Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" you are the best I will definitely keep this in mind next time I go to the Beach, but one question will this work with other fibers?
Cindafella I meant that he should showcase his skills on a deserted island, like a mini vlog thing which is entirely different from what he does in his channel but why not give it a try? he could become the descendent of the grylls XD
So just survive on an island as long as possible with a bunch of batteries and a camera, but have a way to signal for help? We wouldn't want the king of random to die.
The coconut husk also makes great kindling, the shell can be used as a bowl or cup, and the liquid inside restores electrolytes... That's why coconuts are known as the "tree of life"
This is how fiber is spun! You can make a stronger rope by spinning a long yarn using a huge batch of husks. The grafts won't be quite as strong as a single long yarn. And then continue in the manner you described, plying two long yarns together.
All of your videos are so awesome, whenever I get the notification (even if I'm another video) I come straight to watch it. I love you work, so keep it up.
After seeing this, I made a rope approx' 1.5 meter long. T'was much stronger than I anticipated! I want to thank him for for teaching us such a useful skil. Rest in peace..
Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" you should do some videos on primitive technology that would be great.... been subscribed since the beginning love your videos
@Jeebus Dominguez: there is a youtube channel exactly called "primitve technology" where he does exactly that. he builds huts and stoneaxes and stuff from scratch. And by sccratch i literally mean from stick and stones!
took some serous work to make it, but i made one about 2 1/2 feet long and i put my 5 year old brother on it and he is about 40 pounds (i think) and it held him up and that was only with one double twist
I am in Hawaii at the moment but i live in Portland Oregon, it is a family vacation. You are the first major youtuber that has ever responded to one of my comments too :P you made my day even better
Hey Grant Thompson! I just wanted to say thank you! You entertain your Community with every single video! And what you are entertaining with isn't just to upload any videos and get more subscribers, no, it's very interesting and seems to be very much and hard work. So, greeting and much thanks from Germany, my friend! :D P.S.: Could you please make a video about making a tesla coil? Would be nice! Thanks and Bye Bye! ;)
Hey, Grant! Would this work using a drop spindle, or are the fibers too coarse? A drop spindle is super easy to make with 1/4" dowel rod and a 2" wooden wheel from Hobby Lobby.
I agree.. I've always wanted to live primitively and use my wits to survive. It's definitely not strange.. but i find it satisfying to be out in nature, living minute to minute and thinking about my next task at hand than to sit around at a desk all day.
That's actually really practical! Say you need to climb a tree with a bunch of branches, but you can't reach the first one, however you can get your piece of rope over it and hold onto the other side. Do that near the trunk and use the extra support to walk up it, and you're in the tree! I'm just spewing ideas ignore me ;w;
where is this video taken place because the beach looks mighty fine and the water is very clear. I might think about going there for a vacation trip one day
3 strand is the most stable. 2 strand as you made is ok but can get uneven under load and isn't as strong(strands spiral more), 4 strand requires a core to wrap around but is stronger and less springy(strands spiral less).
MoistGoat actually most of its actually quite simple just get a branch about 11/2 inches thick to 2 inches (to ensure structural strength) i would guess use his rope making method or if you have any thin string (i used nylon string for my bow very strong) and then the only problem i would have is making the arrorws but you could probably do that with very thin branches with a shard of rock secured on it with said rope...as for the fletching you could probably use a small leaf or leaves or use the strands from the coconut as for adequate aerodynamics if you cant find any birds to use their feathers
It's called a two strand twist and I use it to style my hair. you twist the two strands clockwise then wrap them around each other counter-clockwise. They can't unwind because they have tension in two rotations. They use that method for rug tassles too.If you were to sit and brace the center with your foot or your toe, you could use both hands to twist and use your arm motion to wrap at the same time.
Thanks for the information. In India, coconuts and coconuts trees are used to make varieties of products. One of them is called coir rope. Other uses are coir board, fillers in sofa and bed.
Giannis Pantazis I don't think you can use this as a bow string, because once you get it strong enough for a decent bow string, it will probably be too thick.

sounds like something that deserves to be on youtube red.
This is one of the cooler things he has done

That is really cool. How much coconut husk did you use to make that length of rope? Was that all from only one nut or did you use multiple husks.
+739redrose Good question. It was from 3 husks. But I didn't use all the fibers in all the husks either. Just the stuff that was easier to get out.

Legitimate question: about how many coconuts worth of fiber did you need for the final product of 1-1.5 ft of rope?
Seth Yuikora 69
72,3 at least :D
Seth Yuikora Try it yourself
one maybe two
You expect me to say no? Haha

you could use those ropes to bind logs together and make a raft to escape the island unless Gilligan messes it up

How many times would I have to twist the rope until it is strong enough to use as a bowstring?
Giannis Pantazis I don't think you can use this as a bow string, because once you get it strong enough for a decent bow string, it will probably be too thick.
well depends on what you are attaching the string to, because most of the elasticity comes from the bow itself! I would assume maybe 2x would be all
Giannis Pantazis Bow strings need some elasticity to it
RoxasWasTaken Actually, elasticity in your bow string is the last thing you want. The spring comes from the stiff limbs of the bow itself.
David Kenny If bow strings have no elasticity to it, then how would you pull it back, and how would it snap back to its starting position?
