  • During our "Hydroponic World Tour" in 2016 we had the chance to meet Dr. James Ebeling in Tucson Arizona. Together with the amazing Giovanna Hesley (Tucson Aquaponics Society) they gave us a tour inside of one of their aquaponic greenhouse : Tanque Verde School.
It is amazing to understand how to make aquaponic efficient, and how to include it into the school program.
We ended to tour with this statement : Every shool should have an aquaponic greenhouse !

What happens with the waste flushed from the beadfilter?

can you explain why the filter is so ideal besides just the price? Major lack of info besides price tag.

Shouldn't having a sufficient bacteria bed prevent issues of solid waste build up?
I'm keenly interested in aquaponics and moving to Tuscon in a few months.

No, but having a sufficient bacteria bed will eliminate the need for the separate water purifier. A settling tank, a filter, or a spin separator can take out solids. But some folks prefer to leave them in especially in a grow bed for the benefit of the nutrients and just do a periodic cleaning.

Using a swirl filter or drum filter ect to remove solids is a better option. Having a dedicated tank to break them down and then adding them back to the system is the preferred method.

There are many components to learning home aquaponics. One place I discovered that succeeds in merging these is the Keiths Ponics Site (google it if you're interested) without a doubt the best info i've seen. Check out this incredible website.
