Another observation I would like to make to you is that most everything you see in culinary knowledge and skills, IS without question, the distilled knowledge of everyday people gained through thousands of years of experience. He’s remembering, without notes, the exact dates when those crucial moments, meetings and interviews took place. Some 30+ years after. Just proving how meaningful they are to him.
I think that’s a big part of todays issues in the West. We have “educated” people telling young people they have all these problems and unfortunately for most, they believe it. You have boys with a tonne of energy drugged because they have “ADHD” when in reality that’s the natural state of kids and sitting in a classroom is unnatural. Yet they’ll hormonally change you to fit you roughly into their puzzle piece. Quite fascinating.

This came up as a random hit on youtube and couldn't stop watching. Mr White is a far more complex character than the first impression of an arrogant, bad tempered blowhard. After watching this it's apparent he is a man more driven by passion for his work than anything else. I must say, he kinda grows on you and his passion for his job lifts the heart. Good on you Mr White.
He exudes a rare intensity. I had never heard his name, but I knew all the names of the chefs he mentioned. The pressure in the kitchen of a top tier restaurant is akin to the pressure in an ICU right now.
I'm absolutely stunned at the fact he didn't stutter for an entire hour. How the hell do you tell a story without saying "Umm" a single time? Fucking incredible.
This single interview inspired me to quit my degree in chemistry and begin working as a chef. 6 months later and 1000s spent on ingredients, hours upon hours slaving away in my kitchen burnt, cut and scalded to hell, tomorrow I start in my first fine dining chef job. Don't underestimate the power of words. This man is a true living genius. Eccentric as fuck but genius none the less.
It's insane how consistent he is at telling his experiences. I watched 6 different interviews with him about his first time working and where he came from and he says it ALWAYS the same, not one detail different. He is the pinnacle of memory.
It’s more that this is a well rehearsed and well worn performance by him, and he can railroad some poor student interviewer with it. Other journalists have expressed frustration with how tiresome he is to interview because he just wants to stick to this well-worn working class bootstrap stuff. I’m surprised the adulation in the comment section here, but it shows the value of media-savviness i suppose.
I love Marco, but if someone retells the same story, exactly the same down to the very last details multiple times consistently, it means it is a well rehearsed story. If someone is speaking a true story from the heart there will be small details that are different every time, because that's simply how the human mind works. Unless of course you have written the story out and very well rehearsed and memorised it.

I had a career as a hair stylist for 30 years from assistant to owner. I have just arrived at my second year in multiple kitchens looking for the right fit for me. Ive been to other places where the food was also good and the ambience was great tbh he is right at least in my eyes when im out for a restaurant dinner i wanna eat but also enjoy myself while doing it. And yes ambience is indeed higher priority than food in my eyes but both need to have quality ^^.
This talk from Marco was my inspiration to apply for a cook's position at a fine dining restaurant while I was a student in Germany. Like Marco, I emailed restaurants instead of knocking on their doors :) I did a trial with an Irish chef named Shane McMahon. The restaurant adventure did not work out due to visa issues, but Marco's speech made a huge impression on me and continues to inspire me in the kitchen to this day. Thank you very much Marco!
I helped decorate his first restaurant in London . As is typical with these projects , everything was last-minute and we worked into the night . Marco was quite calm and respectful though , despite the fact that the place was opening the next day . When there were alternative ways something might be done , he would go around the room asking people's opinions instead of dictating and throwing tantrums like other successful people I worked for
The moment when you think to your self: " oh, i might click on this video about Marco Pierre White. Might be interesting. I´ll just dig in for a couple minutes" and end up watching the whole thing. The way he told his story kept me here haha. I liked it :)

He is such a fascinatingly complex individual. Incredibly self-composed yet very vulnerable at the same time. Totally self-assured yet confortable showing two gratitude to others. You get the sense he admires his young self very much but was also terrified of what drove him to such heights.
Listening to this and hearing Marco say how he was ruled by fear of failure made me rethink my own life. Marco used his fear of failure in order to better himself and push past his mental and physical limits, whereas I let my fear of failure stop me from even trying to do anything. Definitely made me feel silly about getting nervous over starting a new job when back in Marco's day, he had less resources to work with than I do today, yet he kept going and found his way. 100% making a change in my life, what a legend. Thank you Marco Pierre White.
There is something extremely impressive about Marco's ability to recall people's names, addresses, dates and specific details of events throughout his life. I don't even recall the date I first met the mrs!

This man is the reason I'm a cook aspiring to be a chef. I love Gordon Ramsay, he's one of my idols, but this man is the *reason* I cook for a living. His understanding of food is unlike any chef in the world, and his work ethic is unmatched. He is truly a god among men in gastronomy.

Not too hard. Im currently in a public speech course. You can eliminate 80 percent of your uhs if you just think about it before hand and make a conscious note not to. I f you just pause instead, your overall speech seems more dramatic, which is a good thing.

It's about his formative years talking about a time when he was, in his own words "ruled by fear". Times of great change and tumultuous events really stick with you. I myself can speak very very detailed about times I started life changing hobbies. And periods where I struggled at work or in a relationship. Almost down to the color of underwear and times I took a piss on the worst days. I can totally see where he's coming from with this. For me and most others these events are spread throughout our lives. From his story it sounds like this was his entire upbringing. I can totally see it making a massive mark on him.
The man has a way to just hook you. From the moment he started his story, I couldn’t put the video down. He’s humble, yet serious, but in a way that just draws you in with sincerity. It’s truly amazing

Was a different time. Things are a lot more expensive now, and he got pretty lucky. Obviously working hard increases your odds of success, but it's definitely not a guarantee.

Also it's all relative: things may be more expensive today but people get paid far more than they did back then so no difference. Tbf he never said it's just about working hard + he readily admitted on so many occasions it was down to luck. He lists a number of things that helped him became suuccesful but the one he really stressed was grabbing opportunities - absolutely no different than today.
I've watched this around 40+ times and I've read his auto biography 'the devil in the kitchen' countless times, I'm a chef myself working in a 2 Michelin star restaurant and I have to say marco is the most honest chef ever. Chefs (especially top chefs in top restaurants around the world) romantasisze the life of a chef, cooking beautiful food with a smile on there face, and in some cases that is true but they leave out the hardship and blood, sweat, burns and tears it takes to get to the top, the none existant social life and lost friendships and marco has never hid those facts he was and always has been 100% honest about the industry at the top level

I think him being from Yorkshire and working class background has a lot do with it. He's obviously proud and talked with affection about his early days and the area he grew up in. It's straight talk, blunt, honest, from the heart. That's all characteristic of many Yorkshire folk, especially his generation.
Very outstanding storyteller. I will have to read that book now. I saw it many years back, and was intrigued by the title. He exudes the tough grit, of discipline, and hard work. A good food/chef movie I liked was, "The Hundred Foot Journey." Very good.

The ending really took me by surprise and hit hard. When you work so hard to achieve something and then realise it was never what you wanted... you finally learn to go after what makes you happy. I'm glad Marco White is where he's at today. Most insightful part of his story,imo
That's true for many people. They're always chasing what society told them to. (Assuming it'll make them happy. Also fear of failure as he pointed out.) And when they get there, there's vacuum. No happiness. No drive/motivation. That's when you figure out what you really want or at least try to figure out...

Everyone talks about working hard or working smart or doing what you love. Nobody talks about how luck is a part of it. And Marco is right. I got downsized from one my jobs which I hated and was in it for 5 years. For 5 years I tried really hard to get a good job. I worked hard and I was honest. Then I got a job in a SE Asian country. The salary was much lower and I went from living in a nice 2 bedroom apartment in a city to a tiny room in the middle of the jungle. Then I landed a much better job in the same country. The kind of job i wanted for 5 years. If I hadn’t taken the flight, if I hadn’t taken that first job, I would still be struggling and be unhappy. It was luck that I came to this country. And it was luck that someone found my profile through LinkedIn. Luck is a part of success. And that’s something people don’t talk about
He was like that when he was young. He obviously knows a great deal of French at this point. Not to mention the thousands of hours he worked in the nicest hotels and restaurants in the world around his time. You soak up and learn from your environment. He went into a whole new world, quite literally.

I had the privilege of meeting Marco in 2017. I have always thought he has had intense and piercing eyes but meeting him face to face... my God.. his eyes hit you like a sledgehammer, looking deep into your soul. He was such a down to earth, gracious and humble man to speak with and I was lucky enough to be able to thank him for what he did for the world of gastronomy and the inspiration he provided me, along with countless others I'm sure. An absolute legend and a wonderful human being.
mario condello there is no such thing as a self made man, we are the sum parts of every individual we come in contact with, some good and some bad. It’s our job to take the good parts and the bad parts and then form our character with those we decide to keep.
Marco even said himself his journey to his first star was basically just him working hard, building courage to knock on doors and stumbling into good opportunity, after opportunity. And when he wanted to achieve all his stars his success is based off the people he surrounded himself with. People like Marco will never say they are self made, it's a smug attitude, once you take on that attitude you have flown to close to the sun, and will fall hard. Being humble is one of the most important aspects of success.

Marco definitely gets a bad rap (just as most driven people do) but he really is a kind, thoughtful, soul with a mind for helping others, just as others did for him. He simply has no patience for laziness or incompetence.

He's actually the most humble man. He blames it on luck. He seriously believes it's all luck. While luck definitely has a part to play it in it all, it's certainly not just luck Marco. You made your foundation as a chef by determination and passion, you found your way through some doorways by perseverance and strength, you helped your friend as you watched him destroy himself without judging him, only with compassion and care for nothing in return. You found your way to the top with nothing but a sincere nature for what you cared about doing, being a chef. I know he'll never read that, but seriously, this man is the epitome of what it means to be successful.
I think he's very wise in the sense of luck. He makes it clear, perhaps less so in this address but more so in other talks and texts, that he knows he worked incredibly hard, but he's also aware that he was only given the opportunity to better himself, through hard work, by the string of good luck that came his way. I would say that White expresses a rare realism with regard to aspiration. He knows that to be a great chef you have to work incredibly hard, but he also knows that a lot of hard-working chefs have never had the chance to rise as high as him. And that's what gives his stories greater inspiration, because it's not a simple tale of someone wanting something and then achieving it.
I’m glad I’ve found this comment. Luck is chance taken personally. But Marco saw chances and used determination and blind confidence to be where he is. I wish he saw it the same.

Your statement assumes that those being criticized are at such a level that only those at the very pinnacle would be capable of such observations and I am here to tell you that is a faulty assumption. Another observation I would like to make to you is that most everything you see in culinary knowledge and skills, IS without question, the distilled knowledge of everyday people gained through thousands of years of experience. Not the elites.
He’s remembering, without notes, the exact dates when those crucial moments, meetings and interviews took place. Some 30+ years after. Just proving how meaningful they are to him.
Part of what makes him so great is that he sees and appreciates the significance in everything, he’s truly a truthful character
He did poorly in school, is dyslexic, and still has better storytelling skills and wider vocabulary than most people.
I think that’s a big part of todays issues in the West. We have “educated” people telling young people they have all these problems and unfortunately for most, they believe it. You have boys with a tonne of energy drugged because they have “ADHD” when in reality that’s the natural state of kids and sitting in a classroom is unnatural. Yet they’ll hormonally change you to fit you roughly into their puzzle piece. Quite fascinating.

This came up as a random hit on youtube and couldn't stop watching. Mr White is a far more complex character than the first impression of an arrogant, bad tempered blowhard. After watching this it's apparent he is a man more driven by passion for his work than anything else. I must say, he kinda grows on you and his passion for his job lifts the heart. Good on you Mr White.
He exudes a rare intensity. I had never heard his name, but I knew all the names of the chefs he mentioned. The pressure in the kitchen of a top tier restaurant is akin to the pressure in an ICU right now.
I love his voice and his attitude. I watched him on master chef Australia and he is a very kind man.

This single interview inspired me to quit my degree in chemistry and begin working as a chef. 6 months later and 1000s spent on ingredients, hours upon hours slaving away in my kitchen burnt, cut and scalded to hell, tomorrow I start in my first fine dining chef job.

It's insane how consistent he is at telling his experiences. I watched 6 different interviews with him about his first time working and where he came from and he says it ALWAYS the same, not one detail different. He is the pinnacle of memory.
It’s more that this is a well rehearsed and well worn performance by him, and he can railroad some poor student interviewer with it. Other journalists have expressed frustration with how tiresome he is to interview because he just wants to stick to this well-worn working class bootstrap stuff. I’m surprised the adulation in the comment section here, but it shows the value of media-savviness i suppose.
I love Marco, but if someone retells the same story, exactly the same down to the very last details multiple times consistently, it means it is a well rehearsed story. If someone is speaking a true story from the heart there will be small details that are different every time, because that's simply how the human mind works. Unless of course you have written the story out and very well rehearsed and memorised it.

This talk from Marco was my inspiration to apply for a cook's position at a fine dining restaurant while I was a student in Germany. Like Marco, I emailed restaurants instead of knocking on their doors :) I did a trial with an Irish chef named Shane McMahon. The restaurant adventure did not work out due to visa issues, but Marco's speech made a huge impression on me and continues to inspire me in the kitchen to this day. Thank you very much Marco!
I helped decorate his first restaurant in London . As is typical with these projects , everything was last-minute and we worked into the night . Marco was quite calm and respectful though , despite the fact that the place was opening the next day . When there were alternative ways something might be done , he would go around the room asking people's opinions instead of dictating and throwing tantrums like other successful people I worked for

He is such a fascinatingly complex individual. Incredibly self-composed yet very vulnerable at the same time. Totally self-assured yet confortable showing two gratitude to others. You get the sense he admires his young self very much but was also terrified of what drove him to such heights.
Listening to this and hearing Marco say how he was ruled by fear of failure made me rethink my own life. Marco used his fear of failure in order to better himself and push past his mental and physical limits, whereas I let my fear of failure stop me from even trying to do anything. Definitely made me feel silly about getting nervous over starting a new job when back in Marco's day, he had less resources to work with than I do today, yet he kept going and found his way. 100% making a change in my life, what a legend. Thank you Marco Pierre White.

It's about his formative years talking about a time when he was, in his own words "ruled by fear". Times of great change and tumultuous events really stick with you. I myself can speak very very detailed about times I started life changing hobbies. And periods where I struggled at work or in a relationship. Almost down to the color of underwear and times I took a piss on the worst days.
I can totally see where he's coming from with this. For me and most others these events are spread throughout our lives. From his story it sounds like this was his entire upbringing. I can totally see it making a massive mark on him.

That’s one of the biggest mistakes I’ve made in life as well. During a very intense candy flip trip, I realized I have EVERYTHING I need to be successful.
Was a different time. Things are a lot more expensive now, and he got pretty lucky. Obviously working hard increases your odds of success, but it's definitely not a guarantee.

Also it's all relative: things may be more expensive today but people get paid far more than they did back then so no difference. Tbf he never said it's just about working hard + he readily admitted on so many occasions it was down to luck. He lists a number of things that helped him became suuccesful but the one he really stressed was grabbing opportunities - absolutely no different than today.
I've watched this around 40+ times and I've read his auto biography 'the devil in the kitchen' countless times, I'm a chef myself working in a 2 Michelin star restaurant and I have to say marco is the most honest chef ever. Chefs (especially top chefs in top restaurants around the world) romantasisze the life of a chef, cooking beautiful food with a smile on there face, and in some cases that is true but they leave out the hardship and blood, sweat, burns and tears it takes to get to the top, the none existant social life and lost friendships and marco has never hid those facts he was and always has been 100% honest about the industry at the top level

I think him being from Yorkshire and working class background has a lot do with it. He's obviously proud and talked with affection about his early days and the area he grew up in. That's true for many people. They're always chasing what society told them to. (Assuming it'll make them happy. Also fear of failure as he pointed out.) And when they get there, there's vacuum. No happiness. No drive/motivation. That's when you figure out what you really want or at least try to figure out...
This was art. He is simultaneously the most intimidating yet absorbing person I have ever had the joy of listening to. And if nothing else my knowledge of how to work eggs has been permanently altered.

When you put that much effort into your work, its easy to talk about your work. He probably didn't practice for this speech but he worked hard enough, so as a consequence he's able to tell his story so well.

Everyone talks about working hard or working smart or doing what you love. Nobody talks about how luck is a part of it. And Marco is right.
I got downsized from one my jobs which I hated and was in it for 5 years. For 5 years I tried really hard to get a good job. I worked hard and I was honest. Then I got a job in a SE Asian country. The salary was much lower and I went from living in a nice 2 bedroom apartment in a city to a tiny room in the middle of the jungle. Then I landed a much better job in the same country. The kind of job i wanted for 5 years. If I hadn’t taken the flight, if I hadn’t taken that first job, I would still be struggling and be unhappy. It was luck that I came to this country. And it was luck that someone found my profile through LinkedIn. Luck is a part of success. And that’s something people don’t talk about

He was like that when he was young. He obviously knows a great deal of French at this point. Not to mention the thousands of hours he worked in the nicest hotels and restaurants in the world around his time. You soak up and learn from your environment. He went into a whole new world, quite literally.

I had the privilege of meeting Marco in 2017. I have always thought he has had intense and piercing eyes but meeting him face to face... my God.. his eyes hit you like a sledgehammer, looking deep into your soul.
He was such a down to earth, gracious and humble man to speak with and I was lucky enough to be able to thank him for what he did for the world of gastronomy and the inspiration he provided me, along with countless others I'm sure. An absolute legend and a wonderful human being.

Marco even said himself his journey to his first star was basically just him working hard, building courage to knock on doors and stumbling into good opportunity, after opportunity. And when he wanted to achieve all his stars his success is based off the people he surrounded himself with.
People like Marco will never say they are self made, it's a smug attitude, once you take on that attitude you have flown to close to the sun, and will fall hard. Being humble is one of the most important aspects of success.

Marco definitely gets a bad rap (just as most driven people do) but he really is a kind, thoughtful, soul with a mind for helping others, just as others did for him. He simply has no patience for laziness or incompetence.

He's actually the most humble man. He blames it on luck. He seriously believes it's all luck. While luck definitely has a part to play it in it all, it's certainly not just luck Marco. You made your foundation as a chef by determination and passion, you found your way through some doorways by perseverance and strength, you helped your friend as you watched him destroy himself without judging him, only with compassion and care for nothing in return. You found your way to the top with nothing but a sincere nature for what you cared about doing, being a chef. I know he'll never read that, but seriously, this man is the epitome of what it means to be successful.
I think he's very wise in the sense of luck. He makes it clear, perhaps less so in this address but more so in other talks and texts, that he knows he worked incredibly hard, but he's also aware that he was only given the opportunity to better himself, through hard work, by the string of good luck that came his way. I would say that White expresses a rare realism with regard to aspiration. He knows that to be a great chef you have to work incredibly hard, but he also knows that a lot of hard-working chefs have never had the chance to rise as high as him. And that's what gives his stories greater inspiration, because it's not a simple tale of someone wanting something and then achieving it.
I’m glad I’ve found this comment. Luck is chance taken personally. But Marco saw chances and used determination and blind confidence to be where he is. I wish he saw it the same.
If I may, the point he is making is that a man makes his own luck, simply by seizing the opportunity. Every man will be presented with a luck-fueled opportunity, a successful man is defined by being able to seize that opportunity.
He acknowledged that it was mostly hard work and being hardy.
Basically, to be successful, you have to be someone's bitch and sponge for their abuse.
