Just an update: I do not think the filter matrix setting was used with distortion besides on MV. Most of that matrix sound on In Utero comes from room mics.
@@GraysonMakesGames no, speakers do not create that sound, but it's great that Aaron is out there misinforming people. it's from multiple mics in the room creating an "out of phase" sound
I love that pedal and your video is a nice demonstration of it. I actually have a track were I’m using the exact same drunken setting. Love your video and looking forward to the next.
Oh my gosh! Thanks a lot for breaking it down. I totally understand it now! I was hearing other people talking about this "Filter Matrix" used on In Utero and I was like "what the hell is that? that sounds really complicated" and it's just a mode on the pedal. You totally got it man! Congratulations!
Hi, I just wanted to say that I think this is your best and most informative video. For 30 years we've been talking about the EchoFlanger/PolyChorus settings and how Kurt used those pedals. We had the diagram showing his settings, but that never mentioned the Filter Matrix or talked about what order the pedals were in or addressed the Blend switch. Great job being thorough!
Awesome video! Convinced me to pick up the original Polyflange unit you sent the link to :D whether you have the original or reissue versions of these, I think they’re very neat pedals and offer a lot in one package. I love the weirder sounds they make.
If I’m not mistaken on the actual album he used a 70s echoclanger but it broke and on the in utero tour he used a 90s re-issue polychorus which is essentially almost identical to the echoflanger.
The echoflanger was used on in utero and did break down, but it was repaired and Earnie Bailey gave Kurt his polychorus for backup. It was not a 90s reissue, as those were the "Stereo Polychorus" and sounded much different. I used to own a 90s polychorus, it sounds like an entirely different pedal. The Polychorus also was discontinued in 1983, and the reissues came out in 1996.
Man I’m looking to get that “broken record” sound you did with the polychorus out of my Earthquaker Devices SeaMachine (V3), I can do RFUS with it but I just can’t get that sound that you did with it.
You just need a chorus with a dry/wet control. Blend off on the Polychorus is just the wet signal, when it’s on the dry and wet are balanced about 50/50.
Hey jq! Love the videos as always. Just wondering if you’ve ever considered having a decibel meter running in the background of your videos? as I live in a house with neighbours all around me and I’m curious as to how possible it is to get these tones out of stage sized rigs while keeping the volume low enough to not piss my neighbours off. I know attenuation exists but yeah just wondering how you personally go about it. Thanks mate :)
This reminds me an awful lot of my Moog MF Chorus. It can't do quite as nasty comb effects, but it absolutely does the sort of sounds like on "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" and "Scentless Apprentice". It's generally a fairly insane pedal.
Nice JQ. what pick ups do you have in your hi flier? i think Kurts was a Seymour Duncan JBJ in the bridge right? are the new ones the same at the vintage ones? and whats in the neck again?
For scentless at the beginning were you using the poly chorus before or after distortion? Cause for me when I use my delay before distortion it sounds IDENTICAL to Kurts scentless tone and when I use it after distortion it sounds like his live tone
If you do another video can you watch your voice over levels in the mix of the video so we don't have to crank the volume to hear what you're saying and then have our ears blown when you play the guitar??
Hi jq! for what do you have mesa boogie head if you sold mesa pre and what was wrong with the previous preamp that you sold by the way why theoretically you bought the same amplifier again? Thanks for your time.

yeah i think that comes from the utah speakers in kurt's quad

Pretty cool how Kurt was able to make these really dissonant sounds work in the context of the music.
that portion you played where you described it as a broken record sounded beautiful
I need that tone so much bro

Cool man, I'd be interested in hearing that! Thanks for watching!
ive always wanted a poly chorus, good demo video!!!!

How do you only have 6k subs? You deserve more recognition

0:22 THAT TONE! It sounds so accurate to the recording!
Oh and can not forget that both scentless apprentice and heart-shaped box solos are very amazing!
What speakers are in your Fender Quadreverb?
Very good! a pity that PolyChorus is so difficult and expensive 👏🤘

just use a vibrato pedal. behringer makes one for $30
Sound perfect 🎸👍

3:09 sounds like gallons tone
Is it ok when the overload light is on? I have 2000's reissue and my light is always on when the distortion is engaged.
super excited man :)
Very informative

JB in bridge, 59N in neck just like Kurt's. The new ones are pretty much identical to the vintage ones.
@@jq.guitars GREAT THANK YOU. :)
Where’s the pedal x videoooo
I've been busy, but I still intend on making it once I have time!
Awesome video! Amazing Polychorus! Can you please tell me: what are the settings on the Big Muff for Nirvana?
I have a boss katana so you have to adjust the settings by 1-100 but on ur amps it's 1-10. Do you know how to input ur settings into my boss?
For scentless at the beginning were you using the poly chorus before or after distortion? Cause for me when I use my delay before distortion it sounds IDENTICAL to Kurts scentless tone and when I use it after distortion it sounds like his live tone
After, I haven't tried before yet. I'll try it and see how it sounds

Will do, sorry about that.
hey! can you make a tone 09/01/91 - Rotterdam, 3 weeks after the release of neverminde? :D
Hell yeah man! Keep grunge alive 🔥
Always wondered how to get that sound on Pennyroyal Tea and Rape Me. Had no idea the Polychorus was on with the neck pickup!
Rape Me is bridge pickup and Pennyroyal is neck
I gotta get me one of those man 😩
Hi jq!

Thanks for your time.
I sold the mesa pre because my mesa 50 cal head was cheaper and sounds exactly the same
Holy shit - how did you get a hold of a Pedal X?
What if you’re gonna use polychorus without distortion? Will it still sound the same??? Nice video btw 🎉
I think I need one now lmao
what did you pay for it?
3:08 every emo/skramz song in intro
nice man. but i have an question do you regrett selling youre gospel? cuz i sure would regrett that
I don't regret it, it was one of the worst playing guitars I've had.
Ah ok , Studio was POLY INTO DISTORTION , then live it was opposite? 👍😎🤘
Rad
this is wild. that Aaron guy was trying to copy Nirvana and now this kid is trying to copy Aaron copying Nirvana.
@ab8817 My channel came first, but sure bud.
Is there a pedal that can sound like the filter matrix?
