  • This video shows a dog in the middle to late middle stages of bloat. This dog, Roscoe, was saved. He had just arrived in a new home. The weather was warm but not hot, actually quite pleasant as this video was being filmed. Neither the person who brought the dog to this foster home nor the foster home had ever seen bloat and had no idea of what they were seeing. As soon as they realized something was wrong, he was rushed to the emergency vet. I can tell you from personal experience that we can talk to you about it forever, but until you actually experience it, it is very difficult to recognize. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and in this case the video is priceless for its teaching value. The person filming this very kindly allowed us to use it as an educational tool so other people can learn to recognize what is happening when a dog bloats.A voiceover was done to point out the various symptoms of bloat to those who may not recognize or understand what they are seeing. This dog bloated, but did not have gastric torsion. His stomach filled with air, but luckily for him, he made it to the vet in enough time that he had not torsed. They were able to deflate him and he is now home and doing well. Torsion occurs when the stomach flips over, cutting off the blood supply causing stomach tissue to start dying. Torsion requires very expensive surgery, and even if your dog survives the surgery, they may not survive the aftermath when the toxins from the dying tissue are released causing heart arrhythmias and sepsis. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take your dog to the vet if you think he may be bloating even if there is no swelling apparent yet. Sometimes there is no obvious swelling in the early stages; your dog just looks "fatter". They can take an x-ray to determine if your dog is in the early stages and treat him immediately. If the vet refuses to take an x-ray, INSIST upon it. This is YOUR dog. YOU know him very well and if the vet still refuses to take an x-ray, go elsewhere. The earlier it is caught, the better your dog's chances of living. For more info on symptoms go to

    So, I randomly saw this video about 8 months ago. The day before yesterday, I was able to recognize immediately what was happening to my Doberman and get him to the animal emergency clinic in time to save his life. I honestly don't know how I could ever express the depth of my gratitude. If I had lost my dog ...
    But that didn't happen. And it's because of you.

    Some of you people seriously need to calm the hell down. The academy doesn't hand out awards for "best dramatic performance on youtube". These people were inexperienced and likely just thought their dog was going to vomit. If you bothered to read the video description, you'd see that...
    "A voiceover was done to point out the various symptoms of bloat to those who may not recognize or understand what they are seeing. This dog bloated, but did not have gastric torsion. This video is highly valuable. If you have a dog, particularly a large, male dog with a deep chest (great dane, german shepherds, large labs, akita, malamute, huskt, etc) and don't know the signs, you would do well to to watch it all the way through.

    In the past 2 1/2 years, we've adopted three greyhounds. We have been cautioned about bloat, since greyhounds have the body type that is prone to bloat.
    I've read up on the subject, including several descriptions of what it looks like - how a dog will look and behave when it's happening. I was still concerned I might not recognize it if it happened. Actually *seeing* it as it's happening in this video really brings it home much more clearly and I'm more confident I know what to look for.
    I appreciate those involved making this available in spite of the negative comments from those who don't understand the situation (and won't take the time to read the description). I have no doubt this has and will continue to save lives.

I've never seen bloat before (and here's hoping I never do!), but my dog has a deep chest and could be prone to it. I've read about bloat, but it is infinitely more helpful to actually SEE what it looks like. So glad that this akita made it to the vet in time and was saved! Thank you owners for getting video of all of these symptoms, not just to show your vet but to share with us (to people criticizing that, shush! I've video taped weird things my foster dogs were doing so I could ask the vet later and the vet was very grateful I did...you can tell the foster parents are worried and trying to figure out what's wrong and how serious the situation is).

    I have always adopted large dogs. Never had a problem with this before but my 7 year old German Shepherd just survived GDV. Last week, I took him to the emergency vet as soon as he got these symptoms. He was in full torsion and required emergency surgery. He also lost his spleen in the process. It’s important to get this information out to pet owners. Bloat and gastric torsion is a terrible thing. When I adopt another dog, I will get him a prophylactic gastropexy when it can be done with a minimal degree of invasiveness via laparoscopy. I will never have another dog go through this hell again. But my beloved Shepherd just had his staples removed yesterday. He’s doing great and will make a full recovery!

    I believe it was said that they were fostering this dog and waiting for help to arrive, I guess someone from the shelter. Trust me, this is the scariest thing to go through. It happened to my German Shepherd when he was just a little more than a year old. He ended up at the University of Penn and thankfully after emergency surgery, survived! Surgeon had to remove his spleen and said it was biggest he'd ever seen (10 lbs.) and it was going in their medical book. My pup will be 12 in May and never had a repeat of bloat thank God! They did staple his stomach in place to prevent it from happening again. That is VERY important to do because once a dog bloats the chances go up that it will happen again.

    • @dancingakitalady
      @dancingakitalady  10 лет назад

      Tacking the stomach will not necessarily prevent bloat. It will stop the stomach from torsing if the dog bloats again.

    This happened to my 13 year old black lab 10 years ago. She was let outside to go piss and/or shit and then a little later, my mom went to let her back in and she was laying alongside the house, which is abnormal. She stood up, then fell over. We got her back inside, where she just laid down in the laundry room floor that night until she died at sometime around 10 AM or even possibly earlier, before one of us noticed her. Happened at night and there weren't any vets open, obviously. It might have been the weekend, too. Doubt anyone could have saved her anyway. RIP, Shadow. Had her since she was 6 weeks old.

    Our Akita bloated in 2010. He also had torsion, and was 11. Although we got to the vet within 30 minutes of onset (we recognized the signs within 10 minutes & were 20 minutes away from the vet clinic) it was essentially too late for him. The operation and recovery would have been too much -he had an autoimmune disease his whole life that left him compromised. Even if you recognize bloat, and go to the vet, it may be too late already. My dog experienced GDV (bloat) today I’m not sure why I’m watching these videos it was extremely terrifying. I thought he just had to throw up but quickly started to worry when I noticed the abnormal think saliva and no actual vomit coming out. I then realized how distended and large his stomach was, the expression on his face and posture, something definitely was not right. I’m beyond grateful I caught it when I did, he needed emergency surgery and is now in recover and doing well the doctor says. This video depicts exactly what happened and would have been very helpful to have seen prior to the horrible event. Thought glad to see it up here for those who may be experiencing the same thing. If you happen to see something abnormal like this or your dog is in distress please take it to the vet this does not cure itself and is life threatening!

The next few days will be critical and if he makes it through those, he should be okay. Please let your friends and anyone who has a large, deep-chested dog know about this video. We have received some very negative feedback, but it has helped save lives. Prayers and healing thoughts for your dog

    This video is invaluable and I still point dog owners to it. My dog bloated in Feb 2018 and, because I was Bloat Aware and had a fantastic vet hospital near me who are 24/7 and who knew what they were doing, his life was saved and he recovered well. He had the full torsion and his spleen was damaged thus removed. Please, please become Bloat Aware and also spread the word. It can happen to any dog. GSD, hounds (yes even small ones) Labs, Akitas(!) etc. etc. Join the Canine Bloat Awareness group on Facebook. Most importantly, talk to your vet NOW and find out their out-of-hours contingency plan. My boy did this on a Sunday lunchtime and not at a convenient week day afternoon!

    And at 14 I don't even know he could have survived surgery- he had some mini strokes 2 years ago when we were coming cross country to move from NY to AZ. He had a bad bite from one of our other Akitas last summer and lost so much blood. He had an anal tumor removed in July 2011, he had a fatty tumor in his chest we have had to monitor. He has been through so much and we were spoiled since we had snatched him from death before. Meantime our 13 yr old Akita is running around chasing our beagle pup

    To chicago canine: After my canine soulmate, Gizzy, bloated at 1o yrs, I talked with Dr. Glickman who did the bloat study at Purdue. He said it is also considered one of the "old age" diseases; ligaments are no longer so elastic, digestive systems are sluggish. Dogs older than 8 are at a greater risk of bloating. One of my friends who is very into dog health problems thinks that sometimes bloat occurs when there is something else wrong with the dog that is not apparent yet. cont'd

    I agree its hard to find a vet that will work with you on payments. Most of them care more about the money then helping the animals. When they will turn you away as soon they find out you dont have money at the time of the visit.

    • @dancingakitalady
      @dancingakitalady  6 лет назад +1

      I am very sympathetic to people who do not have the means/money to pay for veterinary treatment. I have been in that situation myself. But I am also sympathetic to vets who have extended "credit" or agreed to payment plans only to be stiffed. They are running a business, not a charity, although many will work with long time clients.

    This is hard to watch. My Golden bloated with torsion when she was 11. Luckily I knew the signs, knew right away that it was an emergency and rushed her to the e-vet, so there was no necrotic tissue (her stomach, spleen and start of the intestines were twisted) and she came through surgery great with no after effects.
    This is why it is so important to know the signs! She bloated on an empty stomach when she had not yet eaten that day, had not exercised, had not drank a lot of water or anything.

    @bostonrott I am glad to hear your girl survived. How old is she? When my Gizzy bloated at 10.5 years, he did bloat again also, but did not torse due to the surgery. He made it another 18 months before he died. Age is a factor in bloat.

    My Rottie bitch bloated Christmas night. Thankfully she lived. For those wondering, surgery and ICU treatment were $5200. She bloated again 2 days after she came home, but didn't torse again b/c her stomach was tacked. Another $800 to decompress her stomach (via tube) and monitor for further complications. Bloat is terrifying, and expensive to fix!

    Wish I had seen this 5 years ago. My dog was behaving similarly, but I had never seen a dog with bloat before and didn't know what was wrong. He also had a habit of pacing whenever a storm was coming so at first, that's what I thought it was. I was still unsure so I filmed it to show the vet, it wasn't until I searched his behaviors online that I came across bloat and I *immediately* rushed him to the emergency vet, which was thankfully very close by. Unfortunately, it was too late, he had already gotten to the torsion stage.
    By far, that was the worst night of my life. I'm still not over it and angry with myself for not recognizing his symptoms sooner. Maybe if I did, I wouldn't have wasted time and got him the help he needed.

    • @dancingakitalady

      Most people who have not seen or experienced bloat do not recognize it for what it is. When my first dog bloated, it was pretty obvious...we arrived home to find her looking like she had swallowed several basketballs. She did not survive either; she had torsed and more than half of her stomach was necrotic. We were home the next time a dog bloated. He was a senior and acting oddly. Luckily I am a worrywart mom and took him to the vet for that, not realizing he was in the early stages of bloat. He was deflated and survived. He bloated again later at age 13 and we let him go. My whole point is that until you have experienced bloat or have seen something like this video, no matter how many times you have been told about bloat, you rarely recognize it initially. Stop beating yourself up. You took him to the vet as soon as you realized what was going on

    I know this video is very hard to watch, especially for those whose dogs have bloated. We can talk til we are blue in the face about the symptoms of bloat and how it looks, but felt this video really showed the progression, even in just 3 minutes and if people saw it, might recognize the symptoms in their own dogs and get them to the vet quickly enough to save their lives. The people doing this vid had never seen it and did not know what was going on at the time.

  • @dancingakitalady

    If you read the info under the video, there is a description of bloat and a link to the bloat page on our website. It lists some of the causes and some of the recommendations to help prevent it.

    PLEASE, TAKE THEM TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY !! I think my dog had this recently. I researched it extensively and could not find anything that matched the symptoms as closely as this video. I did bring her to the vet but they did not do x-rays or diagnose it. So I spent 36-40 sleepless hours with my dog literally believing she was going to die. Symptoms were expanded chest, stomach. She vomited multiple times the first hour or two until her guts were empty. Then Intermittent "dry heaving" , rapid, repeated heaving that sounded like a chain saw that was cranking but wouldn't start. This would go on for 1-2 minutes. I started massaging her chest and noticed incredibly rapid heart beat. It went from normal to 10 times the regular rate while she was heaving. I thought her heart was going to explode. I started hugging her, massaging her ribs, lungs and chest medium pressure and talked to her gently while this was happening. It helped calm her heart rate and heaving almost immediately. It was almost like I was "squishing" her stomach back to normal but not so hard as to hurt her. This was a big help in calming the fits/seizures but it did not cure the problem, nor did it decrease the frequency. So, massage her lungs, chest, belly with medium pressure while talking to her. It may have saved her life. Now that I know this is likely the issue, if it ever happens again she's going back to the vet immediately. I was terrified. I didn't eat, sleep or go anywhere. She was incredibly miserable and wouldn't eat, drink or even move unless I really encouraged her. She would lay down after 2-3 steps unless I kept her moving.

    I have an Akita and I've never seen bloat before. Thanks for sharing the video! On another note, are those ice cubes in the dog's water? I was told never to give dog's ice cold water and wondered if this has anything to do with bloat?

    • @Lilyroe26
      @Lilyroe26 9 лет назад +1

      ARFVolunteerTrish It's ok to give a healthy dog ice cubes in their water. If, on the other hand, a the dog is suffering with heatstroke, showing signs of heat stress / exhuastion they should NOT be cooled with iced water / ice cubes while in crisis, nor should the be plunged into very cold water as this will cause the dog to go into shock. Hope that clarifies your query.

    I understand if your dog has bloated and drinks and the water comes right back out, he has probably already torsioned. Makes sense if you think of the twist as a blocked pipe.
    If you have insurance for your dog, talk to them about adding coverage for "Prophylactic Gastropexy " during other invasive surgery (such as spay or neuter)
    It is not covered now because it is "elective surgery" but they will pay out 4 or 5 times as much in your claim for ER services to save your dog's life.

  • @dancingakitalady
    @dancingakitalady  11 лет назад

  • @dancingakitalady
    @dancingakitalady  12 лет назад

    part 2 for coobutthoolio: Bloat is expensive to treat, but I think the least they would have done is eased his pain and if necessary deflated him somewhat in the meantime. Unless the bloat is very obvious, many vets do x-rays before starting treatment. It gives them an idea of what they will be dealing with in surgery, just bloat or that plus intestinal torsion, ruptured spleen etc. It coud also be the dog is bloating because of another condition see part 3

  • @dancingakitalady
    @dancingakitalady  12 лет назад

    @danielxism A lot depends on where you live. If it is an emergency clinic, there is the cost of an emergency visit which can run from $100-200 dollars, xrays, deflation treatment, meds. I cannot say for sure, but my best guess would be $1000-2000. And if your dog has bloated, surgery to tack the stomach should be preformed to help prevent future torsion if the dog bloats again.

    I recommend everyone with barrel chested large breed dogs to have Simethicone drops on hand at all times. They're the drops for gassy babies and can be bought over the counter, most mom's out there will know what it is. Simethicone won't stop bloat but it can slow it down enough to get to the ER vet
