  • For section hike number 21 on the AT, and the last hike of this season, I head down to Georgia! I'm finally tackling the southernmost portion of the trail, starting at Springer Mountain, the southern terminus, and making my way through a portion of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In this episode, travel from Slaughter Creek campsite to Sassafras Gap. This video covers days 3-4 of the trip.

    Hello! My name is Dale and I'm in Virgjnia. Just was watching random AT videos and stumbled on yours. Just wanted to share a 'the trail provides' story since you touched on that in this video. I did 800miles in 2014, and as we neared the 'cheesecake factory' camping area early on, I stopped short of there because a fellow hiker had a campfire going. I had just enough food left for a small dinner and a bar for breakfast, then later in the morning I knew I would resupply. But, I knew I wanted more to eat than I had. As I prepared to make dinner, the guy with the fire going told me and our friend to check out what he had. It was a package of brats, buns, apostle of BBQ sauce, a bag of ice and a 6pk of beer! He said he was gonna set there and eat til he couldn't eat anymore, but he wanted to share it with us! The 3 of us stuffed our faces and I went to bed absolutely stuffed! The trail provides! The pic of us cooking the brats over the fire on sticks we grabbed in the woods still is the Screensaver on my phone 9years later. I love the AT, the trail angels, meeting folks, and doing trail magic myself is always so fun. Thanks for sharing your videos. It's cool to see the trail in videos at different times of the year! Happy hiking!

    I really like how you identify the flora and fauna that you film -- I don't think many hikers could do that, and I have never seen it on YT before. It adds to the experience of watching for me, for sure. Just subscribed.

      Welcome aboard! Thanks so much. I used to only label a few things that I knew, but now I'm finding that I love learning what everything is. If I don't know what it is already, I look it up so I can learn and also share it with the viewers :)

    I’m already enjoying this section at a different time of the year. I definitely prefer more solitude on the trail than a mass of hikers. One of the reasons I think if I ever attempt a thru hike it would likely be SOBO. Great video, as usual Flower. Happy trails. 🤘🏻🥾⛰️

    We just hiked that same section and got trail magic water and the same bag was hanging from a bear cable at low gap shelter and we got meals and also left some of our snacks for upcoming hikers!

    I've hiked 1/4th the AT(almost all of it south of Harper's Ferry) and I was always looking for copperheads or rattlesnakes. Never saw one. I'm convinced I walked right by them and they didn't compute. Same way with bears.

      Did you do GA/NC by yourself? I do tons of day hikes alone & am planning this section hike in May. It makes me a little nervous to be alone out there.

    • @loamseeker5230
      @loamseeker5230  Год назад +1

      Yes, I was solo. Don't be nervous...you'll do great! Is there anything in particular you're nervous about?

    • @db.mc2
      @db.mc2 Год назад +1

      @Robin McLeod Ingram Always be prepared, for weather, dependable light source, shelter, in case you need it, first aid. Always carry some type of protection, and GPS with ability to communicate if you don't have cell service. Also Always let someone, a family member, close friend, know where you are , where you're headed. Trust your instincts, you see or pass someone on trail that doesn't feel right , get out of that area quick, and contact someone. Stay safe and take care my friend 🙏👍

      That's exciting! I just use the Appalachian Trail Thru-hikers Companion book (can find on amazon). I just make copies of the sections I'm currently on, and keep the pages in a sandwich bag in my pocket :)

    how do you charge everything? and the elevation paper maps?

    • @loamseeker5230
      @loamseeker5230  5 месяцев назад +1

      I use an Anker portable battery charger...it can usually power up my phone for about 5-6 days (and I drain my phone battery throughout the day filming stuff). If I'm out on trail longer than that, I have to go into town or a hostel to recharge it. The elevation maps are from the Appalachian Trail Thru-Hiker's Companion guide book (found on Amazon). I just copy the pages that I need for a particular section hike.

    • @preacher1511
      @preacher1511 Год назад

      Wow, not a hiker, I see. It's not a nickname, it's a trail name. Most thru hikers have them, usually just something that describes you in some way. And very few give out their real names, mostly for security.

    why would they put food in a shelter to attract bears?! grrrr

    • @loamseeker5230
      @loamseeker5230  8 месяцев назад +1

      I imagine they expect the food will be taken by hikers in a relatively short time, and no doubt if anybody spent the night there, they'd hang the bag properly before sleeping. Just my guess tho
