  • The machine was cleaned and lubricated and several faults repaired, including:
    - replacing the motor drive gears (which had teeth missing).
    - replace all foam rubber padding with neoprene (for dust and sound proofing).
    - fix the add/subtract counter mechanism which had frozen (probably due to lack of use)
    - Replace the motor start capacitor, motor switch arc suppressor and mains line filter.
    - replace all cabinet sealing rubber
    - replace a bunch of missing screws
This variant has change calculation which makes it fairly rare for a machine in such good condition. A cabinet re-spray would have been nice, but the client required a mechanical overhaul only.
NOTE: I AM BASED IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA. As much as I'd like to, I can't offer any useful advice on your broken machine unless I can see it. Its hard enough to troubleshoot these things when they are right in front of you.

Is there anything better than the sound of an old cash register to bring back those memories from less complicated times. Thanks for posting!

My Father worked at NCR for 30 years. Started in Philly 1965 then retired in NC 1995 He worked on the old mechanical units and went through the entire electronic transition (ECR's Electronic Cash Register) . I remember him having to travel to NCR HQ in Dayton Ohio many times for training. Thanks for sharing. Dad used to take me to the office on Sunday's and I would play with these all day long....lol

I remember these from the early seventies.
On a busy weekend at the supermarket with all of the Checkout isles full, the Cacophony of those cash registers all going at the same time.

I love the sound of these registers. Very distinct. The Acme Market we had in town had these and when the chain closed down in Upstate New York and a new chain moved into the space they kept the Class 51s until about 1983. From there they switched to FJay electronic registers.

I worked for Kmart in the 70s and 80s. The last store I worked at in 1985 opened in 1964 with Class 51s in perimeter departments and a dozen or so Class 61s at the front checkouts. The 51s were still going in 1985 when I left my store-level position for a job in Kmart's HQ in Troy. The 61s were retired in the early 80s for electronic registers.
This store was a very busy store and at Christmastime, the dozen 61s ringing up gifts made a deafening racket. The 51s and 61s were remarkably reliable.
One other Kmart NCR that sticks out in my mind was the Class 5. It took two men and a horse to move them. It was, I believe, the first register designed to transmit data directly to a computer network. When these locomotives were 'read' each morning by office personnel, the Class 5s chugged out a tape that tallied the prior day's receipts for 16 departments plus sales tax. It was an unforgettable mechanical melody. The other thing I recall was the thundering crash they made when hitting the bottom of a 40 yard dumpster. These, according to Kmart management lore, cost the company thousands of dollars for each one and there were about 2000 stores at the time... each store had up to 20 of them.

A local supermarket where I live (A&P in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) had this type of cash register until sometime in 1976. They were very reliable and when the power went out, the cashiers would crank them by hand. Sometimes they left the handcranks in the registers just in case. One time there was a power outage in my area and the store was running on emergency power and there was no power for the cash registers. The cashiers were cranking the registers by hand. Each time they "rung" up an item, they had to turn the crank once to register the item.

We had an Acme in Pulaski, NY that had these registers when they closed in ‘79. The store that went into that building, a Super Duper, continued with these registers for another two years before switching to electronic registers made by FJay.

I had a 101 NCR (?) - Open All Hours machine! Could never work out why it had a CASH button. Not pressing CASH made no difference to registers. It did have a PAID OUT button which obviously showed a negative entry on the audit roll.

Great job! I have two NCR 51 here in Germany, to take them apart I need a key for the printer side. Hopefully, a guy near me (even a bigger collector than I am) has somthing like that in his mass of keys.
Can you tell me how to dismount the ribbon frame? One of my machines doesn't deal with the paper properly and jams. Thanks!
Also, one of my machines is doing good with 44mm wide paper rolls for the receipt, whereas in the other even the 37mm ones seem to wide...any advice?

The lock is rudimentary, easily picked. Turns to the right for "reset" and left for "read". Depending on the model, it probably has a printer, but getting paper and ink ribbon is the trick.

Thank you for your video. I am working on one of these right now. A class 21. I have a question... Do all of these registers have a audit roll that stays in the machine and customer receipt?
Mine seems to only have the audit roll and no customer receipt. If it had both, are there two print heads in the machine for the two rolls?
I would think all registers would print a receipt. Mine seems only to have the audit. Also, what type of oil do you use to lubricate the cash register?
Mine is all frozen up and I am just starting to loosen everything up and need to lube it at some point.

    • @mikekelly7963
      @mikekelly7963  3 года назад

Some models did not have a receipt printer, the receipt printer models look like this --> www.picclickimg.com/d/l400/pict/323837039151_/Vintage-1960-National-Cash-Register-Class-21-208A-Electric.jpg
I use automatic transmission fluid for lubrication, the first one I did was in 2014 and the lube is still fine.

@@mikekelly7963 Thanks for the automatic transmission tip. I finally got everything unfrozen. the last part was the adder wheel in the center. The machine kept jamming and that was the cause. All good now. I will re oil everything with ATF. thanks again

Hi Mike, I realize I am responding to a 4 year old post, but hopefully your still monitoring for comments. I am restoring a Sweda Model 46. Due to it's advanced stage of neglect and gummed up lubricant, I chose to tear it completely down as I like challenges. I took hundreds of pictures / videos to aid in re assembly, but I have been stuck for about a year (on and off) trying to figure out the mechanical timing of the device.
I have given up trying to locate a Sweda 46 service manual as I believe they have all been either destroyed, or packed away in someone's attic. I have searched the internet for years without ever seeing a picture of one. My next step is to locate a service manual from another manufacturer with the hopes that the mechanical logic timing is similar enough to provide some hints.
Are you aware if NCR service manuals for this era of cash register are available? Looking at the internals, it appears very similar to the Sweda.
    Thanks!!
