hope that helps :)
not sure if im seeing things but some of the images from the mju zoom have a light flare in the corners. happened to a few of my other olympus zoom p&s. regardless, still beautiful results!
As I'm new(ish) to RUclips I thought I'd give your old videos a watch. I have definitely seen your video skills improve! I have the MJU II and it's perfect for slipping in a bag or pocket when travelling or on a night out but it is definitely overpriced and overhyped now!
The MJU-2 was sold in the US for about $85. I bought two at the same time (one black and one champagne) around 16 years ago Still work. They take nice pics but they weren't intended as serious cameras to replace an SLR or rangefinder. It was literally a point and shoot. But I find it crazy to spend a lot of money for it.
Hi Richard, nice shots and great video as always! It really was an interesting comparison! I have to admit that, from my perspective and on my little Iphone screen 📺, the color rendition of the mju II looks better to me. But it is a bit of an unfair challenge because it is much easier to create a great prime lens than a zoom lens. Especially if space is so limited. It would be interesting to test the mju II against the mju! Both prime lenses are great, the one in the mju II has a larger aperture but that says nothing about sharpness and color rendition. Great job, anyway!
Klaus Tiburski yeah I may do that I have a MJU I so could shoot another vs video. The MJU II was better but not the crazy price difference better. What I did find and not sure if it was just my copy, but the zoom gave these strange circles in the corner of the images 😞 thanks for your feedback, always great to get other people's perspectives and help to where I can improve myself 😊👍
Hi Tim, most of my videos are filmed with just the Canon G7x mkII now because of auto focus. At the start of this channel and all of the unboxing clips are filmed on my Canon 6D with 24-70 mkII, but that doesn't do auto focus. The major downside of the G7x is the lack of better audio
I think the difference is pretty negligible at most times - particularly for a price difference of 4-5x the original! That said, I think you can tell a little bit that the ZOOM has a slightly slower speed and is more culpable to being slightly blurred. I've certainly seen that with my MJU ZOOM (mju-i not ii) unfortunately.
Cool video and big up Notts. Just bought a mju zoom for £15 off ebay whereas the mju ii seems to go for £150. Yet to put a roll through it but i think i made the right choice.
Supreme Clientele yeah the MJU prices are crazy and no idea why. Yes you get slightly better/sharper images, but in the right light so does the zoom. £15 is not a bad price, just hope it doesn't suffer with the same issue as mine. That is light leaking around the lens, I get funny circles in the corner of my images 😞 Are you from Nottingham then?
Yeah ive seen that in a few reviews of the camera, im gonna try and not zoom in too much! Spent 3 years in Nottingham for uni. Subscribed to your channel btw mate keep doing what you're doing.
Supreme Clientele thanks, much appreciated and I really hope you enjoy the MJU zoom. I think I'm going to sell mine, one thing I didn't mention in the video was I keep turning it off in my hand as it's just the slide cover and the resets the flash 😞 I have lots more compact cameras I need to review/test, so will do more challenge videos 👍
I got lucky and found a zoom version in the local ads for around a tenth of what the fixed lens version goes for. One of them is clearly priced very wrong indeed, and my zoom version is a superb camera :-)
I'm a heathen because I think the less perfect the picture is, the better it becomes for me. I own the zoom which I love a lot. They're still way overpriced like the majority of analogue is these days. How can anyone warrant paying for kit that's that old when it could only last five minutes?
Luckily I didn't, I got my MJUII for £10 from a charity shop. But yes they are over priced for what they are and how they shoot. Not sure why they got a cult following, like other small compacts. I much prefer the Pentax 6x7 as a camera and a format. I would love a Mamiya RZ67 ProII, but they are daft money these days. Hope your good?
Oh I didn't pay for it. It was given in a bundle from a house clearance but this was when they were...... A tenner from a charity shop and probably about 15 off ebay.
I think they became popular with the skate community and students who wanted that quick shot genuine analogue vibe. The lens as well was the best on a P&S.
Considering that the whole series is nothing more than minimal snapshot cameras, this video has all the attraction of comparing an Ansco plastic 110 with a Kmart plastic 110. People who buy them in junk shops for $5 are getting their money's worth. Hypsters who pay $100 are themselves the joke.

Decided buy a zoom80 after this, thank you for the video!
okay for the price compared to the MJUII, just a little slow on the shutter, well they both are lol
@@RICHARDROLLINSONDESIGNPHOTOGRA thanks for reply

So the pictures on the left(zoom) are all taken with a flash?!
so which camera is the picture on the left? and which one for the right
It is that one

dope video and both of them make some super dope shots!
Hi Richard - great video! I recently got an Olympus Stylus Epic Dlx. What's that tune that plays at 1:51?

Hi I would like to know which is which in the sample images? as they aren't labeled.. thanks
zoom is on the left i believe

I’ll buy the black one from you if you’re interested in selling it 😁
is the champagne one on sale possibly?
The mju II is epic 😝😝😝 that was a bad joke... great video loved watching this

Richard Rollinson - My Analog Life my pleasure, your input helps me as well !
What film do you use for the zoom 80?
Hi Richard, what do you shoot the B+W video segments with?

kinda like that everything is in black and white
class vid! just what i needed to find out

mju ii stylus epic. left was the zoom 80
b&w video is annoying. which picture is wich? left/right?
Kinda late but it the begging it says zoom is left

Is there any noticeable size/weight difference between the two?
