Couple of nice patterns. Light taps is the proper method. I flew F-4Es back in the late 70s. You never want to run the trim in either direction. Tap, tap, tap constantly. If you are holding stick pressure to maintain flight conditions, you are doing it wrong. I don't fly the sim yet, just getting into DCS (kind of tired of COD) so just reviewing the instruction vids posted by experienced DCS guys. Your video here is the first I have seen dedicated to trim technique. Wondering if you can feel stick pressure if you are out of trim if you don't have a FFB stick.
@rburkholder100, I am so pleased that you watched and commented! There is no better source of feedback/critique for this content than an actual Phantom Phlyer. If (or when?) you do get the F-4 module, it would be incredible to hear your thoughts and learn nuances on a flight or two. In the meantime, please consider coming to the Silverbeards (discord.gg/GrXd4BPG) and Mean Old Bastards (discord.gg/Epumx276) discord channels and say hi. Both servers are run by pilots (I'm retired USAF, and Hammer is single/multi instrument certified). Would be great to have you in our community! In answer to your FFB question, I use a Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, so the 'stick pressure' is just from the spring in the stick. It's definitely not the same as a real aircraft sensation, but with practice you can train to it. Essentially, you trim to relieve the spring pressure on the stick. Thank you for checking out the channel, and hope to hear more from you!
Excellent! I feel that having your control overlay would give another level of depth to your description - especially with something as granular as trim settings.
Hiya @Cees - thank you for your comment! I flew the KC-135, MQ-1 and MC-12. After I retired from the USAF, I qualified in the MQ-9 and flew another 5 years as a contractor.
Thank you for your service! And for the video . F4 has always intrigued me since i was kid.. took the airline path.. but now the chance to try this beast on. Hard work though.. but lots of fun learning
I wish Jester had two flavors: “as is” and “Jack Webb” mode (and voice). “Just the facts, ma’am,” monotone, with no excitement or snide remarks…’cause I can’t take the ribbing, man! 😄 “Don’t get excited, Jester, it’s just training mission.” 😄 Also, it’s annoying when he asks if the fuel’s okay when I’m on short final. I mean, once he’s read the landing checklist, or if the gear is down, he shouldn’t ask that. With AI voice resources now we should be able to put Jack Webb (Joe Friday) in the back seat…or even Barbara Eden (Jeannie), if we want. Or old Obi Wan Kenobi. 😄. If there was a voice file generator app, we could make Jester in different languages.
Man!! Jester was going psycho on you. That’s weird. I’ve never heard him repeat a stupid-sounding remark 3 times in a row like that. Wow. He must have known you were making a RUclips video and was hamming it up. I think there’s a “contract” setting to have Jester shut up. As for the trim: that’s pretty much the method I developed on my own. It’s nice to know it’s the right way, though. Btw, in the Nevada map, try landing at Laughlin/Bullhead City airport, Rwy 34, and tell me if there is an airport boundary fence that’s way too close for comfort on short final. Or if I’m just getting too low.
I DO have a "Jester - Shut Up" command programmed in voice attack... but with all the prep work for the video I had pretty much tuned him out! I'll check out Laughlin in DCS - I flew over it IRL when I flew for a small company in Vegas, but that was almost 10 years ago.
@@kojakgaming3519 Ha, ha! I didn’t think of Vader. “The rebel base is there! Prepare for attack! Make sure you do not miss, THIS TIME…Captain Needa! Every time your plane takes gunfire hits: “WHAAT?!” Every time you fire a missile at a target: “All too easy.” When activating the Master Arm switch: “This will be a day long remembered.” Radar tracking a bandit: “If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally.” And when locked: “He will join us or die!” When in position for gun kill: “He’s all yours, bounty hunter.” When you miss a target for the second time: “Do not fail me again, admiral.” When it’s time to eject: “You are beaten! It is useless to resist.” Or, “You have failed me for the last time.” When you tell Jester (Vader) to change to a specific radar scan: “I find your lack of faith disturbing.” When you destroy a target: “The force is with you, young skywalker, but you are not a Jedi yet.” If you frag one of your side: “You are part of the rebel alliance and a traitor!” Every time you complete a 360 turn: “The circle is now complete,” And when you bring up the Jester menu the first time: “What is thy bidding, my master?” Or, “Your destiny lies with me, Skywalker. Obi wan knew this to be true.”
I don't understand where you're going with this comment regarding the term "properly". Sounds like you're dealing in absolutes for a simulation. The technique I demonstrate works to get the simulated aircraft into a trimmed condition, and has nothing to do with "properly" trimming. I'll clarify what appears to be your position by stating that you will never "properly" trim a simulation aircraft because there are no actual aerodynamic forces acting on actual control surfaces, regardless of spring or FFB stick conditions.
I could trim with out force feed back in a spring only analogue joystick back in the 90s. Yes it doesn't feel natural with out the force feedback and you absolutely need to watch your vertical speed and AoA but its fun and necessary for long flights and landings. I was lucky that back in the day they had actual trim wheels for pitch n yaw in that thing so now i struggle with the trim switch!

Again great work. Nice patterns. Agree completely with the fast taps to trim. Fly by the numbers! Keep it up!
Boots! Always great to get your feedback - thank you for watching and posting. Keep coming back for more!
Thank you so much!
Gotta love Jester
Some days, there's just no pleasing the GIB 🤪 Hope the inset video provided some decent 'light-trim-tap' examples!

Great call Jake - controls indicator will be up on future applicable instruction - great input!
@ED, here's your future voice over guy
😄 Thanks man! Maybe they'd let me fill in if Wags takes a vacation 😆
Between him and Sidekick it'd be an all-star cast!
Awesome video!!!
Thank you Justin!!
How did I miss this? I work too much!!!! LOL
Jester 🤣 Nice approach. Don't let that jerk get you down.
Hey Cale! Thank you - can't please the GIB all the time!
Hey Kojak, i am new to your channel. Love your proper instructor patter.. very helpful in learning the f4. What did you fly in usaf?

What setting do you have the pipper at when landing?
A-G 225 mils
Also Mark, if you watch through ruclips.net/video/eBrdsS17pks/видео.html (my how to fly a 3 degree glideslope video), it explains the why!
You will never trim properly without FFB stick. By the way I can see that your stick gimball would need re-grease maintenance.
