    Drove out to Les's place last weekend and got my "Member of the Tight Nut Gang" sticker. My pinion nut was not as bad as some, but it was well over 100 foot pounds LESS than it was supposed to be. Thank you Les for giving me peace of mind. It involved more work than I would have ever done (as you can see from this video).

    just did mine and it was loose! maybe 20 lbs. . I had the diff upside down. I turned it the wrong way and snugged it up to the tighten down position. that's when I knew it was only a matter of miles before it was off! it had alot of slop when I pulled the seal off. got it to 250 lbs and it seems great. now just got to put it back together
    a big thank you to ALL of you who was in part of this project. I will pay it forward to the next person who needs help.

    My RZR 800 unit was manufactured Feb 29, 2008 (yes, leap year day, a Friday). Do you think I am in the clear with respect to problems with the pinion nut based on the comment at the 24:04 mark ("....... from late 2008 to 2014")? I appreciate your comments and the effort put forth in preparing this video!

    Excellent video. Thanks for taking the time to shoot and post it. I'll be doing my '08 RZR 800 shortly, and will request to borrow the tools. Just one thing: It's a "final drive", not a "differential". Sorry to split hairs, but they are different. Thanks, Bob

    Thanks for the vid bigjeep man. Thank you to Les and Pirate as well. I do have one question tho; why not weld a nut to a splined adapter to be able to turn the pinion gear and simply lock the socket wrench he built into a vise. Just seems to me that it would make removal and installation, as well as the actual torque process a whole lot easier and have less to actually build?? Am I making sense?

    Great video my 2008 RZR rearend blew up going 30 mph with no warning a couple of weeks ago. Not putting in a used one so I am going to buy a complete new rearend and do your fix. My question is what is the distance from center line to centerline on your torquing fixture and what is the size of the pinion nut? You torqued the nut to 118ft pounds right? Any help would be very helpful THANXX Paul

    In the Video 33:13 the mechanic states it was set at 20 to 25 foot pounds. But now it's set at 250 foot pounds.
    I don't have a service manual to check what the bearing load is to be on that bearing that the nut is holding in place.
    If you want to see a bearing self destruct you over load it into the cup. It will get so hot it will destroy itself.
    So if someone would set me straight. What is the OEM per the manual say about the bearing load that the nut is suppose to be torqued at? 25? 250?
    Thanks!

      NYROCATV: I have the 2008 Manual and there is NO spec, as if the assembly has a failure it is an ALL-IN-ONE replacement (PER THE BOOK) you throw it away and install another defectively assembled Spicer Unit... That nut torque is NOT "pre-loading" the bearings "Per-Se" like in the matter you are thinking, the differential has specific spacers and shims that space the bearings a specific distance apart on the inner race on the pinion shaft, They have to be made that way due to the Fore/Aft Thrust of the shaft under Drive/Reverse and keeping the ring/pinion in alignment, so once you tighten them to 20Ft-lbs they cannot compress any further inward (Unlike a wheel bearing, where there is NOTHING to stop them, as they slide on the spindle indefinitely) so at even 250ft-lbs even though the wrench moves further, you are NOT changing the "preload" distance on the bearings, you are just taking the threads to the end of their limit. (If it is making them tighter, its not by a lot) That shaft "sees" more than 250ft-lbs of torque when you hammer the gas in low range. So its not a wonder that they need torque the crap out of it when you have no "keeper" to keep the nut from backing off.

    • @misters2837
      @misters2837 6 лет назад +1

      At 13:39 the OUTER Bearing isn't slid all the way on, And Inner Bearing is destroyed, but you can see the shims I am talking about. 13:41 or 13:42 is a good spot to pause too..

    Hey there what a great video. Les looks like he's got a lot of experience and he seems to be a great guy too! The only thing is I just purchase myself an rzr4 800 2012 with 19000kms (12000miles or so) and I don't know if this has been done or not but due to the high mileage I think this could be a good idea to check. What should I use for tools cause these look home made and when I am not a bad mechanic I am definitely not a good tool creator :S Anyway I can accomplish this task with just regular tools ? Thanks again for this great info you're passing along!

    I've done something stupid. I was replacing the main transmission fluid and when I was taking off the filler plug it broke into two pieces and half of it fell in my transmission. I've been trying to fish it out. Is there any way I can open up that transmission casing without having to take the hole engine out? I'm open to any ideas. I'm still trying to figure out how this happened. My wife and 7 year old son are not happy.
