They could have, but the Dutch lowered their tempo after two goals were scored. We scored the two goals quicker than the Germans did a few days before, so it possibly could have been 0-10. But we kept a little respect for the host nation.
@@arthurlecomte8950 Germany kept some respect aswell. Müller told the boys during half to time to try and get to 10 goals. Loew however insisted on just taking the win and not humiliating Brazil. Notice how during the second half Both sides just stopped trying and Gotze who came fresh off the bench was the only one actually trying to achieve anything. That one Brazilian goal was given out of respect aswell.

I find it scary, almost disturbing how each time Holland score in this match, you hear nothing but a faint collective shriek from the Brazilian crowd, as they watch their chances of even a medal evaporate. Even in the semi-final where Germany thrashed Brazil, you could still hear cheering from the stands (most likely from the German fans) each time they scored a goal.

That 2nd goal by Daley Blind is my favourite of the match. No one marked him and the fact that David Luiz cleared the ball with just a header is really abysmal. Props to Daley Blind for only using three touches to score the goal.

In the nineties there were two thrilling matches. The best match of the entire world cup 1994 was Brasil against Holland (3-2) with offside goal Brasil, a beautiful goal of Bergkamp and a magnificient 3-2 free kick Brasil. In 1998 it was 1-1 and Brasil beated Holland after extra time and penalties. In 1974 Holland beated Brasil 2-0 with goals of Cruijff and Neeskens. I mean I do see your point. Winning the third place match gives you a sense of accomplishment while becoming runners up is an outcome of losing in the finals. However then again, as runners up you reached the finals, played it and claimed silver medal so position wise I think runners up is better.

If a player fouls an opposing player who is judged to be in a clear goal scoring position then the player who committed the foul is shown a straight red and is dismissed from the game. It's one of the rules of football.
