- The second boil of the season has begun! The evaporator is working well so far as I am able to tweak how I burn and finally collect some real wood.

I have to say this you are the beat homestead channel for me , you are not a mega rich guy playing an act and buying super expensive machines and call it "homesteading" nor do you pretend like you know everything its refreshing to see someone who truly is just like us
The smell of sap boiling down is one of our favorites! Thank you for sharing!
Never realized what went behind making maple syrup. Thanks for sharing how you do that.
I just started tapping and got the evaporator sat up ready to go this yr 2021
I hope God blesses you with extra awesome maple syrup this season.
I’m boiling sap while watching this and when you said you were putting wood in it reminded me to put wood in
I always like and appreciate the process of the maple syrup videos. It looks like it's fun to do and so rewarding. Till next time, God bless.
WE CAN SMELL IT FROM HERE !! SMELLS SO GOOD !!
Great video I just started my first season got 55 taps out and enjoying every minute of it
Lookit that! Your evaporator works just fine!! I don't see any problems with it but I do smell mapel sap in the air! Nice job SSL Dad (Todd)! LOL! Shalom and Blessings!
I just found your channel after looking into doing Maple Syrup with my kids, like I did with my grandpa when I was young. Some of my best memories!!! Thank you for the great info.
From a fellow Michigander
My father built a cinderblock fire pit like yours just to burn some things safely around the place. By the time we got the property and moved up here, it had crumbled. We scooped it up and used the crumbled block in areas that needed erosion control. Your fire pit won't last forever, but that's OK since it can be rebuilt cheaply. I loved your truck when I saw it collecting the sap, and then saw your windshield had a big crack in it. I'd get that windshield replaced as it is a shame to have a beautiful truck with a broken windshield. I live down south and we don't have snow and maples that sap out in the spring, so we're not as lucky as you to make maple syrup. Thanks for the video.
May want to consider using a filtering funnel when filling the IBC tote. Also wrapping the tote with reflectix or the like to help insulate so it doesn't freeze. I am making syrup for the first time this year. 12 trees and 194 gallons of sap so far
my folks had a funnel with filter for milk
194 gallons out of 12 trees? Must be some awesomely big trees. I got 8. One silver maple, rest or sugars. I have 3 big ones that are my major producers, and the others are just barely big enough to tap.
Thanks for this. Great video.
I miss maple trees. 35 years ago, ten year old me loved visiting the maple farms on school field trips. Now I live in Alberta Canada and maple trees don't grow here, it's just too cold.
It's lots of work. Smells great when cooking and taste better
cool stuff
QUICKER BOIL
Thanks for sharing your informative video about evaporating maple tree sap.
Some questions come to mind:
Q1: Does wood provide a "quicker" boil that natural gas, propane, butane or other fuel? Apparently, the metric for a "quicker" boil is gallons of sap per hour out of a given evaporator pan of specific Length x Width x Depth and Percent Capacity.
Q2: In what qualities does a "quicker" boil produce a "better" sap? What is the metric for a "better" sap quality? Viscosity? Smoothness? Consistency?
Q3: When tap water is boiled, the evaporating water carries away all of the minerals to produce pure H20. When fresh vegetables are boiled in water, the evaporating steam carries away minerals, vitamins and living enzymes that are leeched from the vegetables. When maple sap is boiled, does the maple-fragrant evaporating steam carry away the minerals, vitamins and living enzymes of the maple syrup?
Q4: Does wood-fired sap produce a different flavor of syrup? If so, what is the taste of wood-fired sap compared to other-fuel-fired sap? Would a blindfolded person be able to detect a difference in taste?
Maybe in the future an reverse osmosis machine. Or possibly make one. thanks for taking the time.
It might be worth the time to look at a site called R.O IN A BUCKET. It takes about 5 hours to reduce 40 gallons of sap to 20 gallons with 2 times the sugar content. Is relatively cheap compred to the larger systems
makes me remember the nights i spent in the sugar shack on a similar masonry firebox and flat pan set up. that was about 30 years ago. i used the wood i could scrounge off the land on the fly and pallets also. next steps are a small sugar shack, stored dry wood, a small evaporator with flue pan and getting to sleep at night.
Avalanche putting in work
Ok when Todd whipped out the hair dryer. Did you think does he think he is going to thaw out all that sap with that hair dryer. Lol
What size(s) of bottles do you use when you bottle the maple syrup. You sell a certain amount and how would I who lives in Macomb Twp. MI., go about buying a bottle? Have a good day and week...GOD BLESS you and your family...keep up the hard work you do daily.
Hi from Eaton County, Michigan
Good morning@@mrmacgregorshomestead233 ...have a great day.
I bottle in 12 oz bottles, we will have it up on our website for sale soon!
Praise the Lord for what you are doing keep him in your life
Thanks for sharing 👍
Boy you work fast. I am always amazed at how so many watchers know more than you or many other homesteaders do.
The maple addiction catches another haha, I would highly recommend getting an evaporator with a flue pan in in the very least a flue pan and a divided syrup pan and build your own evaporator, I know there expensive but, if you look around enough especially at the end of the season or in the fall you can find a good deal, you'll save so much time and wood you'll wish you would have switched over a long time ago.
Pro tip
A weed burner works better for starting fires.
😁
Absolutely loved it! Thank you for showing us the process of making maple syrup. So fascinating 😁🍁
Nice 👍
We would love to trade a pound of our honey for a bottle of your syrup!!!
would love to get some from both of you do you have dark honey fr rapp from wakita ok
I built a similar evaporator . Do you think spraying water on the fire cracks the bricks? I had 5 cinderblocks crack and I’m blaming the water ha..
Yeah, my last one had a lot of pitting and cracking after I sprayed water on the hit blocks. It's going to happen out since they are filled with dirt and cement it doesn't matter
Liquid Gold!
I love your videos!
Wonderful video! Are you going to give away a few free samples?
How will we be able to acquire some of your syrup once it's ready?
Butter helps it from burning and overflowing the cooker
New cooker seems to be working great! Nice work. Q: where did you get that large evaporator pan?
It seems to have been a custom build, my mom used to use it for their setup and I got it from her
Oh wow, amazing. Heirloom evaporator!
wow never been this early
great vid btw, love to see the maple syrup process
"wrong bit" i went and bought some double ended bits 2 sized torx , philips and strait and 2 sizes square. going to need to put a guy wire on the stove pipe, btw Wheres the gator , wife cj say the syrup looks good . best from oklahoma
Is the flooding an ice damming issue or a beaver issue?
hi, if you start a regular pan at 3 inches of sap how much should it boil down to ? 1/2 inch 1/8 inch or 1/4 inch ... or just pay attention to color & syrup texture ? What’s a good general rule of thumb? And after you reach a good point of boiling down a pan of sap do you then transfer to a holding vessel & then add a new batch of sap to repeat process ? Or do you just keep adding more sap when 1st batch is reduced to syrup consistency? Please advise ... no one ever makes this clear
How often do you need to remove ash? Do you use a small shovel that fits through the opening to do that?
It has been fun to watch your journey. You take on these tasks with reckless abandon and as the seasons turn you find your groove and still don't quit taking on more fun adventures. Have you noticed a drop or increase in sap extracted from the trees that now have better drainage? Kind of off topic but was thinking about how it may affect your taps if you did not have the spring melt run off issues. I am not sure if the water above the surface helps a heavy flow or if dry warm soil may help increase the sap flow. Don't know why I am curious about that, but find myself needlessly wondering if you gain by the spring backwater or loose in draining it away? Strange how our minds work isn't it? I have a hell of a lot of things here on my own homestead to be wondering about but find myself wondering if your homestead sap flow is hindered or aided by melt off water drained or not drained. Hilarious when you think about it.
Lol, I wonder the same kind of things. I am not sure if it helps or hinders at this point but I do believe the cold water and ice around the trees does slow down the sap run
@@SSLFamilyDad Ah, that is good to know, and I bet it also leads to early rot at the base as well. Well now I feel a bit relieved! LOL!
you'll boil better if you clean the soot off your pan. ....but you cemented it in. whoops. still boils but not as good as new. worth doing every boil or two.
SSL Family Ad
Would you rather write a check out to him to see the video?
@@damanifesto I spoke out of line. If I did not like watching 4 ads for a 17 min video I did not have to.
@@joshuabailey8212 The ads are annoying to be sure, but if they help the channel make money I'm good with it.
website says sold out. when do you think you will be ready with more?
We are working on some shipping processes and then I will have the first batch available.
Spraying water in the the fire in a good way to crack the block
Somebody buy this man a funnel! BTW, do you sell your maple syrup? I'd like to buy a quart if you're shipping.
Yes, soon!
Do you have directions on how to make that evaporator or a resource?
ruclips.net/video/gei72A-Xiuc/видео.html
His how to video :)
Oh and this one too.
ruclips.net/video/BF2m1-u2Fts/видео.html
Just go back to a few of his recent videos and he shows how he made that evaporator . He already had the pan .
Henry Rodgers thanks
Save some steps. Carry 2 buckets.
I was afraid the extra weight would put me through the ice! Lol
Can I buy a jar.
How do you cover that at night?
Just a tarp
Thank you. =0)
First!!
Err, second
pallets are treated with toxic chemicals 😱
Whatever happened to this guy?😄
You wasted time and materials and energy and money. You could have made the entire oven with concrete cement board and pearlite and a few incidentals. Make the inner wall with cement board and the outer wall with cement board. Fill the void with pearlite for insulation. Attach the inner wall and the outer wall with screwed spacers.
It doesn't make a tinker's damn if it lasts or not. The cost of replacing the inner wall is tiny compared to the energy you will save. Do that next year if necessary. Amuse yourself with a door if you like.
I love what you are doing. Save materials, save time, save effort, save money.
@Cheap Skate I see you don't see a problem. In fact, you don't see several problems.
