I didn't know the Mrs was a quali'y seamstress! She could SELL Victorian wear to us viewers. I would love to purchase a Victorian suit from a Victorian home from a Victorian soul. And I forget how beautiful that grand staircase was. And that there was a bathroom underneath. It's great to see things you don't have to change and that bathroom looks like one of them. Also, didn't know you could insulate in such clever and cost-effective ways. I need to note that one.
As a seamstress, I can tell you a Victorian suit is a LOT of work and will require fittings. She might not want to spend that amount of time making clothes for others.
A little Dawn dish soap in water would probably take that dirt off the siding. If it's dull finish it won't shed dirt like high gloss will. Love the wall paper in the half bath. Very period looking.
If you have poplar or pecan trees,, the stains may be tree sap on the house, not just dirt. Good old soap and water and a soft scrub brush!!!! Happy Thanksgiving.
Busy episode, a little of this and a little of that. We live in a modern house but it wasn't well built so we actually have to put plastic on some of our windows in the winter. We need to replace the windows but, well, you know priorities. Gotta say, love that wood work in the half bath.
Hpe you won't think I'm a know-it-all, but the fireplace columns with the scrolls are Ionic style. Doric columns are more simple. The third main style is Corinthian, which is the most decoated.
Pretty Dress! :) I can't wait to see the next one too. I hope the winterizing of the windows works well, and keeps your house nice and warm this winter. I know people used to do that when we lived in Colorado too. Anything that helped keep that cold out was a blessing! You asked what those loops were that held back the curtains. We call them Tie Backs. I'm not sure if there is another name for them. You can buy pretty metal tie backs too..although, they don't really "tie" anything, they just hold the curtains back. Sorry about your seeds. Hopefully next year you'll have better luck with them. I think it's a nice idea to share them with others who would love a beautiful tree in their yard as well. Thank you for the interesting and educational video this week.

Oh gosh, back in the 80's this Texan moved to Cincinnati and had zero experience with below zero weather. We lived in an old house and used plastic on the windows, though, it was thinner and we used a blow dryer to basically shrink wrap the front of each window. It saved us a lot of money on the heating bill for sure.
The 'railroad track' design on the fireplace mantel is called "Dentil" moulding...yes, like teeth. At least that's my guess since I didn't see it up close. A standard design often found along the roof line of Greek temples. Our house is not that old, but our bedroom (with a flat roof, and only one common wall with the rest of the house) is normally 5 to 6 degrees hotter or colder, depending. 62F this morning, though the rest of the house was 68F with the furnace on. Lots of quilts, lol. Our living room has a 102 inch window along the side, and two 24 inch windows at the end, one on either side of the fireplace. Since we open them often, I bought floor length rubberized thermal liners, which hang separately inside our long velour drapes. Our lows get to maybe 24F, though mostly they hover between 35 and 40 in winter. Great Victorian coat; Bernadette Banner is quite the inspiration, no? I like the new intro music. :)

You can purchase clear plastic film specifically made for windows. After installing it, you heat it some with a hair dryer which causes it to become taut, eliminating most of the wrinkles.
Wishing you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving. I remember commenting on how my oven wasn't getting hot enough and I asked Mike what he thought it may be, and I thought it may be the element. I had to threaten them with being very upset and how would they like their holiday ruined. Kind of have to get a bit owly to get people to get things done.
That's quite the sewing job on the dress! How many yards of fabric did it take? I've tacked up winter window plastic in so many of the old houses I've lived in. Very glad that my Dad put good tight windows in this house when he built it! Those seeds must have been wet when you put them into the bucket. To preserve them next year you'll have to dry them out properly first. Much snow here, in Southwestern Ontario. Some people are getting a LOT more. You're lucky where you are. Enjoyed spending a bit of my Friday evening with you two! Cheers M&J! Marian 🇨🇦
When talking about your windows the first thing I thought about was to use visqueen (plastic sheeting). During the '80's I had friends stationed at an Air Forse base in England where they rented a house that was built around the 1940's or before and said the windows leaked like a sieve. My friends decided to put plastic around the windows and the locals thought they were "crazy Yanks". However, whenever the locals visited they noticed how much warmer the house was and decided the Americans weren't so crazy after all. BTW, I just Googled how magnolia seeds are harvested. Apparently it is recommended to lay them out to dry them but they need to be spread out so air can circulate around them. OK, so I guess no more buckets. 😲
They sell a clear plastic film that after putting on the window frame with the supplied tape, you heat shrink. Depending on how you've applied it you may not need to remove it for years. It makes a HUGE difference. I found you can put holes for roller blinds brackets and curtain rods by putting clear packing tape on to reinforce those spots. I've always stuck the tape to the sides not the face of the window frames. After you have it on the window, a hair dryer makes the film shrink and it becomes crystal clear. It comes in various sizes. I also used the same film to build a couple inside storm windows because the built in bookcase tops were the sills and I had no place to put tape and not worry it would pull finish later. Just stretched the film over a wood frame and slid that into the window opening. With the clear film made to seal windows you have a CLEAR cover. The tape along the outsides of the frame is also transparent and your windows look basically normal and you can still see out of them just fine.
I remember our first place here in Washington. We had an old duplex. Every winter we use plastic on our old aluminum windows. Great tip to pass along. It really helps. Sorry to here about the seed. Wonderful idea, look for it next year. Loved seeingthe finished dress, but that coat was fabulous. Did you make it? Had to comment on it. Enjoy your Thanksgiving. 🦃❤️🤍💙
I always love seeing that old paint being removed and revealing the gorgeous wood underneath. I hope you can figure out what is causing the dirt buildup on the exterior paint, I guess it's a good thing you did that small area before painting the entire house.
The 2nd Empire Strikes Back sent me here, and I'm finally all the way caught up on this house! Thanks for the excellent content. I've learned a lot from you and have been applying what I can to my own 1906 farmhouse restoration. Cheers!
I love the dress Jeanie; colors of fall and your coat is just beautiful. Did you make it? Wish I could sew! Too bad about the magnolia seeds; would have to have a large property for that tree
See the door in the background at timestamp 9:00? It's got an old-fashioned doorbell on it and only time I've ever seen one that was on a door it was missing so you really have something there. I bet it still works.

Such a beautiful home. Boo on the Magnolia Seeds, I was hoping to get a few from y'all, oh well maybe next year ! Hope y'all have a good Thanksgiving !
I enjoy the bits and pieces added in concerning everything old like sewing, canning, and gardening. Sharpening that tool really made a huge difference! Looked easier. How many bedrooms have the painted wood and how many were left alone? Your staircase area is absolutely beautiful!! One possibility that you might look into concerning the outdoor paint, it looked to me like it needed a finish coat to protect the paint. Like a varnish but obviously not a varnish but what ever they put into paint to protect it from the outdoors and gives it a little sheen. It is hard to tell through a lens but that is what it looks like to me. Were Victorian paints flat? Happy Thanksgiving!
DO YOU PLAN ON INSULATING THE WALLS(AFTER ANY WIRING IS DONE) OR THE COST WOULD OUTWAY THE BENIFITS? MY PARENTS HOUSE HAD SAP ON THE ALUMINUM SIDING AND EVERY MEMORIAL DAY WE WOULD SPEND THE DAY CLEANING IT WITH LAVA SOAP. WHAT FUN! THANK YOU.

Is there a chemical reaction happening with the house paint? Whatever is happening, it wouldn't be feasible to clean the house every six months. Love your dress. You are a talented seamstress. Another interesting video.
Is the black on the paint mildew? Could it be some sort of fungus that feeds on the linseed oil? Beautiful dress, Jeanie! You’ve been busy with *two* outfits! I agree - you need your sewing room done so you can do all your projects. It’s been cool enough at night that some of my camellias are blooming and have been for at least a week. And now I’ve even seen two blooms on the one that off my back screened porch and that bush usually doesn’t bloom until nearly spring, late February or so. But last night I happened to check the temp at around 4:30AM and it was only 23 or 25 (I can’t remember - I was too sleepy!) but the high today was about 55. It’s already down to 44 at 5:30PM, so it’s going to be cold again tonight and, I think, all weekend. That means camellias for the Christmas table for sure this year! I’ll bet your come out a little bit earlier this year, too! 🌺🌸 (Okay, they aren’t camellias, but they’re the same color as mine! 😂)

Hopefully next time you can do the fireplace. Can any of your fireplaces be restored or put a stove in them for heat ?They are beautiful . I hope they can be restored
@@1834RestorationHouse Working women that wore those clothes had to be able to move too. Actually a good corset is more comfortable then a bra and will support your back. The trick is getting a good one that fits correctly. Don't buy a cheep corset.
might also notice more of it on the sides of the house that don't get as much sun, do find it odd that it doesn't seems to be as noticeable on the white paint though.... could the white paint be kilz? since the stuff is mold and mildew resistant?
I really like your long coat Jeannie. It’s very figure flattering! I remember my Dad putting poly in our windows when I was a kid. It really helped until they could afford new windows. Winter has already come for me up here in the great state of Minnesota. It’s been snowing for 3 days and the temp is about 5°f heading down to -10°f this weekend. Thank you on the dress! It would be a nightmare to have the whole house go off like that.
they are called curtain tiebacks-)-how is the job? Yes, it's the Fox-Trot man....Cheers!
Job is going well!
I love your dress!
Thank you!
Beautiful dress Jeanie. Happy Thanksgiving to you both!
Thank you! You too!
It was 27 degrees when we woke up this morning!

I had to force my friend ↖️ and threaten him with no breakfast to get him to go out this morning! 😂 He said he’d rather wait till it at least got above freezing!
What is cloth tape? Where can i purchase it?
If you made the duster you had on in the yard girl you need a shop!! That thing if gorgeous!! You guys need to make your videos longer. I only get to spend time with you one day a week and it is not enough! I simply love you two. Your are like my best friends that moved away!! Move back. Or make your lively home a b& b and I'll come see you!!
Lol! It seems like we've been living just about everywhere at one time or another. Yes, Jeanie made that one too! She's getting better and faster with her sewing projects. Thanks for stopping by!
Jeanie did you make the coat you were wearing too? I loved the dress with the belt. Too bad about the magnolia seeds. Mike would you consult a historic preservation society about exterior paint? It looks like it grew mold to me.
Jeanie made that coat, although she didn't mention it. The black residue on the paint sure looks like mold to me as well.
I have a question about the amplifiers you refurbish.. Are all the tubes needed for these old amps and electronics still available?
For the most part, yes. They're still being made in China and Russia.
Wow did you make your coat? Beautiful
Yes I did! Thank you.
Try wet and forget.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Same to you!
Hopefully next time you can do the fireplace. Can any of your fireplaces be restored or put a stove in them for heat ?They are beautiful . I hope they can be restored
We need to have the chimneys swept and some of the masonry replaced near the tops. We hope to be able to burn coal fires in the future.
@@1834RestorationHouse that’s great I hope that’s soon so you can be warm and toasty.
Could the paint be "oxidizing"?
Oxidation looks chalky.
What is the name of the white cloth tape?
Gaff tape.
To truly look victorian you need the proper under pinnings. Other wise you won't have the correct silhouette.
This is true! This will be a working dress, so freedom of movement is more important than silhouette.
@@1834RestorationHouse Working women that wore those clothes had to be able to move too. Actually a good corset is more comfortable then a bra and will support your back. The trick is getting a good one that fits correctly. Don't buy a cheep corset.
I'll bet Mike never thought he would start stripping on RUclips to make extra cash...
Lol! I never thought I would be on RUclips at all!
Bleach water on the siding, pump sprayer an then power wash it, I do it all the time stay away from cleaners no good
might also notice more of it on the sides of the house that don't get as much sun, do find it odd that it doesn't seems to be as noticeable on the white paint though.... could the white paint be kilz? since the stuff is mold and mildew resistant?
I really like your long coat Jeannie. It’s very figure flattering! I remember my Dad putting poly in our windows when I was a kid. It really helped until they could afford new windows. Winter has already come for me up here in the great state of Minnesota. It’s been snowing for 3 days and the temp is about 5°f heading down to -10°f this weekend. I bet you two don’t miss the NY winters? I hope all is well. If I don’t catch a video before next Thursday I want to with you both a Happy and Thankful Thanksgiving❣️(((Hugs))) Doc
