Those costumed characters are famous mascots from college and the pros.
ESPN is a sports broadcasting network, so that's why they're able to get so many incredible athletes from all sports. It's kind of like Disney being able to make commercials with a bunch of famous actors that have done Disney movies before. But yes, that's a lot of the reason these commercials are so successful and popular is that a viewer will be watching a sport, get a commercial, and one of their favorite athletes from that sport is making jokes and having a good time.
Disney owns ESPN, so that actually makes a lot of sense.

Nah, Larry Fitzgerald is right for that. He's 2nd all time in catches in NFL history, a surefire hall of famer and legend in the game. Still playing too. He'll go down as a top 5 WR, some would say top 3.
A lot of these jokes, you would’ve had to really be in tune with US sports and in the 2000’s and known the athletes personalities a bit to get. Glad you liked it tho!

2:42 The guy doesn't want to get in the elevator with the Devil's mascot when he learns that the Devil wants to go down (i.e. to hell).
9:37 The Penguin mascot (cold) and the Devil mascot (hot) are fighting over the thermostat which is why they put the Do Not Touch sign on it.

Zach Hershman I mean most of them were not that complex... the devil was just alluding to hell, David Ortiz was wearing a rival cap, the speed bump one was a race car driver trying to go fast in the parking lot. If he just paid more attention
H P Part of it was him not paying attention but it was mostly him not knowing enough about what they were joking about. He has no clue Larry Fitzgerald was (is) an insane receiver who can catch anything. He doesn’t know the backstory behind why Tomlinson wearing his helmet was funny. He quite possibly didn’t recognize Ortiz one as having to do with a rival. Most of the mascot commercials went over his head because he had no clue what most of them were. The devil in the elevator was missed because he talked over it.
Part of the joke is obvious that they athletes are their coworkers as that’s how every day work day is where they work..
He definitely understood the faking injuries in soccer one lol
There was a time when every sports fan in America spent every morning watching every minute of SportsCenter. Naturally, athletes wanted to be in these commercials. It isn't like that anymore.

The tree in the 2nd commercial is the mascot for Stanford University
They have a tree for a mascot and a color for their team name...totally makes sense
They left out the one where all the Pirate-themed mascots and McCutchen plunder a random office.
The tree is the mascot of Stanford U. It fainted at hearing about all the wood cutting. The Devil is the New Jersey hockey mascot. Wally the Red Sox mascot saw his star player wearing a Yankees hat, because David Ortiz was doing a favor for the catcher on the Yankees and breaking in his hat. Catchers don't usually wear cloth caps, so his was still new looking, is why. Wally was disgusted and left. The football player LT was teased about how dark he liked his visor for day games, so they made a joke out of that. He can't read with it on. Manny Ramirez had a reputation for doing things a bit weirdly, but here they're teasing the sports media for acting like everything he does is weird even when it isn't.
I think it should be mentioned that Yankees and Red Sox are rival teams, at least with fans
You’ve got to react to Tim Lincecum. He was a really great pitcher for the Giants and won a few World Series rings. His pitches are nasty good

Years ago, there was a series of web based videos/lengthy adverts called "Terry Tate, Office Linebacker". They were genuinely funny.
The one where Dan Patrick hits Stone Cold Steve Austin with a chair was fantastic.
3:44 the mascot in that commercial is the Philly Phanatic, mascot to the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team. He's one of the oldest mascot in sports, going back to 1976.
Oh the 'This is Sportcenter' commercials are classics. Yes, they cover everything from Soccer to NASCAR.
The one with the Nascar guy with the pickax was taking out the speed bump which slow you down....they want to go fast
The David Ortiz joke (the mascots throwing the books down in disbelief) is that he was breaking in a rival teams cap, but the mascot thought he was supporting the team.

I worked at ESPN from 1993-1996, and worked with some of the anchors in these commercials. I happened to be there when they shot a commercial that didn't appear here and that was with Mary Lou Retton. Karl Ravech has one of the best toupees you'll ever see.
Sports Center is *the* sports show in the US, or at least has been way up there for awhile. They cover every sport pretty much which is why it works to get athletes from everywhere.

Reebok did a number of Superbowl commercials featuring "Terrible" Terry Tate...Office Linebacker. You would definitely enjoy them.

I saw in the recommended vids at the end “an American football coach in London” hilarious parody of if an nfl coach was hired by hotspur. You would appreciate it as a soccer fan.
You should react to An American Coach in London: NBC Sports Premier League Film featuring Jason Sudeikis. Its a comedic short film, only 4-5 minutes long that was used to advertise the premier league in the usa.
Sportscenter is the sports show of all sports shows in the US, and it's network, ESPN is the biggest sports network. So it's easy to get a bunch of people to do segments and commercials.

The premise of the commercials was based on the name of the news program, SportsCenter. SportsCenter was supposed to be the center of the sports' world.

The Derek Jeter one with the Phillie Phantic is my favorite. The Phanatic is the best mascot in sports. There’s a great one with Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda & the Phanatic.
You should watch more! There are so many great ones. My 2 favorites are "Is It Weird" and "The Manning Brothers".

Sports Center is the sports "News" show of ESPN . Trade deals, highlights, suspensions, top plays, stuff like that.
Obviously the commercials are based on Inside jokes that sports fans would understand
But they also give viewers the impression that ESPN is the ultimate authority in sports in a funny way. Branding!!

ESPN covers all sports news around the world and in the USA for American TV. I just wish they still did little commercials like this.

There are so many little things you can forget to appreciate about your culture until you see it through an outsider's eyes. I do half-wish you had an American pal with you to explain those details that would make it funnier for you if you knew the reference. But all the same, loving your vids...keep it up!!

Tbh with you, Steve Smith Sr is one of the best wide receivers of the 2000s. A very aggressive, fluid, and fundamentally sound wide receiver. You should check his highlights.
Larry Fitzgerald or Larry Fitz was the #11 guy for the Cardinals that was catching everything. He has more tackles than dropped passes. He has 39 tackles and 29 drops. He will be going into his 17th season.
This didn't even have the Peyton and Eli commercial or the Hip Hip Jorge! with Posada lol still good though
ESPN used to be huge. Sports Center was basically a sports news and highlights show. They would give you the scores of the games from yesterday and show the highlights from those games. Back when these commercials aired, Sports Center was must watch TV for half the American male population. ESPN would air their one hour long morning Sports Center program three times in a row.....and dudes would just watch it over again. I know I did.
Sadly, today it isn't anywhere close to being as good as it used to be, just like most of the rest of the ESPN lineup. The drop in ratings shows it.
