Just been to Svalbard to track the Northern Lights down. All i can say is wow. What a show. A fantastic place. Went out with Better Moments on the skidoos into the wilderness. Total darkness What a place. You cant get much more North than that and the lights were fantastic
Nice Job! I live about in the middle of Finland maybe little bit more north side, but we are seeing auroras here every winter. . Sometimes they are actually dancing 😊 if they are strong enough you can actually hear them...that crackling sound
As someone who works within the tour operator industry in Iceland, seeing the northern lights is tricky mainly due to the fact that Icelandic weather is extremely cloudy, especially during winter, which blocks visibility and for some reason Mother Nature LOVES to have high activity with really cloudy sky or low activity with no clouds in sight. Some companies are thinking of changing the policy of the rebooking system, where you are not able to rebook as many time until successful so my main advice would be read the fine print and ask any and all questions directly to the company so that they can let you know what to expect. Unfortunately, the only thing that is guaranteed on the Northern Lights tour is that nothing is guaranteed because we cannot control mother nature.
Yeah, yeah ....blame the clouds. I didn't see any realisation of the real reason for the "problems" with northern lights....which is the simple fact of Iceland's and Reykjavik's location...which is far in the south. I say that since I live far north of anything on Iceland....and well over 650 km further north than Reykjavik (latitude wise). Iceland is not in the Arctic ...and Reykjavik is around 225 km south of the Arctic Circle. Offering northern light tours on Iceland is like asking people to visit Germany ....in order to experience France..... Iceland has plenty of other things to show off to tourists ....but northern lights....not really....find something better to do.....

What really matters is the Sun’s activity. As long as you’re above the Arctic Circle, Finnish or Norwegian Lapland or in Iceland, if there’s no Sun activity causing the Auroras the location doesn’t really matter. Also, being a Laplander myself, I guarantee the green or whatever colour is at least as bright for the naked eye as it is on camera. I’m happy that your odyssey for the Northern Lights had a happy ending.😊
Did you guys listen at all at the guides when the explained how the lights work or did you book the cheapest chase without guides? I have studied the lights and can honestly tell you that the northern lights are far from the simplicity as you present them and no country better then other in that matter, solar storms, gas density and the magnetic poles have no boarders. In this part of the world you only need darkness and a dash of luck. The truth is that you are really misleading people with your lack of knowledge.
Lucky to see the Northern lights in Iceland on our first tour, but my companion was disappointed because the lights weren't as strong so she had to join the tour next day (for free). Still happy for the experience! Nature is just wonderful! Can't wait to see it again in Lapland and Tromso!

What month did you go to Tromso? Planning a trip December 2025. Trying to decide between Tromso and Fairbanks, AK. We are timing it for when there is a New Moon (no moon). Our only goal is to see the northern lights.
The fact is, whether you're gonna see them in any country or not it's really just down to luck. Also I've heard that the lights are potentially even more active in autumn and/or spring? But jugding by your videos it definitely seems like Norway has the best chances! It's true that in Finland it often snows a lot which obviously means clouds
December-January is the worst possible time period to go to the north for the lights. The weather is cloudy and grey. If it's not, then you have to send in your lottery ticket asap! edit: Well... naturally summer is even worse as there is daylight 24/7...
@@oh2mpthey are more active around the equinoxes but around the arctic circle your chances are better in the winter solstice since it's dark all day and the weather tends to be less stormy and cloudy because its coldest, which makes for crystal clear skies.
We were staying for 7 days in Tromso and saw no lights, as Tromso is super cloudy place. I live Finnish lapland much more, because the more cold it is, the more clear sky and Tromso is not so cold (more windy). Though in my life I saw auroras in Tromso about 15 times, but I would say it was hard. So I guess you just were lucky to catch clear sky and solar activity exatly that time you were in Norway :)
Nice summary. My hints for to see northern lights are: - Be north. The norther you are, the better chance you have and the lights are also stronger. You should be at least on the polar circle. - The best time is around vernal and autumnal equinoxes (22nd of September or March) when the lights are the strongest. - Be near to an ocean where probability for clear sky is a little higher than inlands.
Your ideas of weather patterns ....and the occurrence of clouds ....show that you can impossible live anywhere near the ocean. Let me inform you that it is the moist from the ocean that forms the clouds when it reach the coasts. So sorry start from square one ....again....

I'm leaving for the Lofoten islands in a week or so. We'll be on the islands for about 8 days. I really want to see the lights. Did you guys go that far south at all? Looks like even with a low KP index, they are pretty common there, since the islands are relatively close to Tromso, but I'm wondering how far more north we might need to go.
We did not go that far south, but you are right, even when the KPs are low, you can still have a good chance of seeing them there! We saw them on the Sommaroy islands too :)
Which months did you guys travel to each destination? I'm thinking of taking my fam either to Tromso or Iceland. Iceland seems to have the more diverse things to do and see. But if Tromso is where the northern lights are, that's probably where we'll be first. I was also looking at the cruises from Tromso.
We were in Iceland the end of November and tromso the beginning of December! They are both great, but I would say Tromso probably has a better chance of northern light! Enjoy your trip :)
A location that will have all of them beat hands down, is Longyarbyen on Svalbard, more than a 1000 km north of Tromsø and Northern Finland and 1325 km north of Iceland. The season would also be quite a bit longer. The most important factor is weather conditions. You would also have to decide how comfortable you want to be while gazing at the Northern Lights.
We recently just had a severe G4 geomagnetic storm and the auroras were surreal. I saw them from central MN and the entire sky looked like a techno rave, with pink flashes covering every inch of the sky. These were the best auroras since 2017 and I feel so lucky to have witnessed them.
Sommaroy might be better because there is less light pollution! But if you go outside the city center in Tromso you will have a great chance to see them too :)
Mr Birkeland established the Northern Lights Observatory in Alta (just East of Tromsø) after having had priests in Norway, Sweden and Finland record the duration of Aurora I think for 3 years in their parishes.

In Finland we used Wild About Lapland and in Iceland we used Reykjavik Excursions. We didn't do a northern lights tour in Norway, just saw them a lot on our daily activities :) we were there end of November/early december!
We are so happy it helped :) we don't have our itinerary writte down but we flew into Iceland, spent 7 days there, then spent 14 days in Finland in Levi and Rovanemi, the 10 tens in Norway in Tromso and Sommaroy :) hope that helps!

We hope it helped!! For strictly seeing the aurora I would recommend staying outside of the city limits so that the light doesn't limit your chances of seeing the auroras. We also got our best aurora show ever when we were on a boat in Tromso :) so we would for sure recommend getting on a boat if you can! We also went to Sommaroy about 45 minutes from Tromso and saw great auroras there!

We actually didn't do any northern lights tours while in Tromso, we just got very lucky and saw them multiples times while there. We were on a whale watching boat and got to see them, so I would definitely recommend doing a northern lights boat tour, to get away from all the city lights! We didn't even mean to find them while we were on the boat but it was the best light show we have ever seen! Enjoy your trip :)
i have set myself a goal to go to tromso and see the lights with my 2 daughters and wife.. We had a great summer holiday in Norway for the first time last year. The funny thing is after that summer vacation i looked up what my next destination should be and i picked tromso..Now after some research it seems thats a great place to be. The downside of tromso is that its very populair and thus expensive because of the tourists. the husky tour, reindeer, or whale spotting is getting expenisve to join as a family. Do you think its a great experience to go to tromso as a family, somewhere around end december begin januar?
We had a great time there!! Specifically for seeing the northern lights and seeing the orcas & humpback whales! I will say, it is the most expensive place we have ever traveled. But we saved a lot of money by going to grocery stores and not out to restaurants. We think it would be a great spot for a family trip! Enjoy friend :)

We just got back from Tromso a couple of weeks ago,( beginning of February). We saw the lights in Tromso but they were much more spectacular in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. I loved both places but Svalbards remoteness just did it for me. By the way, contrary to what I expected, the photos with my iphone 14 pro were better than those with my dslr. Just get to know your settings before you go,( exposure, iso, f-stop).
when did you go to see them in Svalbard and on what activity/company/time of day? I was going to book for Svalbard, but people said the mountains get in the way. so tromso is better. But if you saw them best in Svalbard I'd prefer going there anyway??
@@flash2k like I say, we went in February this year. The mountains surrounding the town can be restrictive but people were able to take photos from our hotel car park. The real restriction of being in town is light pollution. If you do any of the snowmobile, dog sledging, glacier activities out of town theres a reasonable chance of seeing the lights at the right time of year. When we went it was dark 24 hours a day but it was amazing how fast you got used to it and how much you could still see, ( remember that the snow and ice is reflecting any light). Both Tromso and Longyearbyen are great in their own right but I loved Longyearbyen. One thing to consider is that it isnt a good idea to leave town on foot on your own as there is a real risk of Polar bears there,( this is pointed out to you on the trip). Hope whichever you choose it works out well for you.
Planning a trip to Norway, specifically Tromso in January 2025. It appears that this month would be an ideal time to witness the northern lights? Please suggest if not we will change the month.
We are glad it helped! In Lapland, we used Wild About Lapland and in Iceland we used Reykjavik Adventures. In Norway we did not use a northern lights tour but we saw the lights on an Orca tour with Brim Explorer :)
Hey guys, this was one of the most amazing video that I came across on RUclips.. we have to go to Europe in 2025 and the dates are 20th to 27th January, we are quite confused if late January will be a good time to the lights? If yes then where? Tromso or Lapland? Also is the terrain in Tromso slippery? My wife had an ACL surgery last year, I would not like to take risk. If you can help that would be great.

Fairbanks...2,5hr from Seattle and you there, Aurora Borealis tours available. We went on the first weekend of October and it was stunning....yes,snowing already

If you are trying to see the northern lights then try to stay somewhere outside the city in the dark so it is easier to see them! September will be good for seeing the lights! Have a great trip :)

Very nice video. I appreciate the comparison of the three locations. We were in Tromso February 2023 and we only saw them one time from a cruise ship while we were in a passage and they were spectacular. While in Tromso, we went to the church that had a video in the basement and the photographer in the video said September around the equinox was the best time to come to Tromso and see the northern lights..
Returning to this video after seeing by far the craziest northern lights from last week's extreme G5 storm, the strongest since 2003. I was in awe the entire night as auroras of almost every color filled the entire sky from dusk till dawn. The reds were so intense it looked like a 360 degree wildfire was going on all around me with what looked like a portal to another dimension overhead. If I didn't know what I was seeing, I would think the world was ending. Still in complete awe in what I saw that night, way better than March and April 2023's aurora.

We saw them the first week of December and it was great! December does tend to be a bit more cloudy than other months though, so you can never quite tell!
It depends if you want snow and northern lights or sunny days! We went in December and did get a little sick of the dark but loved the northern lights :)

Abisko Sweden is suppose to be one of the best places to see the Northern Lights. My goal is to go to all of Scandinavia and see the Northern lights in all of them 💚💜💙
Very helpful for planning, thank you. Tromso is surely the one destination in the future and Lofoten Islands are not that far, too. When I was in Lapland (Rovaniemi) for 3 days some years ago, it was just the same as you said - too much clouds and fog, but amazing snowmobile, husky and reindeer rides, so memorable even though.
Best place in the world is Kilpisjärvi, Finland. Because statistically is the most active area for northern lights and the shows can be the most colorful and biggest in the world if you are there at that time. But the chances are always high there.
If you are going for the northern lights we would probably say yes, but the scenery in Iceland is unreal!! They are both amazing places! Thanks for watching :)
in the 80 e at summer I saw Aurore boréale on southern part of Quebec province then in the 90 e in my town 35 kilometers south east of Montreal Eastern township , across Quebec but since the year 2000 nothing there are some best place like Eastern township between Quebec and Saguenay Laurentian anywhere far from big city.but the Strongest was in the 80e when i was teenager at summer just between Montreal and the US border ( new york) . red cloud and green was like aliens were here . strong ones that we saw pictures from Baie James ( wasibi )

Contrary to popular belief, Europeans (not her) in a few earlier centuries never liked to live in places for years and years in the northern reaches of the geographical Inuit areas of their countries where it's forever frigid and icy almost all the time. Only Eskimos / Inuits liked such places of those three countries and Imperial Russia all year long and all around the north pole actually from just north of the Arctic Circle. . During the time of Peter the Great, North Sweden and North Norway and North Finland exported or deported all their Inuit Eskimo populations living there 300 years ago or so, living around the Arctic Circle to Imperial Russia and north Russia and Siberian Russia, in exchange for money paid to Imperial Russia. This was how Sweden the other two countries got rid of their Inuit populations and Eskimo populations about 300 years ago, in exchange for money. They were exported to Imperial Russia in exchange for money. The Eskimos were replaced by whites with a Nomadic lifestyle in North sweden and Norway and North Finland in places closer to the North Pole. I forgot the name of that ethnic group, like Sami white Inuits or white Eskimos, which had a similar lifestyle to Inuits. Like Inuits, the Sami white tribes likes fish and reindeer meat. All Inuits / Eskimos of North Sweden and North Finland and north Norway were deported to Imperial Russia in exchange for money paid to Imperial Russia about 300 years ago.

We did a lot of research and had to figure out the right camera settings to get the pictures :) but you can also use long exposure on your phone, it just comes out a little grainy. We visited Tromso in December! Have a great trip! And thank you so much!

I noticed that the more you are near the water, the more cloudy it is. Tromso is usually super cloudy

I'm leaving for the Lofoten islands in a week or so. We'll be on the islands for about 8 days. I really want to see the lights. Did you guys go that far south at all? Looks like even with a low KP index, they are pretty common there, since the islands are relatively close to Tromso, but I'm wondering how far more north we might need to go.
We did not go that far south, but you are right, even when the KPs are low, you can still have a good chance of seeing them there! We saw them on the Sommaroy islands too :)

Which months did you guys travel to each destination? I'm thinking of taking my fam either to Tromso or Iceland. Iceland seems to have the more diverse things to do and see. But if Tromso is where the northern lights are, that's probably where we'll be first. I was also looking at the cruises from Tromso.
We were in Iceland the end of November and tromso the beginning of December! They are both great, but I would say Tromso probably has a better chance of northern light! Enjoy your trip :)

A location that will have all of them beat hands down, is Longyarbyen on Svalbard, more than a 1000 km north of Tromsø and Northern Finland and 1325 km north of Iceland.
The season would also be quite a bit longer.
The most important factor is weather conditions.
You would also have to decide how comfortable you want to be while gazing at the Northern Lights.

We recently just had a severe G4 geomagnetic storm and the auroras were surreal. I saw them from central MN and the entire sky looked like a techno rave, with pink flashes covering every inch of the sky. These were the best auroras since 2017 and I feel so lucky to have witnessed them.
We saw so many people posting pictures of that!!! We are so jealous, I bet it was so amazing.

Sommaroy might be better because there is less light pollution! But if you go outside the city center in Tromso you will have a great chance to see them too :)

Mr Birkeland established the Northern Lights Observatory in Alta (just East of Tromsø) after having had priests in Norway, Sweden and Finland record the duration of Aurora I think for 3 years in their parishes.

In Finland we used Wild About Lapland and in Iceland we used Reykjavik Excursions. We didn't do a northern lights tour in Norway, just saw them a lot on our daily activities :) we were there end of November/early december!

We hope it helped!! For strictly seeing the aurora I would recommend staying outside of the city limits so that the light doesn't limit your chances of seeing the auroras. We also got our best aurora show ever when we were on a boat in Tromso :) so we would for sure recommend getting on a boat if you can! We also went to Sommaroy about 45 minutes from Tromso and saw great auroras there!

We actually didn't do any northern lights tours while in Tromso, we just got very lucky and saw them multiples times while there. We were on a whale watching boat and got to see them, so I would definitely recommend doing a northern lights boat tour, to get away from all the city lights! We didn't even mean to find them while we were on the boat but it was the best light show we have ever seen! Enjoy your trip :)

i have set myself a goal to go to tromso and see the lights with my 2 daughters and wife.. We had a great summer holiday in Norway for the first time last year. The funny thing is after that summer vacation i looked up what my next destination should be and i picked tromso..Now after some research it seems thats a great place to be.
The downside of tromso is that its very populair and thus expensive because of the tourists. the husky tour, reindeer, or whale spotting is getting expenisve to join as a family.
Do you think its a great experience to go to tromso as a family, somewhere around end december begin januar?
We had a great time there!! Specifically for seeing the northern lights and seeing the orcas & humpback whales! I will say, it is the most expensive place we have ever traveled. But we saved a lot of money by going to grocery stores and not out to restaurants. We think it would be a great spot for a family trip! Enjoy friend :)

We just got back from Tromso a couple of weeks ago,( beginning of February). We saw the lights in Tromso but they were much more spectacular in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. I loved both places but Svalbards remoteness just did it for me. By the way, contrary to what I expected, the photos with my iphone 14 pro were better than those with my dslr. Just get to know your settings before you go,( exposure, iso, f-stop).
I’m sure they were so amazing in Longyearbyen! We definitely want to go there someday! The iPhones do take surprisingly good pictures of the lights ✨
when did you go to see them in Svalbard and on what activity/company/time of day? I was going to book for Svalbard, but people said the mountains get in the way. so tromso is better. But if you saw them best in Svalbard I'd prefer going there anyway??
@@flash2k like I say, we went in February this year. The mountains surrounding the town can be restrictive but people were able to take photos from our hotel car park. The real restriction of being in town is light pollution. If you do any of the snowmobile, dog sledging, glacier activities out of town theres a reasonable chance of seeing the lights at the right time of year. When we went it was dark 24 hours a day but it was amazing how fast you got used to it and how much you could still see, ( remember that the snow and ice is reflecting any light). Both Tromso and Longyearbyen are great in their own right but I loved Longyearbyen. One thing to consider is that it isnt a good idea to leave town on foot on your own as there is a real risk of Polar bears there,( this is pointed out to you on the trip). Hope whichever you choose it works out well for you.

Hey guys, this was one of the most amazing video that I came across on RUclips.. we have to go to Europe in 2025 and the dates are 20th to 27th January, we are quite confused if late January will be a good time to the lights? If yes then where? Tromso or Lapland? Also is the terrain in Tromso slippery? My wife had an ACL surgery last year, I would not like to take risk. If you can help that would be great.

Very nice video. I appreciate the comparison of the three locations. We were in Tromso February 2023 and we only saw them one time from a cruise ship while we were in a passage and they were spectacular. While in Tromso, we went to the church that had a video in the basement and the photographer in the video said September around the equinox was the best time to come to Tromso and see the northern lights..

Returning to this video after seeing by far the craziest northern lights from last week's extreme G5 storm, the strongest since 2003. I was in awe the entire night as auroras of almost every color filled the entire sky from dusk till dawn. The reds were so intense it looked like a 360 degree wildfire was going on all around me with what looked like a portal to another dimension overhead. If I didn't know what I was seeing, I would think the world was ending. Still in complete awe in what I saw that night, way better than March and April 2023's aurora.

Abisko Sweden is suppose to be one of the best places to see the Northern Lights. My goal is to go to all of Scandinavia and see the Northern lights in all of them 💚💜💙

Very helpful for planning, thank you. Tromso is surely the one destination in the future and Lofoten Islands are not that far, too. When I was in Lapland (Rovaniemi) for 3 days some years ago, it was just the same as you said - too much clouds and fog, but amazing snowmobile, husky and reindeer rides, so memorable even though.

Best place in the world is Kilpisjärvi, Finland. Because statistically is the most active area for northern lights and the shows can be the most colorful and biggest in the world if you are there at that time. But the chances are always high there.

Contrary to popular belief, Europeans (not her) in a few earlier centuries never liked to live in places for years and years in the northern reaches of the geographical Inuit areas of their countries where it's forever frigid and icy almost all the time. Only Eskimos / Inuits liked such places of those three countries and Imperial Russia all year long and all around the north pole actually from just north of the Arctic Circle. . During the time of Peter the Great, North Sweden and North Norway and North Finland exported or deported all their Inuit Eskimo populations living there 300 years ago or so, living around the Arctic Circle to Imperial Russia and north Russia and Siberian Russia, in exchange for money paid to Imperial Russia. This was how Sweden the other two countries got rid of their Inuit populations and Eskimo populations about 300 years ago, in exchange for money. They were exported to Imperial Russia in exchange for money. The Eskimos were replaced by whites with a Nomadic lifestyle in North sweden and Norway and North Finland in places closer to the North Pole. I forgot the name of that ethnic group, like Sami white Inuits or white Eskimos, which had a similar lifestyle to Inuits. Like Inuits, the Sami white tribes likes fish and reindeer meat. All Inuits / Eskimos of North Sweden and North Finland and north Norway were deported to Imperial Russia in exchange for money paid to Imperial Russia about 300 years ago.
