Why Your Rowing Form Still Sucks!

- If you want MORE meters for FREE when rowing, you gotta stop pulling each stroke.
Rowing is a pull, right? In most contexts, YES. But in the contexts of rowing on a ROWING MACHINE, the stroke is very much NOT a pull!
It’s a PUSH. Every stroke starts with a leg push. And while many have HEARD that before, most still struggle to execute the leg push properly.
Most end up with a sort of “push legs AND pull arms at the same time”-hybrid type of movement! I personally was guilty of this for YEARS when I was rowing in college.
But a true rowing PUSH with the legs means that your torso stays LEANED forward for the first half of the rowing stroke. If you lean back AT ALL during the leg push, you miss out on the power of the hip swing.
But if you swing AFTER a leg push and THEN pull, that’s where the magic happens! I like to think of it as “earning the right to pull” each stroke. You only earn it if you push, then swing first!
I hope that makes sense… this takes some SERIOUS practice and intention. But it will pay off for you in the long run! Let me know your thoughts…
Love always,
Coach Austin
My form never sucked because I watched your vids before I even bought a rower. Thanks!
What's hurting my stroke is my big gut🤣🤣👍👍
Row an hour a day and before long it will not be an issue.
Good to see you’re still creating content - I’m still dipping into the back catalogue 😤.
Always amazed to see people trying to pull at the catch - hopefully you’ll get the message across 😎
If I take creatine along with rowing, will muscle mass increase during rowing? Thank you
I find it hard to gauge after my legs are straight if I swing then pull
The swing and then pull blurs into one for me
Thx coach, just started 3 weeks ago.. Greetz from Germany
Getting back into rowing recently and this was an awesome reminder!
