Very cool! My granddaddy started logging w mules and finally small Ford tractors when I was a little fella. Mind blowing the equipment we have today compared to just 40 years ago
You can see a crawler/ hauler made by the Lamb Co. of Hoquiam Washington, at the Polson Museum in Hoquiam Washington. They were pioneers in logging and paper making machinery on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state.
There were later lombard log haulers that could, in fact, be operated on roads; the skis on the front were substituted with wheels. These can be seen on youtube videos.
I wonder if anyone ever added up how many people died operating a Caterpillar, even broken down by ratio of how many units produced vs. how many killed? HORNSBY in England was the "first" full crawler powered by gasoline, and Holt wouldn't have bought the clutch steer patent from them if they didn't count. Lombard was the first practical crawler as in factory production, sales and service when Holt was still "experimenting". A few lawyers got rich arguing who invented what, prior art, etc.
Wow! I wish someone had let my track equipped tractor know it could move and be maneuverable on ice and snow. Probably would have kept it from sliding across the ice and into my pickup!
To GREY FERGY101 and ALISTERWOLF66:I am a great fan of old machines and their histories.I never knew this story about Hornsby and Caterpillar. Thanks for the edification. So whats the truth about Cyrus Hall McCormmick being the 'first' inventor of the mechanical reaper.Did he invented it first or not? I would really like to know. What sources are you all getting the truth from.I would really like to get hold of some great books about machines' histories. Thanks very much.Cheers from Guyana.
i enjoyed that! a good bit of old video there. old cats RULE! theres a guy in Canada thats into this stuff. google KING OF OBSOLETE when you get a chance. I enjoyed this old crawler tractor video a lot. Thanks for posting this up, foresthistory.
Boring fact. The operator of these were called Skinners just like mule or horse team operators were Skinners. Tracked vehicles were called Cats after caterpillar. The phrase "More than one way to skin a cat" has nothing to do with felines and it really means more than one way to run a tracked vehicle.

what a beaut they sure don't make them like that anymore. I really love the older reliable machines with no electronics.
Thanks for sharing. Love these old films. So nice seeing how machines evolved.

Being chased down hill by giant logs. Crazy

They all work the same on snow and ice. Move forard and backwards. Plus they go sideways very fast if going across a hill
wow thats quite the movie!
Guess it should have been called "The history of Caterpillar" as it didn't even mention a better crawler tractor, the Cletrac.

Восхитительная техника, жаль сейчас почти всё пластмассовое, одноразовое, образно говоря,
Wonder how much dust they inhaled

Why can't channel owners wait until the video is almost completely done before adding crap that obstructs the view? Really tired of that.
Only rides on ice. Has no brakes.
Try doing that with a lithium ion battery:)

Typical American video. NO mention of the Hornsby -Ackroyd Crawler tractor made in England in 1896 which pre dates the Best and Holt tractors.
