18:18 And this is why I ignored that V12 Celica from 5 days ago and RAPIDLY clicked on this. It's all well and good having something slammed with massive arches and some OTT engine swap, but Stephen Papadakis did the arguably more difficult thing and _respected the spirit of the car._ The moment I laid eyes on those Mikunis I knew this dude had built a winner. This isn't that wild a car, but it's a proper Celica. I guess I'd expect nothing less from this guy.
It's hilarious seeing him talk about the celica like a "noob". So much experience in motorsports, but you can tell this is all new and exciting to him. Funny and refreshing that someone so experienced can be so inexperienced at the same time. Love it
RUclips channel Sarah-N-Tuned is doing a great job building one of these, in a "resto-mod" style - but with a Toyota v8 and supporting mods. Hers will be pretty awesome as well. The whole build is being documented on her channel.

More of an old muscle car guy but grew up around these. Late 70s to 80s Toyotas were super popular and reliable. 20r and 22r engines were like mules just keep going.
I love that he drove the car to find out what the weak points were and where he wanted to modify. So many people just throw parts at a car without finding out what it needs first.
Hello from Australia My first car back in 1983 was a 1975 TA22 Celica with original GT interior ,the engine was the 1600cc fitted with a KKK Turbo suck through SU carbi with water injection. No intercoolers or EFI back then . I bought the car from my late brother in-law who bought the car from new and built the engine . great to see the Ta celica’s getting much deserved luv . Cheers 🇦🇺👍
Everything about this custom build is amazing but that brake setup is GENIUS!! It's fun when you have the knowledge to do these things... I'm jealous...
Such a cool car. Reminds me of those old Datsun 5's. That Z next to it was gorgeous too. If only automakers would take a chance a make a car like this again. Just no frills whatsoever, lightweight, good power to weight. Basically a superior GR86, with this styling, and keep the costs down for younger people to embrace earlier on to keep car passion hobby alive and well.
Try a pair of Webber 45 DCOE and it will wake up the car. Also, your cams should be at least 304/288 mix with 10.8 MM lift. These 18RG and 2TG love high CR pistons. 11.75:1 CR is just what the doctor ordered. I wouldn't do without my AC either, so it means you need at least a 3-row radiator to keep thing in check. Great project. Great coverage Larry.
very nice build. I started my restoration on my 1973 celica 9ish years ago. I thinking this spring I'll have it on the road late spring. I noticed that there are a lot of these first gen celiacs at SEMA this year. When I started my build there seemed to be no one else building them on RUclips. Now there seems to be a huge popularity for them.
I really loved this video probably cause I’m such a huge fan of Stephen papadakis. He’s the guy that really got me in to romanticizing builds and ideas in mind, and his style is my favorite in the way he makes his videos too and how he treats things.
I had 2 dual throat sidedraft Dellorto 45s on a 2 litre. Once they’d been set up and tuned properly, including a custom linkage, they performed flawlessly all the time.
Great colour! My first car was a TA22 celica 5sp, never came as a GT in Australia, but plenty got the twincam motors in the 80s, get complete twin cam side draughts etc low ks from API, they would have been getting all for scrap value.
i was expecting a real simple build from the exterior but I was surprised with all the intricate details and modern updated never would of expected that, but then again we are talking about Papadakis he does some amazing work!
Cool to see Steph do this Celica and where he’s gone. Remember him back in the day when he was at JG engine dynamics and not knowing much about cars or Hondas to now he’s an icon.
I learned to drive manual on my mom's 1977 Celica. That car was a hoot to drive but scary AF in the rain. I love all these old Toyota builds that have been popping up on RUclips this last year
in the 80s these were HS kid, grannys cars. This one is super nice, had an 84 Toyota truck that exact same color. Nice to see some old school Toys getting attention
When I worked for Toyota GB, here in England, we all loved absolutely thrashing company TA22 Celicas, particularly the 1.6 litre twin-cam versions. Personally I've always fancied a TA22 Celica coupe with the later 4 A-GE motor transplanted into it
In 1976, Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year was the Toyota Celica hatchback. Selling Toyota's in Bloomington, the boss son's '72 Celica was mine to drive for a time. IMO, the restraint is what makes the car and its ethos… so desirable

So personally I think this is one of the most beautiful cars toyota ever built.

After the 2000GT, this is their most beautiful car, IMO.
Not having that car is making me super Jelica
You almost had the perfect joke and it’s Supra annoying
@kevinyech984 I’ll admit, your comment wins the gold, while mine takes Silverado
What would be third place then, Bronco or Cupra?
@Random_banshee Third would be the mini copper

Beautiful restoration with proper powetrain. The sidedrafts never gets old...the sound it makes is just amazing.

Classmate bought his Dads 510 back in the 70s, from stock to flared, Enkeis built engine 4 pt etc. Mulholland was real popular back then.
If Papadakis married one chassis, I think he could do something very similar to Singer. His mindset sets him apart from the majority.

My daily drive when i was an apprentice mechanic 25 years ago was a 72 celica with that Yamaha motor
