#segagenesis #Segamegadrive #shmups This is my review of Thunder Force II for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Kirgeez's Channel: / kirgeez Twitter: / megadrivepro
Well, just as I said on Kirgeez's channel about 2 months ago, I always had a soft spot for the early Mega Drive titles and Thunder Force II is one of my favorites among those but it tends to be underrated. People usually prefer TF3 or 4 which is understandable (they have better presentation and more accessible gameplay) but I personally love TF2 about as much. That late 80s charm, the alternation between overhead and side scrolling sections, the frantic pace... it's plain awesome. And this game is also underrated compared to the X68000 original version. Sure the Mega Drive port dropped a few things (the intro, a few stages...) which is mostly due to cartridge size restrictions at the time but it also made several tweaks such as a better aspect ratio (320x224 vs that odd 256x256 resolution that the X68000 uses), a better sprites to scenery ratio (the proportions feel more coherent) or the added scoring mechanics at the end of each sublevel. An underrated port of an underrated game! I rate it 87%. edit: 6:25 the Mega Drive has the best and most badass sound ever! BTW I didn't know that it's the Tecno Soft's gals who did the voices in this game. Cool infos! And the voices are dope AF. Sexy and futuristic. Yuuuuum.
I'd say the gameplay on the MD is so much better than the X68000 original. X68k even on easy feels literally like bullet hell and overhead's ground missile doesn't hit consistently.
This game was available day 1 for Japanese Mega Drive owners along with Altered Beast, Super Thunder Blade and Space Harrier2. There’s a lot of very good ideas in this game as regards stage and enemy pattern design. You need to complete two loops to face the final boss which is a large craft you move around. It’s the most difficult game in the series, I’d say. Loosing all your weapons and power ups with every death is tough.
One of the first MD games I played back then, still a fun game with a great OST. Top down levels would be better with speed controls and basic maps. Had no idea about this rare case of swedish censorship, lol. I actually owned the US version of the game, my dad bought it on a trip and it worked being an earlier game and owning the model 1 console.
Oj, I must check to see if I have the non-violent Swedish version! Since I find the initial top down stage frustrating to play, that level select code should come in handy.
I wish they would remake or re-release the first game on the Nintendo Switch, so fans could finally have all five games, and in handheld form at that. I love Bosconian, and I seek out any game that offers that kind of gameplay. Unfortunately, such games are few and far between.
@@MegaDriveProfile Metal Stoker is an awesome game - I have it on my NES Classic Edition. Some other fun games that scratch the Bosconian itch, apart from the obvious Thunder Force II, are Time Pilot (arcade), Time Pilot '84 (arcade) and Granada (Mega Drive).
Kinda bad though, I looked up a review because I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be doing in the first level, the game gives you no indication of a mission or tracking targets remaining.

Always Enjoy all your videos great stuff and Thunder force 2 is one of my favourite 👍👍👍👍
I really like how you go into the sound design and music in your videos. Thanks for working on this channel! My favorite console and old school sound!
Appreciate it, I love audio in games. Well done sound is just as important as the gameplay in my eyes.
@@MegaDriveProfile absolutely. Right on, man.
Ah the red headed step child of the series. Im probably the minority but i actually like the overhead levels.
Wow always learning something new. Didn't know anything about Technosoft other than the games. Nice work..:)
Thunder Force II is the best game in the series, and one of the top ten games on the SMD.
Definitely Agree 👍
I've played the crap out of Thunder Force 3 & 4, but yet to check this one out...and I just bought a copy. lol Great vid as always my dude! :D
Thanks and enjoy it. I think it should be in every genesis fan's collection
@@MegaDriveProfile Nice! Can't wait to give it a shot! :D

Yes! I knew you'd do it eventually!

@@theycallmejpj 7? I'm pretty sure there's only 6 Thunder Force games.
What's the game at 2:58?
Thunder Cross II
From what game is the whip guy at 0:19? And the gun duo at 0:27?
0:19 this particular clip is from Annette Futatabi on Mega CD
0:27 is from Rolling Thunder 2 on Mega Drive
@@MegaDriveProfile Thx, I'm gonna check those out.
