Please look into Tom’s Restaurant in Prospect Heights. It’s been around since 1936, making it one of the oldest diners inn the city. They’re know for their pancakes and flavored butters. My fav is the Pastrami & Eggs, the pastrami rivals Katz’s

Astoria has great diners. You should try Jackson Hole (featured in Goodfellas) and also Michael's. Both are awesome. Jackson Hole has NYCs best burger!

Someone already suggested the Jackson Hole diner in Astoria. Great Burgers but my favorite breakfast there is their Western Omelette. They are huge and come with home fries (of course). And yes you can see photos from the filming of Goodfellows. They have booth seating with your own juke box. Last stop on the W or N train then a short walk down Astoria Blvd to heaven!

As a southern boy born and raised in SC, I lived and worked in the greater NYC area for almost 15 years (lived in Westchester County and was in and out of the city at least 5 to six times a week). I embraced the whole suburban/urban NYC/Tri State lifestyle and considered myself a true New Yorker. I moved back to SC in 2003 but hardly a day goes by when I'm not slightly homesick and nostalgic for my beautiful NYC, it's atmosphere, architecture, neighborhoods, culture and especially the food. What I probably miss the most are the independent (usually Greek owned) local, traditional diners. No matter what time of the day or year, wherever you are, there is a warm, inviting (sometimes gruff) local diner with strong hot coffee (iced in the summer), breakfast 24 hrs a day, usually a full cocktail bar 24/7 and a somewhat encyclopedic menu of Greek, Italian, American and Jewish specialties. This post illustrates all of these things and more and brings back so many wonderful memories. Love your channel and watch it often - thank you!

Try Jackson Hole Diner in Astoria/East Elmhurst off of Grand Central Pkwy near LaGuardia Airport.
Ben's comment about his dish tasting like Jollibee shows his young age. American diners preceded Jollibee, not the other way around. Also, Jollibee is what Filipinos think American food is with their menu of fried chicken, burgers, fries, "spaghetti", etc.
New Jersey has great diners and many. Yes, I'd like to see a video of it, and perhaps, invite Mary Jane again and Adriana to the food tour so you can try several dishes.

Bravo Mary Jane ! And Long live the American Diner. 24/7, especially the midnite to 8 am shift keeps the USA on the road rollin'. A haven for the cops, firemen, emts, trucker, taxi drivers, and weary motorist travelers to find a cup of coffee, good meal, clean restroom, and a pitstop to rest while on a long haul. Many thanks to the Greeks for founding contributions to this industry. Those 8 oz takeout paper coffee cups are adorned with columns and images of the old time dieties against a background of blue and white, the colors of the Greek national banner, celebrating the grace and beauty of their women and strength and dynamism of their men while cooking at the hot grill, cleaning the greasy spoons, and offering hospitality to one and all. Thanks Here Be Barr.

Went here for breakfast on the 2nd morning (had to have bagels on the 1st morning) and because the staff were so nice and the food was enjoyable, we went back for the 2nd visit on our penultimate morning and sat in that exact seat you guys are in. OMG take me back. Best week ever and seeing this just makes me want to visit again.

Big Nick's Burger & Pizza Joint on Bway and 76 st was the best diner I ever are it. Terrific food, good prices and an enormous menu. I really miss it. RIP Big Nick, our friend. Everyone who ate there knows what I mean. He came to my girl friend's opening art solo show and he used to give us free deserts. I made CD's for him of 50's rock n roll that he played all the time in his restaurant.

Coming from a LI perspective, nothing speaks more diner than the Greeks. Beautiful people, delicious food, 10 pages of whatever you'd imagine. For me it was either, breakfast (eggs/omelet hashbrowns/homefries both great, either involving bacon and melting cheese, aka American), cheeseburger deluxe, or a giant salad. One of the greatest matzoh ball soups I enjoyed at the diner. Guiltily I never delved into the specials which I'm sure would've been amazing, that was due to timing and $ constraints. You can't go wrong with a solid meal at a diner on a budget, you simply can't.
When you say diner, I think Greeks👉 ❤️❤️❤️🤗👍

Another really good food video John, put a smile on my face. As mentioned before didn’t think you had done this type of restaurant food before and it is Classic American fare that tourist associate the US with. We simply don’t have these in the UK or Europe. Shame they are dying out a bit but hopefully they keep going and when tourism comes back on storm more people will go to them. Good you showed a variety of slightly different diners to. Had never heard of the TikTok diner before. There not places you want to go to all the time but for a once in a while visit they are worth doing. Would be interested in seeing a New Jersey video on these. Going back to your roots so to speak.

I still love diners. Only problem I see here in CA is that the quality of the food has declined drastically while the prices have gone up a lot. It gets harder and harder justifying going there when you can get a gourmet breakfast for the same price somewhere else!

I can empathize with your statement about taking diners for granted. Being from the tri-state area, I've eaten at many a diner in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. One of my first questions when I moved to Texas was, "any good diners around?" which was met by a blank stare. They don't have Greek-owned diners here. Oh, they have cafes, which are okay, but it's not the same. One question I've always had is, what's with the Greeks and diners? They all seem to be similar and have pretty much the same menus. Why is it primarily Greeks who own and run them? Do they have some kind of culinary school in Athens that gives courses on running an American diner? 🤠

    • @andrewmichaels5725
      @andrewmichaels5725 2 года назад +4

I will try to answer your question to the best of my knowledge. I am Greek American but I was fortunate enough to grow up in Greece. There are two factors that come into play. Growing up in Greece there is this mentality (factor #1) that owning a restaurant business or a café is viewed as a sign of success. Hence, everyone strives to become a restaurant or café owner, similar to becoming a doctor or a lawyer which is also viewed very favorably in Greece. That mentality still holds strong in the USA amongst Greek-Americans. But obviously that is not enough to explain the all American Diners. Why would so many Greeks focus on American food rather than just simply sell Greek food like other immigrants in the likes of Italians and Mexicans have been doing for generations? As a nation of immigrants since the antiquity, it is in our DNA (factor #2) to adapt and adjust to the cultural norms of our new home. We take pride in that. We want to learn the language and fit in 1000% while maintaining our ancestral culture and heritage at home. Therefore, back to your question what's up with the Greeks and diners? Firstly, we love running restaurant businesses, it's every kid's dream and secondly, we love American culture and we want to be part of it. When you try to marry up the two, you've got your self an All American Diner in every corner of this country where Greeks live.

OK, here are my favorites, apologies if some of them are cliché:
Lexington candy shop on the upper east side: The food is OK, but it feels about as old as it is, it’s great.
Broadway restaurant on the upper West side: such a great low-key vibe, and it’s one of the last remaining diners that is still affordable, the food is also pretty good. Just has a great neighborhood feel about it.Conversely, Brooklyn diner in Midtown, bland food, and ridiculously overpriced. Spent $100 not including tip/tax for breakfast for three… It’s diner food for chrissake!
Tom’s diner: the Seinfeld restaurant, the food sucks… But the ice cream is actually really really good. So good that sometimes I go there despite the tourist aspect.
Ritz diner on the upper Eastside: honestly, I just love people watching at this diner, it’s always hectic and busy, and there’s usually a nice mix of suits, socialites, and workers existing in the same space. Also, my dog is extremely sick, so I always go there while he is being worked on at the nearby animal medical center…
Community food and juice in Morningside Heights: not a traditional diner, but everything I’ve had there is great: the breakfast, mac & cheese, burgers, and quite possibly the best flourless chocolate cake…
I lived in New Jersey for about 3 1/2 years, and their diners are great, but I much prefer urban diners. The energy is just different, and I don’t drive… So it’s nice to just walk or take the subway to them
Oh also, like three years ago friend and I got extremely drunk in the village, and ended up having a delicious shake at some random diner near the 14th St. path station… I cannot for the life of me remember the name of that place for obvious reasons! But that place was a lot of fun, and I don’t think it’s just because of the alcohol…

Appetizing diner reviews!! Hope diners are not a dying breed. If you get the chance, check out the Square Diner in Tribeca..not as fancy as what you reported, but you get a Square meal at a Square price.

If anyone wants to experience THE authentic, untouched NYC diner experience, they should go either to Lexington Candy Shop or Eisenberg’s, both in Manhattan. Eisenberg’s has not changed in 100 years. Unfortunately, it just closed down during the pandemic. I am praying it will re-open.

The egg creams at Lex Candy Store are to die for. Sit at the counter. Also, Georgia diner on Queens Blvd is my favorite. Cheers.

There are some great Diners in the Bronx. National Diner Westchester Square. The Diner in Throgg Neck Bruckner Blvd. The Diner across the street from Lehman High school. You should come check them out.

My fav diner is Times Square. It’s a small cozy spot with great food.
If you are ever in the dc area check out silver diner. It’s an elevated modern style diner with the old school look.

Great vid. Even more excited for May now! Got the first 2 jotted down and will definitely be going there (especially late at the 24/7 one after a rooftop bar)! Thanks for your vids - really helpful!

Honestly, Queens often feels like a perfect diner destination. Bel-Aire Diner is just the surface of this

Last time I was in New York, I stopped by a diner in the evening for a coffee and slice of cheesecake. That is the diner experience in NYC.

I saw that dancing skeleton guy at Times Square Station last week. Personally, I found it repulsive, yet I couldn't tear my eyes away...

Growing up on the West Coast, we rarely had the true Diner experience available with the classic railroad car look, booth seats and long bar.

Yet another well executed video Jon. You definitely have the pulse of New York. Being in South Florida, diners are far and few between, and don't hold a candle to the quality of food you get in the northeast. Keep up the good work, and all the best to the family. Your friend Mike in Florida.
