I was huge in writing letters in those days. I was way too shy to talk to people in my early HS days. So I let my emotions out in word form. For some reason I flooded Lance’s letter with blue glitter and he kindly wrote back. As did many others bands from the time. Thank you and miss you, Lance. Always love JChurch.
Jchurch is my favorite band of all time . I was blessed to have Lance sign all of my records at a small show a few years before he passed. It’s been a while since I have engulfed myself with them. It’s been 30 years or so of listening to them , but the time around I learned about Husker Du , I know he referenced them in Carolina and Nicole , but didn’t realize how much of an influence they were on lance . Guitar tones , singing style and everything . Many songs I heard and I’m like that sounds like Lance ! So now I would like to go down a rabbit hole of reading articles and watching more video of Jchurch.
Love this band and this show sounds rad. I got a chance to meet Lance at Max's in Hoboken a few months (or so) before he passed. Too bad - he was a brilliant musician, hard working entrepreneur and a genuinely nice guy. Glad i got the chance to meet him, even for just a few minutes.
One of the best punk bands to ever exist and sadly one of the most forgotten. It needs some reissiues of their catalouge, cause there's just a lot of great recordings, that are sometimes rare to find.
They would've been huge if lance looked like some fruity boy band member, unfortunately talent means very little in popular music. I'll take almost any j church album over nirvana's nevermind any day. There are so few j church fans, but whenever I met one I instantly became friends with them.
i agree...i have every album and most 7's on vinyl. lance was a genius, rip. favorite albums ranked: 1. drama of alienation 2. prophylaxis 3. camels, spilled, corona... 4. quetzlcoatl 5. arbor vitae 6. nostalgic for nothing 7. altamont '99
@@craftycounterpuncher2055 nice! I read somewhere that Lance wasn't happy with the way the drama of alienation turned out, and I can't understand why, it's brilliant! I know it's very different from most of the others (I'd say it's production is similar to jawbreakers dear you, in a good way), but almost every song is a classic. Prophylaxis is my number one, then all the others are pretty much even depending on the day. There are only a couple of things I didn't absolutely fall in love with, which were Palestine and the storm the tower split. I'd give anything to hear the demo versions of every album. I wish all bands released their demos, there's a certain charm to demo recordings that should Never be lost (like jawbreaker I love you so much it's killing us both, and jimmy eat world sweetness)
@@scottbaylo good stuff. i think "drama" was their magnum opus in terms songwriting, i hadn't ever really thought about the glossier production, which i guess it is, but it works. i agree on the demos, the one thing lance did do was release so many singles in different studio versions so you feel like you heard most or all of the band's pertinent catalog. sooooo many good songs on 7", too many to even begin listing, but if people get camels, altamont, and nostalgic, they've covered a lot of ground. bottom line, one of the best bands of the 90s but didn't ever reach the levels or recognition of a jawbreaker or green day, although some of the that was by design, lance really didn't care. what lance did was write anarcho punk, but wrote if personally, much like blake s. wrote personally on bivouac and 24 hr.--very tough thing to do. lance was a storyteller.
@@wide_awake no. They had a handful of drummers. Brendan Murdock was one of them, and he illustrated Jawbreaker's "Bivouac" album. That seems to cause some confusion when it comes to the Jawbreaker/JChurch connection. This is Adam, though. I got to spend about a week with them on tour in summer 1993 and it was Brendan drumming at that time in Europe. Fucking even funnier than Adam, and that's saying something.

I loved writing real letters to bands and labels back then. Was so much more meaningful. Text and email just not the same.

After all these years, still so good, so powerful. That first song 'Bomb' is the perfect opening track... RIP Lance ❤
adam pfahler from jawbreaker on the drums. thumping back beat right along with gardner's bass.
Was he always part of the band?? I’m still kind of new to these guys. Freakin amazing by the way
